School children arriving late on Monday due to Footie

This was doing the rounds on my social media today, I am a teacher, so Is it just me or is this a bad idea? Children have hardly been in school this year anyway. More importantly, I feel that it’s teaching our children the wrong life lesson. Surely, if you choose to stay up late then suck it up on Monday! You can’t be swanning in late on a Monday to work after a weekend of partying.... interested to know if it’s just me. For the record, I enjoy watching football!

@ ButteringMyArse

In case anyone who is not football literate -
a global South American superclasico to decide the 2021 champion - Brazil versus Argentina! Arguably probably the two best national teams of the world.

Brazil and Argentina will meet for the 34th time at the Copa America. Braziljugarán por Copa América por 34° ocasión. Brazil won 10 games, Argentina won 15 and the rest of the games finished level. This is the eigth time they have played in Brazil and the hosts have never lost.

Stadium: Maracaná (Río de Janeiro) arguably the Mecca and home of football
Date: Saturday 10 July 2021
Time: 21:00 Rio de Janeiro (00:00 GMT Saturday)

Yep, watching that one tonight! But it is a fact that we are currently in an era of European dominance, which I have my suspicions that the poster trying to argue that this isn't a major final didn't actually know. Whether that will end or not in 2022 remains to be seen.

ButteringMyArse · 10/07/2021 13:04

PS go Brazil!

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 10/07/2021 13:20

Brazil versus Argentina has to be the one to watch. I enjoyed England beating Germany as this is another good classic match up. Brazil versus Argentina or Italy/Germany/France/Spain and maybe England would be the ultimate.

@Newkitchen123

It's a once in a lifetime occasion I've just seen doing the rounds that Co op are closing early so that the staff can get home Well done Co op
Oh, please. My parents were teenagers when England reached the World Cup final in 1966, so twice in a lifetime for them and MANY others. Enough of the hyperbole.
ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 10/07/2021 13:43

Gosh there is low expectations for the England men’s football team if being finalists is going forward a very rare occurrence based on history. The assumption that England are overachieving and will never contest a final again for generations. I rather optimise this current sporting competitiveness to consolidate future success! England might win again next time.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 10/07/2021 18:16

If they’re permitted to arrive at 10:30, they’re not late. They’re on time.

School’s just starting later than usual.

@Lefthousewithpooinhair

In my book this is a capitol idea!
  1. It lets everyone have a relaxed Monday
  2. It means there won’t be any issue letting the kids stay up to watch it. And EVERYONE will be watching it
  3. This is definitely a 1 off and it’s 55 years since England were in a final
  4. It’s coming home!
EVERYONE will not be watching it! Me and my DC won't because we think football is boring. I don't suddenly gain an interest in men kicking a ball around because it's England playing. I couldn't care less if they win or not.
Mandalay246 · 10/07/2021 20:54

It's ridiculous, it's a good life lesson, you stay up late you are tired the next day. I like most people will be at work at 9am Monday morning so I won't be drinking (much) because im an adult! Watching football doesn't mean you have to drink and children staying up to 10pm doesn't mean they can't get up at 8am!

This! I can't believe an entire nation can't cope with a sporting event happening in the evening (not the middle of the night, as regularly happens here). It's pathetic.

x2boys · 10/07/2021 20:59

Oh god the misery on mumsnet it's pathetic
Back in the real world the rest of the country football fans and those of us who only really watch the tournaments are all delighted that England have reached the final
My child's special school posted a video today of some of the children dancing and singing to vindaloo and kicking a ball down the corridor, it really cheered me up.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/07/2021 21:06

I don’t see the harm in it. It’s 1.5hrs later. Not a lot will be missed in that time

Tho as someone pointed out, it’s not the first time England has been in the final in 55yrs

Just England male football first time

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 10/07/2021 21:23

Usually, the first 1.5-2 hours are the most productive in schools. The last 1.5-2 hours are the least productive because the children are done for the day. Just saying as lots of people are declaring the children won’t miss much.

The schools allowing this late start are hardly going to have crucial maths and English lessons planned for that morning though so, on this occasion, it won’t make much difference.

Rosesareyellow · 10/07/2021 21:52

Yep. After reading the comments on this thread I actually felt the need to double check the kick off time as I thought I must clearly have it wrong! Nope, it really is 8.00pm. I checked with DH what could be the latest it would finish, he said around 11. People need to get a grip 🤦‍♀️ Also people are being very optimistic here. I mean, obviously I hope we win - but there is a fair chance we won’t, therefore a good chance that people won’t be staying up all night celebrating...

I'm delighted we've reached the final but still think it's ridiculous late starting school for it.

I can't believe you're daft enough to couch it in these terms.

Confused Confused Confused

CatsArePeople · 11/07/2021 11:24

Completely unfair on those who play by the rules. Schools have lost the high ground on attendance after this and I've decided to book tickets to a Sunday concert out of town later in the year now..

And that is fair enough. School is important, but it isn't a prison sentence. Absolutely NOTHING will happen if kids miss a couple of lessons.

Muddydoor · 11/07/2021 11:36

There is no good reason that children should be staying up late for the footy/ sleeping in late. I bet most of the parents doing this will be ones who don’t care when their children get to school anyway. I told dd that she should go in on time as school night blah blah, but now shes got to have time off for covid-bubble risk anyway.

And now football supporting parents are bad ones!

Some people are so fucking narrow minded it's not true.

You’d lose that bet.

I disagree. I feel that this is a historic event, a significant cultural event and a source of national pride and togetherness. And I think children should absolutely be able to participate in that. I do think it should be an earlier kick off and don't understand why it isn't.
ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 11/07/2021 12:06

Well my young child will be in bed as usual for primary school early tomorrow. I however will be in the sky lounge garden bubble drinking bubbles at the barbecue grill and pizza oven sampling artisan Neapolitan pizzas with English only additional pineapple topping watching on the big projector screen set up. It’s a corporate cosmopolitan gathering so no yob behavioural nonsense and some selected Italian guests to add drama. I suspect it may be a long night and refreshing to have a sporting event to cheer on in a private Covid safe jolly with fellow Covid PCR negative and double vaccinated conscientious types only for mutual safety. I am sure we will hear neighbours below and over the skyline horizon with adjacent high rise residential complexes when the goals are scored as per previous games. Throughly enjoyed part 1 of the two part football finals festivities with super exciting Coppa America 2021 finals between the two leading world football giants from Rio overnight as Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 to be crowned South American football champions: and looking forward to part 2 and hopefully a home victory against a very competitive Italian team. Let’s hope we can get the Italian job done but best of luck and may the best team win fairly! Come on England! Sweet (̶c̶h̶a̶r̶i̶o̶t̶)̶ Caroline….

I must be a shit parent then. I asked DD if she wanted to watch it, expecting her to say no, and she said yes. DH also wants to watch it so we are. I wasn’t going to but I will join in the social side of it. My parents have just got a new, insanely large tv so we’re going to theirs with pizza and snacks. It’ll be a nice evening.

I 100% care about my DD’s schooling and she’ll be going in at normal time. Her school haven’t offered late start but she’d have been in anyway. I’m a teacher and will be in at my usual time.

ButteringMyArse · 11/07/2021 14:15

Gosh, don't feel you have to explain yourselves. There are some people whose disapproval should really be a source of pride to us.

NautaOcts · 11/07/2021 14:17

It’s fine. Our school have allowed it too but mine will be going in at normal time as little one is normally up until 10pm anyway!
