To think bangers and mash implies veg too?

My kids love sausage and mash. I always do it with at least one type of veg, preferably two. Peas, carrots, broccoli sort of thing.

We stayed with PIL a while ago and MIL did sausage and mash that was exactly that - sausage, mash, gravy. Then recently my DM did the same.

It won't do DC any harm but I thought it was odd. I don't think I'd ever give DC just meat + potato for dinner unless it was a desperate situation. AIBU to think it's weird to have a dinner with no veg?

Potatoes are extremely nutritious. They get bad press.

They were omitted from the five a day because people are plenty of them already and it was felt silly to encourage more, especially if it was going to be in chip/wedge form.

But boiled/baked they are very good for you.

Marmite27 · 12/07/2021 17:18

At the very minimum broccoli here.

Usually with peas and carrots. We don’t have meals without vegetables, even pizza comes with a salad!

maddiemookins16mum · 12/07/2021 17:20

I normally serve veg but I’ve been in pubs when it was served with none (albeit it had onion gravy).

TheGoogleMum · 12/07/2021 17:22

I dont think its implied in the name, soYABU, but it's a good idea to include to make it a healthier dinner :)

Zwellers · 12/07/2021 17:24

Clues in the name. You don't have to includevegetables with everything. I wouldn't expect vegetables with my fish and chips or chicken curry and rice either.

pilingup · 12/07/2021 17:31

I never cook that type of meal without three components - meat, carb, veg. YANBU

KirstenBlest · 12/07/2021 17:40

Fish&Chips is fish and chips.
Egg, Chips and Beans is just that.
Pie & chips - pie and chips

Bangers & mash - just that.

It is up to you if you add something to it.

Rubyupbeat · 12/07/2021 17:42

It's a personal thing, we have vegetarian sausages, mash, always tinned tomatoes and fried onions.
Actually had this yesterday.

I came here for wisdom. And here it is. 😆

Isababybel · 12/07/2021 17:48

I would always do vegetables, i dont have veg as snacks or with my lunch so would feel extremely unhealthy to omit them from my dinner. Broccoli, green beans and carrots always on the side of sausages and mash! And lots of gravy.

@BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand

I bow to your food superiority!

Surely it's just normal eating? When I eat at my friends/families houses they also serve veg in every meal. I don't know anyone who would serve just meat + staple carb with no veg.

So you and your friends never eat a meat curry with rice and maybe a bread? No veg there and lots of people do have that as a meal
PattyPan · 12/07/2021 17:54

Haha it’s funny to see two people mention curry because I went downstairs to think about what to make for dinner a minute ago. I was looking through the cupboard and thinking about making a curry with chickpeas (and cauliflower, onion, probably a pepper and spinach/maybe baby aubergines) and thought to myself what a sad meal it would be if it was just chickpeas, rice and sauce Blush

anothernamereally · 12/07/2021 17:58

Always with veg ditto fish and chips even if it's just peas or beans, I'd let it go at grandparents though but I'd find it really odd not to have any veg with dinner

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 12/07/2021 18:00

I'm pescetarian and only really eat veg curries these days, but even when I ate meat I always put veg in the sauce. Onions, tomatoes, peppers, chickpeas, spinach etc. At a curry house, people usually share veg side dishes etc.

You must know that Indian cuisine is really vegetagle orientated, surely? Most Hindus are vegetarian.

LeonieSims · 12/07/2021 18:00

You can LOL as much as you want, but if you can't manage to make a healthy drink for your kids, it's a bit sad.

Mine only drinks water, milk, or tea. No squash, juice, or smoothies.

toast isn't a meal

It's breakfast for loads of people Confused

PaperMonster · 12/07/2021 18:16

We always had bangers and mash with no veg as a child. Always seemed weird to me to have veg with it - although now I always do veg. My preferred is mushy peas.

Poppop4 · 12/07/2021 18:17

I would always serve at least less with bangers and mash. Maybe carrots too but peas as a minimum but then again I serve frozen veg when I’m giving DC chicken nuggets and chips for tea which most my friends find a bit odd! Anything tj get some extra veg in DD

Poppop4 · 12/07/2021 18:17

At least peas* silly autocorrect

JellyfishandShells · 12/07/2021 18:18

Peas are the perfect side for bangers and mash.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 12/07/2021 18:43

Presumably the chicken curry would start off from a paste made with onions, chillis, spices and maybe garlic, so there's some veg. There might even be a tomato in it somewhere. Technically fruit, I guess.
ElephantOfRisk · 12/07/2021 18:44

I was brought up WC but in poverty during the late 60s and 70s. I was a picky eater but it was basically take it or leave it. I often left it! Grin

However, we ate soups and stews and meals that contained plenty of veg or beans to fill it all out. The meat part of the meal was pretty small so would be made up for with veg and potatoes. My elder brothers used to fish and also worked as trainee chefs so we actually ate a lot of things such as eel (and rabbit and game birds which they caught while out or swapped for fish), they'd also be given food that was no longer saleable (things like frogs legs!) and would make meals out of that. We also picked and ate wild fruit or rhubarb from the garden or a crumble made from old apples etc.

We ate a pretty healthy diet generally and rarely convenience foods. I think things changed when I was in my teens, people started to have actual freezers rater than a tiny icebox in their fridge and farmfoods became a thing and so did things like vesta curries etc.

Since most of the family cooked, we didn't have so much of that sort of stuff. Even when i was 11 or 12, i'd go home for lunch and make a pot of bolognese sauce or a curry to save mum or dad the bother

KatherineJaneway · 12/07/2021 18:52

and toast isn't a meal

I'd be a lot thinner if I hadn't eaten breakfast for over 40 years Grin

Spanielstail · 12/07/2021 18:54

I almost never have an evening meal that doesn't have veg. Usually multiple veggies. Really odd to make sausage and mash with no veg.
