I hope England do win even although I'm not a football fan. I don't want to be a pessimist but I think the odds are against a win. We'll never hear the end of it.

That’s so disgusting. England fans take it too far, too often. Actually brings shame on the team.

I feel so sorry for the man at the end. People are trying to justify it in the comments by saying he had no ticketHmm, regardless nothing actually justifies several men kicking him in like that

FlyingBattie · 12/07/2021 00:23

Honestly, this could have been predicted.
Football is tribal at the best of times.
People who have been locked down for the best part of a year gathering in huge crowds and drinking heavily... on a background of a huge match in a sport renowned for poor behaviour (putting it mildly) of fans.

Geamhradh · 12/07/2021 00:28

@Billlius

I have seen a very chilling video on Twitter where Italian fans are being set upon and kicked by English thugs. Gave me the shivers.
Yes. The same is happening here in Italy but the other way round. I've just said on another thread I've had to block 3 work colleagues who are sending me disgusting messages, the police are out in force as the town is being looted and burned and on FB I've just reported a professional teachers' page which is posting death threats to Prince George.
MercyBooth · 12/07/2021 00:33

Bloody hell!!!

I hope you're reporting them to your employers?

Terhou · 12/07/2021 08:34

You also don’t see thugs destroying tourist areas in Central London before/after other key sporting matches

You have a point. Relatives who live near the stadium at Twickenham say that, although it can be a pain due to traffic problems etc, at least they don't get fans peeing in their front garden or indeed trashing the place.

Bryonyshcmyony · 12/07/2021 08:35

We get that during Glastonbury.

Steady flow of ticketless fans were still rushing into stands when the opener was scored. Aisles so full, stairs blocked and the disabled area in front of the press box is packed. Paying supporters pleading with helpless stewards to get them out. Kids scared, seats stolen. Unsafe

Isn't this pretty much how Hillsborough happened? I know we have more safety measures now but still shocked that people are so awful and Wembley weren't better prepared.
OhWhyNot · 12/07/2021 08:43

I’m dreading all the tactics talk that will part of every meeting this week as if the meetings don’t drag on enough

It’s sad we lost two minutes tops to discuss that then let’s move on

But no it will be a break down of the game, the goal, our 2 by 4 or 5 by 3 formation or whatever, then the defence, then the Italian goal, then the penalties and should we have given in that order blah blah blah

I need to book some annual leave

TiddyAndFletch · 12/07/2021 08:47

Isn't this pretty much how Hillsborough happened?

No - Hillsborough had nothing to do with ticketless fans. The stadium was unfit for purpose and crushes of fans legitimately entering built up at the turnstiles. The police then opened another gate (they later lied that this gate had been stormed) and failed to direct the fans as they entered, meaning that more and more fans went into a 'pen' that was already full.

Hillsborough was down to police failures, an out-of-date stadium, and the system of shutting fans into pens.

OhWhyNot · 12/07/2021 08:57

We have had years of enquiries to shift the blame from fans at Hillsborough

It was not down to fans at all.

It was awful to see what was relatively few people try to barge in thankfully they were not successful

No we do not get this at other sporting events but there isn’t other sporting events that have such a following nothing comes close, football is like religion and unfortunately there is a small number of people who create problems (and not just here in England) and out will come the racists who were no doubt happy to support England’s black players when they scored a goal

There is also a huge amount of snobbery around football, towards footballers and football supporters

Sorry, I didn't mean blaming the fans, but overcrowded entrance areas, people still trying to get in when an early goal was scored (or missed I think at Hillsborough) and inadequate policing/security for safety. All of which occurred last night plus some atrocious behaviour.
TiddyAndFletch · 12/07/2021 09:14

There are going to be potential safety issues with any large, excited crowd. In terms of stadium design, lessons were strongly learned from Hillsborough and state of the art Wembley in 2021 is a million miles away from the crumbling terraces, rusting turnstiles and animal-like pens of the 1980s.

TabbyStar · 12/07/2021 09:17

Over a decade since I have left home and I cannot watch football as I find it too stressful.

Same @juice92 - though over 30 years for me. I immediately tense the minute I hear it.

fairycakes1234 · 12/07/2021 10:22

What is it with the English fans? Always violence, destruction, sour grapes, seriously its no wonder they arent respected anywhere! Embarrassing.

It was partly due to overcrowding as a pp said and yes Wembley should have been better prepared, and as I said last week, you also wonder what people are managing to get through security. If it's that easy to get into Wembley, a terrorist will manage it one day.

People can still get stampeded by overcrowding. It reminds me of a case of a fire in a nightclub in the early 2000s when people were trampled.

Lack of structural safety may make it worse but ultimately trampling is down to chaos and overcrowding.

TiddyAndFletch · 12/07/2021 14:38

The chaos and overcrowding was down to the stadium design. The turnstile entrances were too small to cope with the number of supporters, hence the bottlenecks that led to the disastrous decision by the police to open one of the exit gates. Similar had happened before - a piece of evidence in the enquiry was a letter written by a supporter who'd been crushed at a big match the year before. Good crowd control can alleviate problems but ultimately overcrowding happens when the number of people is bigger than a venue can cope with.
