I hope England do win even although I'm not a football fan. I don't want to be a pessimist but I think the odds are against a win. We'll never hear the end of it.

@Bryonyshcmyony

It's not football, it's alcohol. Think about that when you drink your glass of prosecco as you are moaning about sport.
If middle class mothers were rampaging around central London in hordes, climbing lampposts and vandalising ambulances, you might have a point.
RuggerHug · 10/07/2021 21:42

@FanOnCurtainsClosed

I used to work for social services. The duty team for children were busiest around The World Cup. No other sporting event and not Christmas caused as much misery.

I've never felt the same about it since.

That is so bloody sad fansoncurtainsclosed. I don't doubt it at all, it's just so cruel and grim.

@User135644

Oh for goodness sake, they aren't going to lose. England are going to win.
Where'd you get that crystal ball? I'd love one.
Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 21:43

@Demelza82

I'll be thrilled if they lose, people have lost their heads
It's coming home!
Pottedpalm · 10/07/2021 21:48

There will be a new song .. 55 years of hurt..

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 21:50

Lockheart
It is alcohol that causes the violence. But we are all happy to drink whenever we feel like it.

Justanotherlurker · 10/07/2021 21:51

Currently in Italy and the feeling is mutal, the Italian press will be brutal for years if they lose, just the same as if they win.

I suspect you won't like the swagger of the Italian narrative/press if it mirrored onto the english side either, win or lose, it's football and you obviously don't get it but whoever wins/loses it will be an added 'rivaly', it isn't based on xenophobia or suchlike it is nationalist team sport.

I would suggest looking up the meme video of italians saying if we do win then they will welcome english fans trashing 'Italian' restaurants of a certain kind, many of which are considered 'cultured' on MN.

There is many many videos on Insta, tik tok etc of Italian fans doing the same as englad fans after Italy result over spain, still trying to push a narative of it being an english problem shows lack of understanding. Reducing it to be I hope a minority of fans don't kick off so I hope my nation doesn't win has a wider problem that you need to deal with.

Cryalot2 · 10/07/2021 21:54

I hope they win, but dread the behaviour either way.
I don't intend to watch it but no doubt will not be able to escape it with both adult kids very into it.

It's not alcohol, it's violent men.
LadyCatStark · 10/07/2021 21:58

It’s awful that domestic violence increases around football matches, surely it’s more important to address that than whether or not “it’s coming home” which is a shit response to any argument anyway.

thinkningaboutit · 10/07/2021 22:00

Are adverts run at half time for domestic abuse charities? Not that it would deter many abusers I'm sure but surely should be addressed and maybe give support to some victims.

Justanotherlurker · 10/07/2021 22:07

It's not alcohol, it's violent men.

No need to bring IDPOL into this, it's alcohol there is many videos online of women joining in on win/lose behaviour OP worries about.

I can add an anecodatal of some of my freinds who work for CS and die hard anti tory being held in a cell over night on European away games. It's a maddness of crowds situation rather than being a specific IDPOL narrative.

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 22:10

If it's down to violent men then it isn't caused by football either (as.domestic violence charities say). It's violent men triggered by alcohol - more dv when games are earlier in the day as men have longer to drink

No. Alcohol just lets it out. But the footie fans are here to excuse their mob's revolting "celebrations"/"commiserations"/racism/DV/hooliganism ofc. Nothing is EVER their fault.
entropynow · 10/07/2021 22:20

@LadyCatStark

Quite.

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 22:21

Even domestic violence charities say the rise in violence has nothing to do with football per se

RuggerHug · 10/07/2021 22:22

That's something that should happen but unfortunately it'll probably be contractually only for the sponsors.

I had to google that to see wtf you're meaning - identity politics? If the rates of domestic abuse go up then of course that is about men. Do you think the domestic abuse charities are discussing the rates of female to male violence? Football, alcohol - they are triggers to violence. But they aren't the cause of the violence.
WingingItSince1973 · 10/07/2021 22:26

Everywhere is booked out around here. My dd and her friends have a place booked at the local football club. Most of her friends are starting at lunchtime! I'm looking after her ds my dgs so she won't be out until much later. She's been to all the showings when England play and she said it'd absolutely mad. I do worry about the alcohol consumption all day until early hours. The hospitals will no doubt get the fallout too.

UneFoisAuChalet · 10/07/2021 22:31

@Cloudninenine

Plus all the poor women who will be the victims of the spike in domestic abuse that always occurs after England lose Sad
This.

I swear I began to hate football after my police officer friend told me how he hated England matches because of the domestic violence and drunk incidents.

Middle class Mums on Prosecco seem to be able to handle themselves a lot better than football fans on Stella though, you’ve got to admit.

Exactly! The disingenuity is strong in some.

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 22:47

Yes, like the majority of football fans!
