School children arriving late on Monday due to Footie

This was doing the rounds on my social media today, I am a teacher, so Is it just me or is this a bad idea? Children have hardly been in school this year anyway. More importantly, I feel that it’s teaching our children the wrong life lesson. Surely, if you choose to stay up late then suck it up on Monday! You can’t be swanning in late on a Monday to work after a weekend of partying.... interested to know if it’s just me. For the record, I enjoy watching football!

@ZeusandClio

It's a huge safeguarding issue. Your child leaves home as normal to go to school, doesn't arrive but because "registers are open " until 10.30 no-one notices or flags it until then. Anything can happen in those 2 hours. Also, schools need to be extra vigilant as domestic violence and abuse increase with big football events, coupled with alcohol. Such a bad idea.
It really isnt

If you think it is then you clearly don't have experience of managing complex safeguarding in an educational setting.

There is an increase in DV during football, children coming in 1.5 hours late is not linked to that.

@Unsoliciteddeckpic I have no interest in the queen whatsoever but respect the fact she is head of the state that's all I'm saying. So if anyone was going to have an influence on a national holiday, I would say it should be her

oblada · 11/07/2021 21:04

@Unsoliciteddeckpic

Is everyone objecting to the extra bank Holiday next year too?
For most people it won't be an extra holiday, just one less holiday to choose from so yes it sounds pretty stupid. Re late at school - it is ridiculous but then again my work is similarly allowing a late start - similarly ridiculous. There really is more to life than football. Having said that it really doesn't matter that much either.

@LadyDanburysCane you seem to be the guardian angel of all patents, they're so bad and you deal with them all the time!

Have a 🥇!!

Do they take it from our annual leave then? So if we have 20 plus BH we only get 19?

Thanks for the medal. But you might be confusing me with someone else as I definitely didn’t say the things you are quoting.

I assume you are a parent. I assume you are a good parent. I assume that if you had a child of appropriate age and sent them to school in time to arrive by 9 am then you would like the attendance officer to contact you before 11 am if they hadn’t arrived? Before I worked in a school setting I didn’t grasp just how big an issue safeguarding is either.

Yes, I don’t get annual leave so will be paid for one day less. My DH will get one day less annual leave.

All employers differ though.

Depends on your contract. If you have 25days incl BH then it's just 9 BH and 19other days. If your contract specifies the BH then it potentially gets the same result. If your contract says 20days plus bank holidays generally without specifying then it would be an extra day off.
oblada · 11/07/2021 21:30

Sorry should have read 28 days incl BH! Tired brain

kowari · 11/07/2021 21:31

@oblada
Thanks, ours is days plus BH not including so should get it as extra then. At least it's summer if not, I lose 3 days to the week between Christmas and New Year already.

Greenmarmalade · 11/07/2021 21:33

It’s not like they can take annual leave!

Let them enjoy it.
(I’m a teacher)

oblada · 11/07/2021 21:34

Just check the wording of your contract ie if it lists the bank holidays for instance. Most employers are now aware of the possibility of extra bank holidays so plan it in the contract lol

Maldives2006 · 11/07/2021 21:38

Omg the angst over a 90minute late start the Private schools have already broken upto or are those kids more intelligent. 90minutes is not going to make the least amount of difference to a child’s education.

But no one is concerned the kids are losing an extra day?

Losing 1.5 hours for a national event is just awful, but 1 day is fine...'cause queen'.

Thats my point. I think most people who are annoyed by the late start just don't like the fact its connected to football.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 12/07/2021 09:54

First time late at primary school through the “naughty” office door this morning. Missed the main gates closing by a couple of minutes! Had to sign in but to use standard computer screen template excuse I am late because I was a little tired/over slept and so missed the gate closing by seconds! Never again children have missed enough schooling already over the past year and sets a bad precedent for unnecessary sloppiness at a leading highly rated and sought after school. This is not the type of school where families cheat the system for days off when sunny and don’t respect education.

TheDevils · 12/07/2021 10:02

Unfortunately those on this thread are showing typical “football mentality” brains …. Or should that be lack of them.

Careful. Your prejudice is showing........

Bingo.

BungleandGeorge · 12/07/2021 12:52

Those who are terribly concerned about children missing a day for the Jubilee- no need to worry it’s in half term!

ButteringMyArse · 12/07/2021 13:04

Not everywhere.

BungleandGeorge · 12/07/2021 13:20

@ButteringMyArse

Not everywhere.
True, Scotland have different holidays. They also have slightly different bank holidays so not sure of the situation there and whether they will just adjust terms.
ButteringMyArse · 12/07/2021 13:51

Also Northern Ireland.

CallmeHendricks · 12/07/2021 13:58

"I'd imagine the parents opposed to the idea will have children there at usual time so it won't make any difference to their own children anyway."

Well, yes it will. Teachers can't exactly plough on with normal lessons with a large group missing, who will wander in at varying times. It means the whole of the first session will be suspended, with those who are in, doing some sort of low-level time-filler activity.
Otherwise, you can guarantee that there would be a host of complaints from the late-comers' parents, saying their child had "missed out."

Starlightstarbright1 · 12/07/2021 19:23

Our school was closed due to covid so it became a none issue
