There should be no England fans at final IMO

I cannot believe there is not more disgust at the actions of one (or more) English fan(s).

Aside from trying to cheat way to an England victory by distracting the goalkeeper during a penalty, lasers are phenomenally dangerous to eyes. The goalkeeper could have retinal damage.

I think a “lesser” nation would have been kicked out, but England won’t. But in my view the fans should be banned - there has to be consequences for criminal actions. Otherwise it will happen again.

Suspect I’ll be in the minority but it’s frankly embarrassing we have fans who do this.

I don't have an issue with people loving the game, but I do have an issue with it taking over

In what was has it taken over? I've seen people complaining about TV coverage, but it's nothing compared to the wall to wall tennis that's on at the moment. It's once every 4 years and there have been 2 televised games this week. If it's the news you mean, that's because it's the most popular sport in the country and the success of the English team is newsworthy.

It's a shame your son had such a bad experience within football, that should never happen. When you say athletics is more inclusive, I'd be interested in what way.

WhatIsThisPlease · 09/07/2021 15:22

I was on a train the other day where two young (pissed) lads tried to set fire to a man'a newspaper that he was reading.
Should all the passengers have been arrested and fined?
What a ridiculous statement.

User135644 · 09/07/2021 16:52

All football players are very competitive. None of them are there just to have a jolly kick around.

If nothing else, it could have been subconscious sportsmanship after a controversial goal.

I was watching it at the time, bemused by Denmark had been turned into mannequins. It seemed to me like they were just waiting for England to equalise and then after Sterling missed a sitter, they scored it themselves.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 09/07/2021 16:54

Oh good lord you're still going 😂

Subconscious sportsmanship, scoring a goal for England because they'd missed one. Seriously listen to yourself. Absolutely bonkers!!

buffyajp · 09/07/2021 17:16

@WorraLiberty

Wahhhhh! Wahhhh!

FFS when is this bleating about England going to stop? 🙄🙄

I've heard less whinging from hungry, tired toddlers than I have since the start of this football tournament.

Well said. It’s pathetic. England are in the final, get over it.

It's coming home!

I agree completely

Athletics is in no way more inclusive than football!

@ZoBo123

What about the countless times that black players for England have been racially abused by opposition supporters and all their countries get us a small fine
What about the times black players from any team are racially abused by any oppositions followers. It wasn't long ago when British fans were hurling abuse at black British football players
Bryonyshcmyony · 09/07/2021 17:22

At least we really cracked down on it unlike some other countries

Yes @User135644 the team that played dirty tactics throughout have subconsciously lost the game out of a sense of 'sportsmanship' 😂😂

"English fans are so disrespectful, no other fans are like them"

Here are so Italy "fans" Hmm

There should be no England fans at final IMO

Athletics is in no way more inclusive than football

In our experience it is. Football was all about winning. My son wasn't a great player, but his year group had three teams and he was in the "worst" one, so it should not have mattered. I used to do the pitch bookings (ie when we had home matches, I arranged the pitch and referee which was every other week in season, plus the odd cup match). I stopped doing it after two years and surprise surprise he was chucked out of the team. The good players were in a different team, the whole point of having more than one team was to "stream" the boys and allow everyone to take part. But no. And before we had three teams the idea was the same 7 players would play every match the and rest would only get to train.

Athletics on the other hand has lots of leagues and league events have lots of races. If you are not good enough to be in the A or B race, you can race as a non-scorer. As an official it can be quite tiring to have wave after wave of non-scorers racing down the track, and it makes for a long day, but it's so good for the kids and they all get to have a go. Anyone can do cross-country too, and of course running events are open to all.

Obviously there is an elite element to the sport, like needing a good for age time to get a London marathon place unless you pay/raise over the odds for a charity place or are very lucky in the ballot, but on the whole we've found it a much better experience. And the parents aren't up the arses of the parents of the most talented athletes like they were in football.

igelkott2021 · 09/07/2021 17:40

In what was has it taken over other things getting cancelled for it and the fact that you cannot go out or do anything without hearing everyone yelling or groaning depending on whether England have the ball, or in this case Italy - it's the same every single time and it is really tedious. You can't even watch anything else because it's summer and everyone has their windows open so you can hear everything constantly.

I can exist very easily without hearing anything about Wimbledon except the bare facts of who is in today's semi-final or whatever it happens to be. And the idea of people not going into work on Monday morning is completely ridiculous.

However, it is 55 year since the England team made it to a final...so I'll shut up now Grin

igelkott2021 · 09/07/2021 17:40

(that's senior male team - the youth squads have - and won)

Spidey66 · 09/07/2021 17:43

OP would you be happy if this happened in your kids school and an end of term trip or party was cancelled because one child was naughty?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/07/2021 17:51

I love the way the miserable fuckers are out in force over the football on MN. God forbid any of us should enjoy ourselves.

The booing was wrong, the German girl tweets were wrong, the laser pointer was wrong. Bad behaviour is not exclusive to England fans though.

If you can be bothered try reading up on other country's fans. I doubt you will though as it wouldn't fit the narrative of England bad, everywhere else good.

Bovrilly · 09/07/2021 18:36

If nothing else, it could have been subconscious sportsmanship after a controversial goal.

If the Danes are so sportsmanlike, how come they moved the wall at the free kick in the first place? As a PP noted, wouldn't it have been easier to take the free kick fairly instead of having to implement a secret plan to let England equalise?

Romanoff · 09/07/2021 19:14

Fucks sake 'subconscious sportsmanship'. Never heard anything as ridiculous. Confused

Lizzy1980 · 10/07/2021 08:44

PinkSparklyPussyCat I totally agree. It doesn’t fit the anti English narrative for them to actually do a bit of research and find out just what other countries teams get up to. They’re having too much fun on the anti English bandwagon that is so fashionable at the moment.
As for banning all English fans from games just because of a handful of idiots, possibly the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. I bet the OP is great fun at parties, lol

mrsorms · 10/07/2021 10:06

I will admit to being a miserable fucker. I am a miserable and cynical old fucker. I can only just remember the frenzy in 1966, but that was the World Cup, and the world was a very different place then. Britain's place in the world and its identity was also very different. It was the Union Jack that most people flew, not the cross of St George.

This country is being stoked up into some hysteria about a football game. If it could be stoked up and impassioned about the thousands of unnecessary deaths through the government's mishandling of the pandemic; the soaring mental health crisis in the young or the swathe of unemployment due to the government's lack of productive discourse over Brexit, then I might feel this nation had some hope of turning its collective soul to something that really mattered.

I will enjoy the game on Sunday like many people (although I do hope that Italy win, because the jingoism of an 'England' win would be insufferable). Yet it does not really matter. It is a game played by a handful of very well paid young men. Their performance does not represent 'England' or the state of this nation and the idea that there is some sort of national pride or international reputation at stake is ludicrous: those things went generations ago!

Romanoff · 10/07/2021 10:11

Jingoism? As in war like patriotism?

Really?

Honestly, I hope England win. Sounds like most people believe England was much better in t'olden days when people were more patriotic. Not sure how true it is, but I see alot of people think it

Maybe this could be the start of English people getting some of that back.
