AIBU to be dreading the misery if they lose

I hope England do win even although I'm not a football fan. I don't want to be a pessimist but I think the odds are against a win. We'll never hear the end of it.

OP posts:
newnortherner111 · 10/07/2021 22:49

Not dreading any long faces, but hope there is not an increase in DV and if there is, every single perpetrator faces justice.

Loopylobes · 10/07/2021 23:02

I'm dreading the aftermath whichever way it goes as either will trigger a whole load of shitty, antisocial behaviour.

The media is partly at fault for encouraging and validating the emotional incontinence that happens around football.

Can't wait for the whole thing to be done and dusted TBH.

Ratalie · 10/07/2021 23:17

So obviously DV is absolutely unacceptable (to put it lightly) but the increase around football games isn't as great as the increase on Christmas Day or, the worst day of the year, NYE.

Alcohol being the common denominator, of course.

Bryonyshcmyony · 10/07/2021 23:17

Or during lockdown.

PhilSwagielka · 10/07/2021 23:23

@Justanotherlurker

It's not alcohol, it's violent men.

No need to bring IDPOL into this, it's alcohol there is many videos online of women joining in on win/lose behaviour OP worries about.

I can add an anecodatal of some of my freinds who work for CS and die hard anti tory being held in a cell over night on European away games. It's a maddness of crowds situation rather than being a specific IDPOL narrative.

What do you mean, IDPOL? Most of the DV stats about England are about men beating women up. If you have any stats about women beating men up after football matches, I'd be interested to compare. Also, this is Mumsnet, it's kind of a given that there are going to be feminists on here.
FrankButchersDickieBow · 10/07/2021 23:25

@Bairnsmum05

If they win we will never hear the end of it either.
Exactly this! It's going to be unbearable either way.
Ratalie · 10/07/2021 23:27

www.google.com/amp/s/www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/police-highlight-rise-domestic-abuse-1932894.amp

A much smaller sample size than the football study, but almost an 80% increase during the Six Nations (rugby).

Alcohol being a factor in 80% of DV incidents throughout the year.

Men are a big part of tbe problem. Alcohol is a big part of the problem. I think everything else is, at best, secondary.

Doesn't matter about the football. It's just one day. If people care about domestic violence, needs to be more help to leave. Not enough safe places to go permanently so you have to go back. Councils ignore homeless applications and break the law and not always support to fight them. You ask places for help and tell them violating and humiliating detail and they don't care. They tell you to just leave or call police but you can't leave with nowhere safe to live. You ask councils for help, give them refuge worker evidence but they say not enough evidence. They tell you to apply to a different council, they tell you they'll help but then change their minds and lie and say they never said they'd help, they tell you not to apply if area the violence happened but if you try a different council, they tell you they need proof you can't stay in current area but then say evidence you give them isn't enough. They lie and break law in not helping but they get away with it cos what can you do it victim of violence. You get left with nowhere safe to go. They leave you waiting to be attacked again and dealing with psychological abuse and control. Trying to get safe place to leave and not getting it and not enough help million times worse than one day of violence.

Soubriquet · 11/07/2021 05:58

I can’t see anything good coming if they win or lose

Win:- drunken people destroying property over sheer joy. Screaming in the night and getting drunker. Probably antagonising Italians cos “they won and Italy lost”

Lose:- exact same behaviour

Mintjulia · 11/07/2021 06:07

When we lost to Germany in 98 (?) our entire sales team was hit by depression. It was ridiculous. They all flopped around for weeks looking like their dogs had died. It was pathetic.

We have an Argentinian in our office. At least they won last night so at least someone will be happy.

MrsDThomas · 11/07/2021 07:27

Im a big football fan, and either way the world will be hearing about it for the next 55 years.

Absolutely spot on.

@Marmite27

Tbh I don’t think people mind going out in the final as much as they do in the earlier rounds.
They won the semi final and men were abusing Danish children. I’m not optimistic these men will take losing a final well.

I loved supporting England as a kid, even through the heartbreaks of 96, 98, 00, 02.

Then Brexit happened and you saw the vitriolic anger that was built up inside these men. An anger that they can’t control, that they will take out at anytime, even when they’ve just won a fucking semi final.

I’m sure hooliganism was worse “back in the day” but this is the 21st Century and in a pandemic. Spitting and shouting vile abuse is just pathetic.

A large proportion of England fans are scum.

Forza Italia.

@Cloudninenine

Plus all the poor women who will be the victims of the spike in domestic abuse that always occurs after England lose Sad
And sadly even if they win. Some men don't need an excuse, they just get drunk and then think it's funny to beat up weaker members of their family. Arseholes.

I think it's going to be a nightmare either way - misery if we lose and we'll never hear the end of it if they win.

flinginflangin · 11/07/2021 09:34

I thought I was alone in this, I'm relieved there's a thread about it.
I am pleasantly surprised how well England have done and of course a victory would be lovely, but I'm sick of all the chants, songs, the social media posts and everything being about this one match tonight. Some people are acting like we've already won. Win or lose, I just can't wait until it's all over to be honest.

Nitgel · 11/07/2021 09:37

Mn really does suck the joy out of life.

After any international team loses. The same will happen in Italy, where they have an even greater violence against women problem.

I won't be miserable if we lose, disappointed, but still very very proud.

The worst is in NZ after the rugby

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/07/2021 09:43

No interest either, any of us. Said to DH last night though “I really hope they win, people might be nicer to each other for a couple of weeks”

Johnson will be desperate for a win too. Bread and circuses.

I'm not sure that that plays into the "Only English football fans are thugs" mentality properly, @Bryonyshcmyony.
Bryonyshcmyony · 11/07/2021 09:44

Yes I think a lot of people think that if anything good happens in this country it must be a Tory plot.
