There should be no England fans at final IMO

I cannot believe there is not more disgust at the actions of one (or more) English fan(s).

Aside from trying to cheat way to an England victory by distracting the goalkeeper during a penalty, lasers are phenomenally dangerous to eyes. The goalkeeper could have retinal damage.

I think a “lesser” nation would have been kicked out, but England won’t. But in my view the fans should be banned - there has to be consequences for criminal actions. Otherwise it will happen again.

Suspect I’ll be in the minority but it’s frankly embarrassing we have fans who do this.

OP posts:
MrsWhites · 09/07/2021 09:48
  1. Not all England fans are dickheads!
  2. Of course the idiot with the laser should be banned and dealt with by the police but let’s not tar all fans with the same brush!
  3. Lots of players from every nation/team go down easily in the box, it’s the nature of football. Italy will certainly be ready to do it.
  4. He saved the penalty so the laser wasn’t actually the reason Denmark lost.
  5. Denmark’s goal should actually have been disallowed.
  6. The Danish press have been actually pretty horrible, mocking England’s Covid death rate - if this was English media mumsnet would be in uproar!

Just let people enjoy the football and stop the ridiculous negativity!

LizzieW1969 · 09/07/2021 09:50

I am reliably informed that other teams' fans boo the other side's national anthem too - eg Denmark did it to Wales. It is not exclusive to England fans.

A German fan interviewed on TV said that they and the Dutch fans regularly boo each other’s national anthems. So yes, it isn’t just English fans who are tribal.

I think it’s an extension of football club team rivalries during the football season. They certainly call each other names!!

I don’t know how you could stop this booing short of banning all fans from watching matches.

Rubyrecka · 09/07/2021 09:53

@ChainJane

All you've done is list other teams that also behave like idiots. Does comparing poor behaviour with poor behaviour make it justified?

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

Do you think Ukraine should be banned for the racist abuse Sterling received? Or Denmark for booing the Welsh for most of the first half? Or Hungary for shouting 'fgot' at a gay player?

Absolutely. I don't think I've suggested anywhere that any other team shouldn't be held accountable. It seems if you make a statement about the english fans all u get as a response on here is 'yeah but what about x team, they had (insert racism, violence etc) are u saying that's ok??'

It's completely deflective and they need to be held accountable.

Teddy1970 · 09/07/2021 10:01

FrangipaniDeLaSqeegeeMop if you've read the whole thread (which I don't think you have) then you'll see I posted how much English players are racially abused, in fact they're the most racially abused team in Western Europe, it's vile, so no, I'm not a Sally who's gone silent...

Flowerlane · 09/07/2021 10:07

Think it’s very very strange that you keep saying it’s ‘humiliating for England’.
I don’t and also don’t know anyone who is ‘humiliated’ by it and we are big football fans.

Bovrilly · 09/07/2021 10:13

I think it's fair enough to question a poster who wants sanctions for England over and above anything received by other teams whose fans have behaved in exactly the same way. Just looks like they're having a go at England for fun or some other reason. (Or perhaps more likely they know nothing about football and think this is the first time an anthem has been booed or a laser used. Comes across as lazy, ignorant stereotyping.)

Romanoff · 09/07/2021 10:14

They're unsportsmanlike and it's time for consequences.

Which unsportsman behaviour are exclusive to England fans?

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 09/07/2021 10:24

@Teddy1970 I have read the whole thread and that wasn't getting at you at all! I completely agree with all your (excellent) posts - the Sensitive Sally's was me turning it round to people who are enraged by booing but happy to ignore homophobia and racism because it hasn't come from England

2klightyears · 09/07/2021 10:25

Until France a few years ago, I'd only attended our home games. Having had the experience of the group stages in France I do really understand how bad our travelling fans are. We have a really bad reputation abroad, it is fully justified. It's a minority, but a very significant minority. Let's not pretend an do "what about ..."

We should be proud of our team. They've been excellent and we'd be well deserved winners.

Gah I'm sorry about that! This thread is moving so fast I can't keep up! And yes you're spot on.

Bovrilly · 09/07/2021 10:36

There were 65,000 fans at the semi-final. Thousands of them out in London afterwards, celebrating our first final for 55 years. And how many arrests? 20, for common assault, public order and assault on police. Nothing serious, no "rampaging". I'd say that was pretty good going. Well done, England fans.

RuggerHug · 09/07/2021 10:46

I don't have any real skin in this game but I just want to say that branding all supporters with the scumbag stick is how the Sun and the government at the time got away with selling Hillsborough as the victims fault. The ones giving the bad reputation need to be weeded out/punished and unfortunately that might only happen with a shock of everyone having to leave like I said upthread, but I think it's not on to say everyone is at fault. It's unfortunately become part of the duty of decent supporters to call out the ones giving them all a bad name and do something about it, not just say 'well I never did anything bad'. Standing by is as good as approving in these cases.

Ponoka7 · 09/07/2021 10:52

The only embarrassing thing has been Boris in an England top. For Carrie to be out in public with him, it must be love.

@Rubyrecka, have you missed all the other matches were the fans booed the opponent's anthem?
Are people just watching the England games and thinking it's just us?
As for violence, England is way down on the list. Roma and Spanish fans cause carnage when they play at Anfield (I live in Liverpool) and there's usually arrests for violence, including a few murder charges.

User135644 · 09/07/2021 10:53

The Danish press have been actually pretty horrible, mocking England’s Covid death rate - if this was English media mumsnet would be in uproar!

While that was crass and not necessary, you could feel the anger of Denmark and it boiled over. They were cheated the other night.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 09/07/2021 10:59

@User135644 you've posted about England cheating a number of times on different threads over the last few days. But can you actually explain in what way the players cheated to a point where the 'stole' the game from Denmark?

Because the rest of us can see that England were a far stronger team and played a much cleaner match and when the Denmark manager sent a load of subs on to play dirty fouls (a poor decision which resulted in them being a man down towards the end), they weren't dirty enough to actually do any damage or rack up any goals.

mrsorms · 09/07/2021 11:01

OK,

I am going to use this thread as a vent as well. I am totally disgusted with the behaviour of a small number of fans (the laser incident, the fireworks, the beating up of fans from other countries, the booing at national anthems and so on). I am also disgusted at the government for packing 80,000 people into Wembley as Covid surges through the country again. I am sick of grave and serious issues being hidden behind this frenzy and, although I have respect for the England team, who have played well and behaved impeccably, I will be glad when we are beaten by Italy on Sunday and the whole bloody thing is put to bed for another four years.

I hate to tell you this but the World Cup starts in 16 months.
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 09/07/2021 11:05

@User135644

And yet when public school rugger buggers drink pints of each others piss and stick celery up their arse, its a jolly wheeze and just a bit of harmless fun

Who are they harming? Rugby fans know how to behave at matches.

Hahahahaha

Never been to a Rugby match @User135644 ?

And as for the players, never heard of a football player being banned for sexually assaulting another www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jul/07/huddersfield-kenny-edwards-10-match-ban-for-inserting-finger-into-opponent-rugby-league

the80sweregreat · 09/07/2021 11:05

I have news : it's the World Cup next year , so the whole thing will be back again ( and the celebrations for the Queen being on the throne for seventy years or whatever that is about too)
Lots going on , so let's hope covid will be under control by then too.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 09/07/2021 11:06

It's not that it should be 'banned' but these fans need to learn some manners. Problem is, a lot of these fans have been brainwashed by GB News.

Why don't you just admit to being a classist snob? It's SO obvious you're afraid of the working class man.

2klightyears · 09/07/2021 11:06

@RuggerHug, Standing by is as good as approving in these cases. ... It is very easy to say this. I've had the horrible experience of being close to, in the company of these scum in the group qualifications in France. They are intimidating, threatening, etc.

It was a shocking contrast with the huge Belgian crowds, lots of Tunisians and a handful from Panama. While many of our supports were wonderful, I saw just too many fights, shitting in the streets, etc.

I will say that at home we're better behaved.

Rubyrecka · 09/07/2021 11:24

@Bovrilly @Romanoff see this is kinda my point. The defensiveness over takes any common sense.

I'm not saying it's all England but the post I'm responding too is about England fans. If it were about Welsh, Ukrainian fans etc behaving in the same way, my posts wouldn't change.

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop please don't insinuate anyones happy to ignore racism or homophobia and use that as a basis prove your point or to try to minimise what they are being investigated for.

It's all wrong and they (all teams, not just England don't get your knickers in a twist) still need to be held accountable whether its racism, homophobia, shining lasers in people's eyes, setting off fireworks etc etc etc.

mrsorms · 09/07/2021 11:33

'I hate to tell you this but the World Cup starts in 16 months.'

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Another point, why are so many of the games in this tournament played at Wembley?

But you are missing the point.

Of course people are going to say 'what about?'

Because op is suggesting England fan are banned based on behaviours also exhibited by other countries fans. Denmark booed Wales, Denmark let smoke bombs off, Denmark should have been allowed the first goal and technically cheated.

You can't work it like that. If one country or its fans are banned, all countries exhibiting the same and worse behaviour have to be banned.

But no one ever calls for Ukraine, to be banned, for example.

And I can't be defensive because I am not a football fan, though I saw some replays as do is.....and I am not English Hmm

Absolutely, people need to held accountable. England have been fined and they are trying to locate whoever had the laser.

No one on this thread has suggested it's OK or than nothing should happen. But also England shouldn't face bigger sanctions than other teams.

Its disingenuous to say that this isn't doesn't have some Anti English Sentiment driving it.

If they are going to start banning teams and fans for certain behaviour, that's fine. Just do it across the board.
