School children arriving late on Monday due to Footie

This was doing the rounds on my social media today, I am a teacher, so Is it just me or is this a bad idea? Children have hardly been in school this year anyway. More importantly, I feel that it’s teaching our children the wrong life lesson. Surely, if you choose to stay up late then suck it up on Monday! You can’t be swanning in late on a Monday to work after a weekend of partying.... interested to know if it’s just me. For the record, I enjoy watching football!

Good for you @MyDcAreMarvel
You have no idea on my attitude or view on education. I asked a question for discussion... it doesn’t need to get personal , take a chill pill and have a great Friday Smile

Well maybe not everyone, but I guarantee whatever the result, it will be front page of every newspaper on Monday morning.
IMO after such a difficult year, an event like this bringing the country together is unbelievably well timed and great for everyone!

Newkitchen123 · 09/07/2021 18:15

It's a once in a lifetime occasion
I've just seen doing the rounds that Co op are closing early so that the staff can get home
Well done Co op

I think it is a pragmatic approach by the school.

I remember our workplace some time in the 90s allowing people to go and watch an afternoon football match for a couple of hours once, provided they then made up the time.

This way they reduce number of overtired kids, number of 'sick' kids, upset kids who were told they couldn't stay up because of school and then found out half their friends had etc.

Why is the final on a Sunday not Saturday anyway?

Whatinthelord · 09/07/2021 18:15

@m0therofdragons

It’s madness. I’ll be working Monday whatever Boris says so kids may go in tired but not late. Since when did primary kids sleep in after a late night anyway?
Ya that’s the biggest joke of all. Mine could go to sleep at 2am and would still wake up at 6:30
FawnFrenchieMum · 09/07/2021 18:15

My kids are isolating so irrelevant for us anyway but my company have given us all an hour off and said no one is expected in before 10am!

Usdyen · 09/07/2021 18:16

The womens team have been in quite a few major finals in the last 55 years

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/07/2021 18:16

My partners work are doing the same.

kowari · 09/07/2021 18:17

@Usdyen

The womens team have been in quite a few major finals in the last 55 years
Yes, did schools fo the same for the women's in 2009?
FerretBraces · 09/07/2021 18:18

We are also giving everyone a late start at work. It's a lovely idea.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 09/07/2021 18:19

Our school is doing this. Sadly my children will have to go in 9 as normal as I have work but I think it’s a nice idea. It’s the last week of term they aren’t doing much anyway.

MyDcAreMarvel · 09/07/2021 18:20

@ @Muncher75 You have no idea on my attitude or view on education. yes I do, you made your view very clear with this statement.
Children have hardly been in school this year anyway.

Lemonmelonsun · 09/07/2021 18:21

It's a one off, it's good for the country, its a bonding experience, its exciting and its fun.
All those things I feel out weigh whatever is being taught Monday morning. Esp when most teaching is really done, reports handed out etc.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 09/07/2021 18:23

It’s a brilliant idea and I love the fact so many schools are doing it.

Lemonmelonsun · 09/07/2021 18:25

Well our schools have not mentioned it but I'm allowing dc to go in late if they want.

TheMarzipanDildo · 09/07/2021 18:25

We did that when I was in primary school. Good memories.

However- “talk about the National Anthem”? Eww.

EssentialHummus · 09/07/2021 18:25

I think it’s a lovely thing as a one-off. I just feel for the poor teachers who need to be in for 8 or earlier!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/07/2021 18:26

Bloody hell it's one day. At the end of term. I don't think a couple of hours is the end of the World considering how much has been missed so far.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/07/2021 18:27

My school aren’t doing it but the head has reminded us that we’ll have lots of tired children on Monday morning. Yay! It’s my first week back from maternity leave and I’m covering a Y5 class so that’ll be fun…

I won’t be watching the football as I couldn’t care less.

TurquoiseDragon · 09/07/2021 18:28

Not a problem here, kids broke up today.

Burnt0utMum · 09/07/2021 18:29

DS wants to watch it but DD isn't interested although she might just stay up anyway to be a part of it. I'm working as usual on Monday and have a hospital appointment in the morning so will have to work earlier or later to fit around that. The school only let us know today that they can go in late so no time to arrange anything. They'll have to go in at their normal time so I can get to the hospital. Only now they'll be sat in the classroom on their own til their classmates show up.

newnortherner111 · 09/07/2021 18:30

Before you ask, the 1966 final was in the school holidays, the 2003 Rugby World Cup on a Sunday morning, and the 2019 Cricket World Cup finished at around 7pm.

Only an issue I suspect in England (and Wales) as I bet many other countries have children on school holidays already. Just checked Paris and they broke up on Wednesday last.

Newmumatlast · 09/07/2021 18:30

Its not that deep

Muncher75 · 09/07/2021 18:32

You’re obviously up for a fight @MyDcAreMarvel however, I am not. My statement was pointing out a fact. Children who go to mainstream school have had a very disruptive year with lockdowns.
My views on education are broad and not relevant to this topic.
🙄 I’m not going to entertain you anymore

It’s ridiculous and makes me furious actually. I have asked for time out of school to see family who live abroad and it was denied. A friend had her request to take son out of school for her wedding denied. There are lots of things important to us. The football is not important to everyone they should be consistent or relax and allow special time for families when requested.
