For it was The Breakfast Club.

I was the perfect age for it when it came out, mid teens. OMG they GOT me! Their parents were arses too, they understood what it was like. Loved it my whole life.

Watched it again at 40 with teens and just thought "What a bunch of whining little shits" It is now my least favourite film of all time! It should have stayed in my memory as once you are the parent of the "misunderstood" teen you realise what an utter prat you were when you were 15!

It's interesting that someone mentioned The History Boys - I taught it years ago at A level and now so can't believe it was on the syllabus and was actually on the GCSE lit syllabus for a little while. I would refuse to teach it now.

boatyardblues · 10/07/2021 21:07

@GinJeanie

Breaking the Waves In fact, anything by Lars Von Trier 😬😱
Same. Breaking the Waves was just fucked up.
TheValeyard · 10/07/2021 21:21

Candyman, was very good in it’s day but it’s awful now

No way, Candyman is and was an utter gem, and it's racial subtext is even more relevant today [strokes chin].

TheNinny · 10/07/2021 21:25

Independence Day. So many stereotypes and cliches I didn’t pick up on as a kid when it was my favourite movie ever

SmokeyDevil · 10/07/2021 21:28

@30degreesandmeltinghere

The human centipede.. Fucking grim.
Why did you watch it the first time?! 😂
30degreesandmeltinghere · 10/07/2021 21:39

One of those must see the end moments!! Exes choice of film.
Dawn til Dusk is a fab film!! Once suggested it to an uncle and he declared he feared for my mind!!

Agree that Ferris Bueller was a bully to his friend. But love the scene in the art gallery.

Beamur · 10/07/2021 21:48

I think Cameron needs a friend like Ferris..

TheValeyard · 10/07/2021 21:51

The problem with Ferris Bueller's Day Off is that, as you get older and take on actual responsibilities, you start to sympathise with Principal Rooney - the guy who, after all, is doing his job.

Beamur · 10/07/2021 22:00

But the Principal gets way too invested in trying to 'get' Ferris 😄

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2021 22:05

Mannequin is a film which should only be one watch. And yet I saw it at the cinema 3 times. 😂

TheValeyard · 10/07/2021 22:16

But the Principal gets way too invested in trying to 'get' Ferris

Only in order for the boy to fully commit to his education! With a couple of different line readings that character could be an inspirational Robin Williams type...

Somanysocks · 10/07/2021 22:17

Everyone said 'you must watch It's a Wonderful Life', once was enough, never again.

WildJelly · 10/07/2021 23:06

Top Gun

I insisted DD watch it at the same age watched it.
Cue a bored DH, a DD saying "you over sold that" and me wondering why I no longer fancied Tom
Cruz and why DD didn't want to marry him

None of us cried, and I definitely cried in the cinema watching it when I was 14 as did my two best friends!

ah now lockdown created the perfect "child torture" situation for me!

I made DS and DD (15 and 16) watch Top Gun in order to "get" Hot Shots which does really bear a rewatching. Yes its shit but shit in a piss taking way so..... they hated both which was obviously great revenge for me for them being shites at times (totally not covid related..they are just teens!)

@vanishun

I felt quite sympathetic to Cal and her mum really, neither of whom were delightful creatures but weren't total monsters.

They were both vile, you feel sympathetic towards them?

Cal - "you will honour me like a woman is supposed to honour her husband!"
Then tips the table over and storms off.
Kind of reads I will shag you as you're supposed to as I''m your husband do as I say! Er, no.

The mum, snobbish and foul towards those she deems beneath her.

Quaggars · 11/07/2021 00:48

Yeah, but come on, he was way over invested lol - going round to his house and sticking his head through the dog flap or whatever it was and scaring the crap out of his teenage sister in the process

There comes a line on your path for truth and he went past it lol

Graphista · 11/07/2021 01:28

Nahhh love 80's films!

I'm sat here watching "adventures in babysitting" right now. Totally cheesy implausible plot with some really dodgy scenes... still love it!

Ferris bueller
Dirty dancing
Back to the future
Goonies
Big
Die hard

Especially when Martin Kemp was trying to tell Roman that he would have fancied Shirlie.

That was hilarious!

Did you see the first dates episode Roman was in? Where his date had NEVER heard of his father OR spandau ballet?

DD - she was off to college that fall so was at least 18

I have a confession, I have never seen Schindler's list or Sophie's choice - Cant bring myself to watch them

Heathers is a fantastic film! But then I laughed out loud at shallow grave which prompted them dh to declare me an actual sociopath

@NomNomNominativeDeterminism ferris bueller is still a good film, but at the end, as a parent now, that scene absolutely breaks my heart as Cameron's dad is clearly a toxic cold piece of shit and my heart breaks for Cameron as I don't think he can really break free of that

Bit of an obscure one but a favourite of mine is Some kind of wonderful - but then I had still have a huge crush on Mary Stuart masterson

@Bibbidiboo I think you may have just ruined Gilmore girls for me!

(Not really)

@TillyTottenham yes! Films with a twist really only have that impact once

If you're a horror fan I recommend wishmaster films - if only to tie your brain up in logic knots! You'll find yourself playing "at what point would a well executed and worded wish have improved my life"

@Somanysocks I had to watch wonderful life for uni - bloody awful film!

@WildJelly nah I still love top gun - and cocktail!

TheValeyard · 11/07/2021 01:55

Yeah, but come on, he was way over invested lol - going round to his house and sticking his head through the dog flap or whatever it was and scaring the crap out of his teenage sister in the process

Oh, that every public servant were so dedicated. Truly, Principal Rooney was the hero we needed and not the hero we deserved...

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/07/2021 02:08

Ah well Adventures in Babysitting with Elizabeth....someone.. Shea? Was the the video that was rented by the 19 year old boyfriend I ended up losing my virginity to because he thought I'd like it. I didnt like the film but I liked that he thought about me when renting it. The boyfriend before him rented "Bad Taste" (no..just no) because he thought it was funny. Hmm

OP posts:
PyongyangKipperbang · 11/07/2021 02:10

Oh and the boyfriend who rented Bad Taste never did understand why I wouldnt have sex with him !!

Ugh just caught Weird Science on TV tonight. Yuck! 15 year old boys kissing grown women!

Andylion · 11/07/2021 03:59

I was always a bit that they made one terrible prom dress out of two pretty decent ones though.

That prom dress was truly hideous.

DavidTheDog · 11/07/2021 04:17

Sleepers and Precious both effected me for a long time afterwards. I don’t think I could watch either again.
