School children arriving late on Monday due to Footie

This was doing the rounds on my social media today, I am a teacher, so Is it just me or is this a bad idea? Children have hardly been in school this year anyway. More importantly, I feel that it’s teaching our children the wrong life lesson. Surely, if you choose to stay up late then suck it up on Monday! You can’t be swanning in late on a Monday to work after a weekend of partying.... interested to know if it’s just me. For the record, I enjoy watching football!

Arf, playing by the rules, dd 1 has always been such a goody goody play by the rules and I'm afraid several months of zero teaching, contact, response to emails etc from the school has rather shaded her previous pristine views.
I'm aghast that people think everything will crumble if rules are slackended occasionally.

Our school has not given permission for them to be late but, I have.

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 11/07/2021 14:23

It's pathetic. It's a game ffs.

nokidshere · 11/07/2021 14:41

My boys had late nights during school days occasionally, some even on school outings. They went to school at normal time and bed a bit earlier the next day. Children won't break if they stay up late occasionally. Most parents will be working at normal time anyway so plenty of children will have to go in.

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 11/07/2021 14:48

My personal view (teacher and parent):

It’s a one off, so kids should be allowed to stay up late if they want to.

Not all parents (me included!) have the luxury of being able to bring our kids to school at 10.30…

It’s nearly the end of term anyway, kids should just come to school at the normal time! Some kids coming in early/some late isn’t really ideal.

CalamityJaneDoe · 11/07/2021 14:52

My only issue with it is that if they do it for the men’s, they’d better do it for the women’s if they make it to the final!

ZeusandClio · 11/07/2021 15:06

It's a huge safeguarding issue. Your child leaves home as normal to go to school, doesn't arrive but because "registers are open " until 10.30 no-one notices or flags it until then. Anything can happen in those 2 hours. Also, schools need to be extra vigilant as domestic violence and abuse increase with big football events, coupled with alcohol. Such a bad idea.

omgthepain · 11/07/2021 16:03

My daughters school have said children need to come in at normal time tomorrow or parents can bring them at 11:45 ready for them lunch but no later and not in between 8:55-11;45 as it too disruptive for the other children
Sounds reasonable
My daughter will be there at normal time as her childminder will take her and we will be going to work as normal

There says the voice of doom!!!

Drovememad · 11/07/2021 16:28

@HeyDemonsItsYaGirl it's not a game, it's a final of a huge tournament!

Yawn.There's always one!

Go and doom-monger elsewhere.

It’s a football game, absolutely ridiculous the fuss being made when there are many, many people not interested whatsoever.

On here yes but back in the real world, a great many people are very interested even those of us that are fairweather fans

I agree. Parents are normally contacted by the school at 9:30 if they haven't phoned the child in sick and they don't turn up. A child could be missing until 11am if they are not absent until 10:30.
x2boys · 11/07/2021 16:47

But surely schools that are allow g this could put in safe guarding measures, like message us on class Dojo if your child is going to come in late etc

If you're not interested, you can just carry on your life as normal then. No need to come and piss on everyone's chips.
SmokedPaprikaHotChilliPowder · 11/07/2021 16:55

DSs school is doing this. But it's half 9. Children are allowed to go to school on time. It's optional. The head said he'd rather the kids enjoyed the game, and got enough sleep.

Whatever you think of football and the weirdness it brings out in some men, this is still an historical moment. I'm not that fussed, but we are watching it as a family and I hope it'll be a nice memory for the kids seeing their country in a final of a big sporting event.

Yes they've missed loads of school this past year. But what's an hour two weeks before the end of the school year?! The kids deserve a bit of excitement and joy. Why are so many so keen to poop on the party?

Yep I bet all The murderers are currently planning this, just await Monday afternoon and the 1000s if missing children being reported.

I honestly wonder how some people live any sort of normal lives!

Jesus, the level of hysteria, worry and paranoia is unreal.

They need something in place. Is it just primaries doing it or secondaries too? At secondary, with the numbers involved it could be a huge burden on office staff to work out who is late on purpose and whose parents need calling.
kowari · 11/07/2021 17:10

@Drovememad
Do you think if a school has a normal procedure to call parents of missing students then this should be abandoned then? Children are not magically safe because football.

ZeusandClio · 11/07/2021 17:26

It's not hysteria or saying that I think things will go wrong. The idea of safeguarding is that you think of the worst possible scenario and take steps to prevent that. I am not doom mongering or saying that things will go wrong or children will be abducted or anything like that. I am saying that not knowing what time children are expected to arrive at school and not flagging up unexplained absence is a safeguarding issue for schools. I'm sure most rational people don't think that teachers are criminals or paedophiles yet also think that DBS checks reasonable and proportionate, just like a 10 year old not arriving at school at the expected time would probably be innocent but should be flagged as soon as possible.

deleteasappropriate · 11/07/2021 17:57

I'm in Hartlepool (the source of the late school start!) and I think it's a great idea. It's the last week of term, nothing major is happening and it will be a great memory for the kids.

I'm now in my 60s and distinctly remember watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. My parents woke us all up to watch it in the middle of the night in grainy black and white, and the memory of the excitement has stayed with me. Football is not so much my thing, but my husband has great memories of watching the 1966 World Cup with his family (he was 6 years old at the time). There's nothing wrong with making a few memories along with way.

As an extra Hartlepool bonus, our fabulous female bosses have also given all staff the full day off on Monday too, whether we win or lose, but we all think it's coming home!

deleteasappropriate · 11/07/2021 17:58

Should have also said that the school in question is open at the usual time, the teachers aren't having a lie in :)

Drovememad · 11/07/2021 18:28

Of course @ZeusandClio there is no work around for that at all!

Jesus, it is absolute hysteria!!

Get a grip.

ZeusandClio · 11/07/2021 18:36

@Drovememad Lovely to hear there is a work around that will maintain normal safeguarding practices. What is it?

Drovememad · 11/07/2021 18:48

@ZeusandClio it's called communication! Via a thing called email! My child will be attending at 9 or my child will be attending at 10.30.

It's marvellous, I'm not sure why you've not thought of it!

It's a bit like your child having a doctors appointment in the morning, so will be late to school, you let them know.

If only it hadn't be thought of before.
