For it was The Breakfast Club.

I was the perfect age for it when it came out, mid teens. OMG they GOT me! Their parents were arses too, they understood what it was like. Loved it my whole life.

Watched it again at 40 with teens and just thought "What a bunch of whining little shits" It is now my least favourite film of all time! It should have stayed in my memory as once you are the parent of the "misunderstood" teen you realise what an utter prat you were when you were 15!

@DrSbaitso

I never got on with DD. Baby? They called her Baby? I did pick up that it was intended to highlight her youth and inexperience, but still. Baby? A teenage girl, through puberty, on the cusp of womanhood? Baby? It just squicked me out even as a 14 year old. She was clearly older than I was, and everyone was calling her Baby?

Plus she was a very boring character, although Jennifer Gray played it well.

I won a pub quiz because of Dirty Dancing, I knew that the first woman in the American cabinet was called Frances (Perkins), I'd looked it up after watching the film and I have a dustbin memory for useless facts!
JudgeJ · 10/07/2021 12:50

@Quaggars

Yes! Ferris Bueller still great, watched recently and also introduced to 12 year old who loved it too so still passes for younger generation
Makes me almost weep when they trash those Ferraris though!

I can't rewatch Titanic, boring the first time round and unlikely to improve.

I never get the hype behind this film. Even the music was just alright. An average movie overall.

@whynotwhatknot

About last night is full of problems-man who wont commit because his bf is ribbing him about it and is a knob to women
I don't see it like that at all. Unrealistic expectations on both sides IMO. I don't think it was solely down to Bernie, Dan just had trouble settling down, and had no idea what living together would be like.

Not disagreeing that Bernie was a knob, mind. He couldn't compete with Dan on any level really.

Wheretobuy · 10/07/2021 12:53

Others on my list are From Dusk Till Dawn and The Pirates of The Caribbean

casualnamechange · 10/07/2021 12:56

@Wheretobuy oh my god from dusk till dawn is so campy and good! I love how the most implausible thing in the movie is that Quentin Tarantino and George clooney could ever be brothers 😆

For me it’s probably things like fight club, deathproof… all those very male films I used to love. In my mind they’re great movies and I would probably still enjoy them but I’m not sure in the same way as I did.

Films I could watch 100000 times (and have) are the big lebowski and call me by your name.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/07/2021 13:20

Anybody thinking of googling The Human Centipede like I just did, seriously, don't. Ugh

As this is a thread about re-watching films (or not)

First time I watched it , I was praying for the Mad Doctor to kill the dark haired girl NOW her screaming got right on my nerves .

Watched it again (till the finish) and it was sad at the end

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 10/07/2021 13:27

Wolf Creek. Scared the shite out of me first time round. Never again!

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2021 13:29

I walked out of the cinema when we went to watch Wall Street. Never returned the film. Yawn.

HBGKC · 10/07/2021 13:32

"I watched a Celebrity Gogglebox last night and they watched the scene in Back to the Future where Biff is about to 'have his way' with Marty's mum and everyone said (very rightly so) that that hasn't raised an eyebrow 30 years ago, but was v uncomfortable watching now."

Yup. My siblings and I loved this film (and the sequels) growing up, but this scene is the reason I now cannot let my kids watch this film. Such a shame!

Wolf of Wall Street? Great film!!
Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2021 13:40

It had Michael Douglas in. 1987, just called Wall Street?

Pinuporc · 10/07/2021 13:42

iI was going to say Dirty Dancing.
I still love the film (and the abortion storyline went straight over my head when younger!) thought she was just sick
Totally on Baby's Dad's side now as an adult, I mean she was just turning 16, and he was tons older and sleeping about.
Why does getting old suck the joy out of everything
Yep I was thinking exactly this!

@isthismylifenow

I loved the outsiders and I'm sure I would have tried to persuade my teen DD to watch if I'd seen it was on. Now I feel a bit disappointed. 🤣

Twelvetimestwo · 10/07/2021 13:44

Ohhhh yeah sounds shit
Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2021 13:47

It was @Twelvetimestwo but TBF as a fan of St Elmos/Pretty in Pink not sure what I was thinking even going to see it. Confused Grin

Wheretobuy · 10/07/2021 13:49

The Wolf of Wall Street. Testosterone poisoning Grin

sloanerangerpandora · 10/07/2021 14:08

requiem for a dream,the most depressing film I have ever watched.

God yes. Once and never ever again
Pinkandpink · 10/07/2021 14:11

Candyman, was very good in it’s day but it’s awful now

Oh god. That played on my mind for years after I watched it.

There's a new version just been released

Not that I will be watching it. I find the modern violence and special effects a bit too realistic.

Pinkandpink · 10/07/2021 16:16

SpacePotato
Thanks for that, I might look out for that

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 10/07/2021 16:37

I won't hear a word against John Hughes! His films are pure nostalgia and I love them to this day. I also used to teach a film course and was quite surprised by how many of today's generation of students loved them. Steff, Duckie and Blane are all great characters (although Blane does sound like a major appliance, not a name ...).

I completely agree about Grease. It's horribly, revoltingly, nauseatingly misogynistic, but TBF I can't say I ever really liked it in the first place.

The Broken Circle Breakdown is one of the most beautifully-made films I've seen in a decade, but although I still listen to the soundtrack I can't rewatch it. All the most painful issues humans can't bear to face and would normally rather hide from are in it, and the non-linear plot structure makes the horrors relentless. No sooner have we indulged in a formerly beautiful memory with the couple, making us think we'd do anything to have the same kind of apparently blissful relationship they do, we're assaulted with another relentless circle of anguish. It made for really harrowing viewing, wonderful though it was.

I'm a dedicated fan of Veerle Baetens now, though. She's every bit as amazing a singer as she is an actress.

Anything 'Working Title' have ever made is unmitigated shit, IMO. You couldn't pay me to watch a single one of those movies ever again. At a push I'd say the Christmas one was the worst, but Notting Hill is also near the top of their (long) shit list. Ugh.

Otherpeoplesteens · 10/07/2021 20:27

I thought Titanic was pointless the first time. I mean, we all knew the ship would sink...

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2021 20:30

Notting Hill seems to be on a permanent loop on some channel or other when I'm flicking. It really is an awful watch. Spent the whole time shouting 'as if!' at the screen.

John Hughes films are the best and yes, it was my childhood too. Grin
