I hope England do win even although I'm not a football fan. I don't want to be a pessimist but I think the odds are against a win. We'll never hear the end of it.

The men who abuse around football tournaments aren’t suddenly becoming abusers because of the football match. They always were. It’s just that more of them are drinking at the same time and so kicking off at the same time hence the spike.

It’s not a football issue, it’s a men issue.

Bryonyshcmyony · 11/07/2021 11:52

I agree. Even the dv charities are at pains to say it isn't football per se.

It is hugely driven by alcohol and my comment about prosecco stands. Maybe people should stop drinking in solidarity to those women who are beaten up by drunk men?

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 11/07/2021 12:00

Plus all the poor women who will be the victims of the spike in domestic abuse that always occurs after England lose

I don't know the stats, but thats a thing in Glasgow too when Celtic and Rangers play, especially when its playing each other. So its not just English fans thats specific too. Its horrific.

I can't stand the nationalism and toxic masculinity associated with supporting men's football. I'm hoping for a lose.

So it's only English nationalism and toxic masculinity you don't like?

So it's OK Italian fans to be toxic nationalists, just not English, ok then

Lucky you! At least you'll be happy whoever wins.

I don't get the logic in beating someone up because your team loses. I really don't. I might be an Everton fan but I've never once hurt anyone when we lose.

beigebrownblue · 11/07/2021 12:28

At the moment I feel very sorry for the hospitality staff in pubs and restaurants. There are lots of young people working in such places over the summer.

Football plus drinking (and men) is a toxic mix - which means they are going to be more exposed to the risk of infection than they should be.

I have bad news for you about Italy.
Geamhradh · 11/07/2021 12:54

@Soubriquet

I can’t see anything good coming if they win or lose

Win:- drunken people destroying property over sheer joy. Screaming in the night and getting drunker. Probably antagonising Italians cos “they won and Italy lost”

Lose:- exact same behaviour

That's what's already happening to us Brits in Italy. Every match Italy has won, the fans have taken to the streets and vandalized property and vehicles.

I've had to block people on SM today and will be locked in the house. DD has gone to a friend's in another city where few people know she's half British.

Twats are everywhere sadly.

hahahayoumustbejoking · 11/07/2021 13:11

@SmallPrawnEnergy

*Mn really does suck the joy out of life.+ Ain't that the truth Thankfully mumsnet is not represensitive of real life

When men stop taking women’s lives after their team loses and they’ve had a few drinks maybe we will stop “sucking the joy out of things”. It’s really sad you’re not having these real life conversations too. I’m glad my real life is vastly different to yours.

That's a nasty comment to make. Have your view and express an opinion but there is no need for that.

You should apologise.

Good grief! What a bunch of miseries! What do people get out of pissing on people's chips? Hmm

nosafeguardingadults · 11/07/2021 14:35

There is a known link between football and domestic violence. Alcohol clearly plays a part, but equally clearly is not the whole story.

Am a victim. Bigger link is not enough safe places to live for all victims and not enough support to leave. Councils break the law when you approach them for help. Homeless applications and also with social services referrals. They do everything they can not to help. Humiliating and violating asking and even begging for help and being lied to or ignored or tricked by places meant to help. They lie to you and tell you the evidence you have including death threat messages isn't enough evidence. One place decided to close my case when I was desperate for help. The last time I'd spoken to her, I'd told her all I wanted was to finally be safe and settled and couldn't take much more of the constant fear. At that point I didn't want to wake up anymore. She was nice on the phone but told me to take 10 minutes to get myself together. I was crying. She never rang back as she said she would and didn't answer her phone. She ignored my messages for a week then messaged to say she was closing my case. You feel so helpless and beyond alone and also a bit dirty like you're not the right sort of victim, like places decide who they want to help and fight for, maybe just if they like the sound of your voice or not or whatever or if they can be bothered or whatever reason.

Don't care about the football. One day makes no difference. Maybe lots of women like me all at same time when big drinking event but only difference is all at same time for once. Everyday it's happenings to women. We need more help and more safe places to go or we can't leave and when we leave, we have to go back. You call places and they ask you why you're calling them and say to just leave or call police. You can't do that if nowhere safe to go. Sorry again for posting but I spent last week trying again cos have window of opportunity to leave and it's running out and it's upsetting when people think it's simple thing like football that's the problem when it's not the football.

Lockheart · 11/07/2021 15:52

Well it's ten to 4 on a Sunday afternoon, hours before the match, and so far football fans have managed to shut down and evacuate Kings Cross station, been climbing onto the roofs of in-service buses, and have been throwing bottles at people and buildings in Leicester Square.

Don't you just love it.

I can't wait to see what harmless fun and games they have planned for after. I'm sure my city won't look like an absolute dump tomorrow.

Bryonyshcmyony · 11/07/2021 18:09

🤣

igelkott2021 · 11/07/2021 19:20

@x2boys

I read yesterday that if England do win they are going to donate their winners fee to the NHS of course there are no threads on here about that as the narrative is all competitive misery about how dreadful football is 🙄
Maybe they should donate it to DV charities.

It's a nice gesture though and probably not one that will be reported overseas.

Sadly, this.

I grew up in a household where a football match meant a horrendously stressful and tense couple of hours and then days of hideous tempers and violence if the outcome wasn't good or footballers/refs made too many mistakes or one of us made a single sound during the game.

Over a decade since I have left home and I cannot watch football as I find it too stressful.

Have you read the abuse English children are getting over on social media? In my Italian town the police have closed off one area because the locals have already burned out a load of cars, and my half Italian half British daughter has gone out under strict instructions not to tell anyone she's half British tonight.
Xenophobia and hate really isn't just an Ingerlund thing.
