I hope England do win even although I'm not a football fan. I don't want to be a pessimist but I think the odds are against a win. We'll never hear the end of it.

I'm in Italy and if we (Italy) lose my kids are going to be sad about it but I honestly can't see them moping around for weeks! (And they are big football fans, all season ticket holders). If we win, dh wants to take them into the piazza to celebrate but this thread is making me nervous about that!

Parkermumma07 · 11/07/2021 09:47

I am a police officer working in a domestic abuse unit. Since the Euros started the amount of abuse being suffered and reported has sky rocketed. We have had to draft in extra staff tomorrow to cover what we already know will be a massive spike.
As others say win or loose there is an increase.

I enjoy football myself but am starting to dread the impact it has on society.

bumblingbovine49 · 11/07/2021 09:47

My parents were Italian and I have dual nationality so it is a win win and also a lose lose for me. I find Italy England international cup finals quite conflicting .

I already had the supermarket delivery man ask me how I felt about the match, given my surname ( in a very friendly way). I said we had a British surname and in Italian on in the house so it was win win for us Grin

Let's not blame "society". Or football. Let's blame men.

And alcohol.
Bryonyshcmyony · 11/07/2021 09:51

Or it's "bread and circuses" for us idiot proles

Exactly. It's working as my tiny brain is really looking forward to the match. If we lose I'll be disappointed but still super proud of what's been a great team.

Mn really does suck the joy out of life.

I read yesterday that if England do win they are going to donate their winners fee to the NHS of course there are no threads on here about that as the narrative is all competitive misery about how dreadful football is 🙄

Cloudninenine · 11/07/2021 10:02

@Bryonyshcmyony

It's not football, it's alcohol. Think about that when you drink your glass of prosecco as you are moaning about sport.
I manage to have a glass of Prosecco most weekends without beating the shit out of my husband.

There is a known link between football and domestic violence. Alcohol clearly plays a part, but equally clearly is not the whole story.

I don’t think sport should be banned - bit of a ridiculous notion. I like sport, albeit not football particularly. But I think the entire football industry has a moral duty to try and tackle the problem, and they don’t do enough.

There should be adverts before every match in which England players condemn the spike in domestic violence. There should be a zero tolerance policy to domestic violence perpetrated by professional players. There should be lifetime bans for any fan convicted of domestic abuse. There should be money publicly funnelled into domestic abuse charities and women’s shelters by professional teams / leagues. There should be a visible campaign about it.

When men stop taking women’s lives after their team loses and they’ve had a few drinks maybe we will stop “sucking the joy out of things”. It’s really sad you’re not having these real life conversations too. I’m glad my real life is vastly different to yours.

That is the fault of violent men not football and you know jack shit about my life

It's really sad that some on here are so smug and judgmental.
Bryonyshcmyony · 11/07/2021 10:09

No, there shouldn't be advertising. That would put the blame squarely on football when that's just not fair. Exactly the same thing happens during rugby, Christmss and NYE

Terhou · 11/07/2021 10:11

Although I want them to win for their own sake, there is a part of me that doesn't want it because I really can't face that idiot Johnson desperately trying to take the credit and make political capital out of it. To say nothing of the fools who claim it's some sort of validation of Brexit.

Yes I think a lot of people think that if anything good happens in this country it must be a Tory plot.
Or it's "bread and circuses" for us idiot proles“

ThursdayWeld

Apologies if that’s referring to my use of the phrase. I put it very badly. It’s not my opinion. I meant that I imagine that’s Johnson’s thinking.

I said on a previous thread, football isn’t my thing but I’m happy that other people are happy.

I’ll get my coat 🥴

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/07/2021 10:19

I should have left it to Terhou 😁

The only place I see Brexit and the government being dragged into everything is mumsnet, the irony
Washimal · 11/07/2021 10:49

I'm dreading the aftermath whichever way it goes as either will trigger a whole load of shitty, antisocial behaviour.
The media is partly at fault for encouraging and validating the emotional incontinence that happens around football.

This. It's not football I have a problem with, it's that people use it as an excuse to behave like animals.

Bryonyshcmyony · 11/07/2021 11:04

Yes. Being happy about ANYTHING on Mumsnet basically means you must love the Tory government and must have voted for Brexit.

And on Twitter. English fans are automatically nationalistic xenophobic Brexit thugs, but foreign fans are all good and pure and true.

It was in reference to what you said, so thanks for clarifying that @MrsSkylerWhite - no hard feelings Smile
RosesAndHellebores · 11/07/2021 11:46

I can help thinking it may be a very good night for Italy. They could win both the tennis championships and the football!

Yes! Tbh both England and Italy got hit so hard by Covid I can't begrudge Italy a win unless its dirty of course
MrsTrustice · 11/07/2021 11:50

I hate the ‘losing will cause domestic abuse to go up’.

No. Football isn’t causing domestic violence. Losing a football match isn’t causing domestic violence. It is MEN. Football is just a scapegoat, if it weren’t the football pissing a man off and causing him to beat his wife, it’d only be something else to trigger him next week.

We need to stop treating these men like children. Saying stuff like “it’s the football” is in a way making an excuse for them. I know that’s not the intention and that it’s to raise awareness, but putting it down to stuff like that does not helpz
