I have no idea who this Joss person is, but they are wrong about kids loving tasteless toilet humour.
DS has always found that toilet humour turns his stomach. We could never read those picture books by the two boyband people about the shitting dinosaurs because they made him feel sick, and all the toilet based books that followed them by other authors. He used to like that fake documentary about the school, but the teacher who sneezed on everything turned his stomach.
At a younger age he would have hated Dildo Monkey even without the giant penis attached to the costume, but with it he would be mortified even now, if we had gone to the library and been confronted with that shit show in person.
God knows what Joss's kids have been exposed to if giant dildos on strange men aren't an issue, but not every child is the same.
Joss perhaps doesn't have the emotional empathy to understand that sometimes, people laugh because they are embarrassed or uncomfortable or scared and that sometimes a child can't articulate what is making them feel that way, especially if the grown-ups around them are laughing along as well.
