For it was The Breakfast Club.

I was the perfect age for it when it came out, mid teens. OMG they GOT me! Their parents were arses too, they understood what it was like. Loved it my whole life.

Watched it again at 40 with teens and just thought "What a bunch of whining little shits" It is now my least favourite film of all time! It should have stayed in my memory as once you are the parent of the "misunderstood" teen you realise what an utter prat you were when you were 15!

Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club are 2 of my favourite films!

PiP....i never got why Andie went for Blaine, when Duckie was so funny and quirky and adored her. Blaine was a total slimeball, who cared only what his rich friends thought. My favourite scene was Duckie miming along to Try a Little Tenderness in the record shop.....classic Duckie.

TBC had some brilliant one liners, mostly from John. "Does Barry Manilow know you've raided his wardrobe?" And (accompanied by crude finger gesture) "Did you hear that? Or shall I turn it up? "

The star of PIP was the character Andie worked with in the record store-Iona was it?

It's well documented that the ending was Andie and Duckie being together but at the test audience showing people got up and booed the end. Confused So they changed it and she went with drippy terrible face grabby kisser Blaine.

I was always a bit Hmm that they made one terrible prom dress out of two pretty decent ones though.

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2021 10:09

Duckie was an excellent kisser by all accounts Iona said-

“I know I'm old enough to be his mother, but when the Duck laid that kiss on me last night, I swear my thighs just went up in flames! He must practice on melons or something.”

I think it's fun to watch the same films at different stages of life. I first saw Titanic as a teenager and couldn't understand how Rose could fall in love with someone she only just met. 10 years after first viewing and stuck in a miserable life situation, I cried buckets at the very idea of finding a soul mate who would rescue me at my lowest ebb. 10 years after that I think Rose was foolish to leave what at that time would have been her best chance of a secure future to run off with a vagrant she met two days previously on a ship. I wonder what I will think next time I watch it?

The Sixth Sense. Great film the first time only, for obvious reasons!

LeonardLikesThisPost · 10/07/2021 10:21

I watched The Breakfast Club for the first time as an adult (late 30s I think) and liked it a lot. But then, I tend to enjoy films with coming-of-age angles, and I have a lot of time for flawed teenage characters. I don't see them as whiny shits (many people also say this about Holden Caulfield, and I strongly disagree with that too. I find TCITR beautifully poignant and well-observed).

Have you seen the series Normal People? Teen angst (and beyond)/coming of age/flawed teenage characters all over the place. It was exhausting and frustrating.

@30degreesandmeltinghere

The human centipede.. Fucking grim.
I mean the OP is about films that watching the second time changed your original opinion.

So ... most people haven’t really got that. It’s not just making a film that’s “grim” (don’t know what else you would expect from that film) or naming a film you just didn’t like

@Sparklingbrook I was just coming on to write about last night! How could I have forgotten that film I was desperate to be Demi Moore at the time and had a massive crush on Rob Lowe!!

I wanted to be Debbie. She looked amazing at the end in those dungarees on a bike. Envy

Rob Lowe looks gorgeous throughout the film.

I can't think of anything in the story that we should be tutting at in 2021 can you?

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2021 10:42

Swoon.

Flawedperfection · 10/07/2021 11:07

The Passion of the Christ- could not sit through that again even if paid as it fucked with my mental health in a v distressing way.

Spidey66 · 10/07/2021 11:48

Molly Ringwald has said since she thinks Duckie was gay

That’s just guilt 😂 An excuse for going with the rich boy. Wink

Anybody thinking of googling The Human Centipede like I just did, seriously, don't. Ugh.

Yes never seen it and the premise isn’t for me. I’ll stick to the 80s teen angst I think!
lollipoprainbow · 10/07/2021 12:14

@Sparklingbrook I've got goosebumps! I can remember it word for word I even had the soundtrack on cassette tape!!

Lalliella · 10/07/2021 12:18
@sparklingbrook if you like Wayne's World, you'll like Bill and Ted as it's exactly the same sense of humour!
In fact when Wayne's World came out in the 90s and I went to see it at the cinema I commented on how it was just like Bill and Ted lol
Bill and Ted much better imo. Watched them again recently, still bodacious!
