Bun fight for Monday off work

Upamountain43 · 08/07/2021 08:14

I wonder how many people are grovelling at their boss right now to get Monday off work. Just in case of the need for hangover recovery time.

Calling in a sickie is not going to work on Monday - unless your boss beats you to it and calls in first of course.

@Needapoodle

For the hard of reading among us, my post above was in response to someone who said they won't have childcare if it's a bank holiday, and not everyone gets bank holidays off.

If you want bank holidays off then you're free to get a job in an office.

Actually I don’t work bank holidays. So you don’t need an office job to not work them. But I am working Monday, so no, I can’t plan last minute childcare. Ffs, why the difference is so hard to comprehend I don’t know. 🙄
Needapoodle · 10/07/2021 21:54

Funnily enough i wasnt talking about you and your personal circumstances.

Mustangmolly · 10/07/2021 22:00

I work in retail and my employer has stated that the shops are closing to WATCH the game. On their notices and posters, they even say that Monday hours will resume as normal. My rotas are put in place 4 weeks in advance so I'm working 5.30 am and that won't change 😂 basically our (verrrrry big) employer has said "sod the hangover, you need to be in" 🤷🏻‍♀️

VanGoghsDog · 10/07/2021 22:40

Monday won't be declared a bank holiday, why do people think this is even possible?? It's need a royal wotsit, the PM can't just do it, and they'd never do it with no notice.

The Coop is shutting shops early (I hope staff are still being paid their full shift), my employer (part of the govt) has said we can start an hour later Monday and internal meetings have been put back.

I'll watch it but I won't have a drink, so I'll just have a bit of a lie in.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/07/2021 05:56

It's not like everyone gets the day off on bank holidays anyway and many that do would expect the people who work in essential services and retail, hospitality and leisure to be working.

Obviously the emergency services and power, utility and communications people need to still work but can you imagine the complaints if all the shops, petrol stations, pubs, takeaways and restaurants decided to close and all people could do was sit at home or go for a walk or out for a picnic and make do with the provisions they already had?

MrsDThomas · 11/07/2021 07:24

Ill go to work as usual for 7:45. Like mist people in Wales

Happier if 🇮🇹 Win.

I think it is great that there are schools and employers being flexible regarding Monday.

As an England fan, I had Monday blocked off in my diary for potential annual leave months ago. We are leaving in 2 hours to drive down to Wembley and have tickets for the match. We are staying over-night and coming back Monday. Luckily my DS has now finished school (Y11) but if it had been last year when the final was played, as planned, then I would have just taken him out of school on the Monday.

I have watched England home and away for 30 years and my DS for 13 years - so this is huge for us. I think it is amazing that a large proportion of the country are getting behind the team and watching.

If you don’t like football, then just quietly move on and leave the rest of us to enjoy our time. It’s been a long wait. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I’m a freelance translator and I WFH so it doesn’t affect me - my project manager is on holiday but might still send me work. And I barely drink.

PhilSwagielka · 11/07/2021 07:43

@Gilly12345

Why get pissed to watch football?

Why the obsession with getting pissed?

I won’t be. I live alone and I only like drinking with friends, and I’m staying home for the game.
PhilSwagielka · 11/07/2021 08:12

@robbooftheford

Womens football is crap, that's why nobody watches it!
No it isn’t. Just because you don’t watch it doesn’t mean others don’t.
warmfluffytowels · 11/07/2021 08:17

All non-hospitality businesses here are shutting early tonight so staff can watch the match Smile

Many are closed tomorrow too and all the local schools are allowing kids to arrive as late as 10.45am with no penalty.

I think it's great - it's a huge event for sport fans and if you don't want to watch then you can go to bed and get up as normal or just enjoy a lie in Wink

PhilSwagielka · 11/07/2021 08:19

Question for Italians on here - is Italy like Spain when it comes to kids’ bedtimes? Do Italian kids go later than British ones?

warmfluffytowels · 11/07/2021 08:39

Definitely.

I'm not Italian but went on holidays there as a kid. It was totally normal to see kids as young as 2-3 years old running around and playing at 11pm or later.

It's the UK that has this odd obsession with putting kids to bed at 6pm - I've never heard of it happening anywhere else Grin

HarebrightCedarmoon · 11/07/2021 08:54

Perhaps Italian kids somehow magically don't get up still at their usual time but are an absolute nightmare all day because they are so tired.

warmfluffytowels · 11/07/2021 09:00

Italian primary schools generally start early 7-8am) and finish at 1pm - kids have a nap afterwards.

So their routine is probably very different to in the UK - less sleep at night but they keep naps going much longer than we do.

It's normal for kids on the continent to stay up until 9/10pm regularly - 6pm bedtimes are a very British phenomenon.

Eggsley · 11/07/2021 09:31

@Lucyccfc68 I hope you have a fabulous time!!

I've had two of my team of 5 ask for Monday off as annual leave. That's fine with me, it's one day and we can just about manage. One is football mad and the other is young 'un and will be watching at the pub so I hope they both have a great evening and enjoy their day off on Monday.

I'll be watching at home, might have a drink or two and allll the snacks, but will be up at usual time on Monday. DS1s school is keeping the registers open til 10.15am so DH will drop him off around 9.30 probably.

Sandalwoodhaven · 11/07/2021 09:41

Sorry, can I just ask what time the game actually starts tonight? I thought it was 8pm? If so, it’ll be done by 10pm won’t it? Even if people stayed up for an hour afterward til 11pm, thats hardly a massively late night, hell even midnight and then getting up at say 7 isn’t exactly hideous.

I feel like I’ve either got the time of the game wrong or I’m just missing something? If it started at 10pm I could understand, but 8? It started at 8 on Wednesday didn’t it?

I just don’t see why anyone would need to ‘go mental’ for more than 2 hours after the game (and that’s assuming we win) and if so, that’s only midnight, I’ve been pissed til midnight and managed to get up and go to work, can’t say it’s been pleasant but it’s hardly a big drama. Don’t get all the requests for time off?

BeyondMyWits · 11/07/2021 09:58

If so, it’ll be done by 10pm won’t it

45 min first half
Stoppage time
15 min half time
45 min second half
Stoppage time
5 min break
15 min extra time first half
Stoppage time
Up to 1 min break for a drink
15 min extra time second half
Stoppage time
However long prep for penalties
However long it takes for penalties...

so could be later...

Sandalwoodhaven · 11/07/2021 10:02

Yes but not much later. Still don’t get all the drama tbh. But then I don’t go to bed til 11pm each night anyway, including Sunday’s so maybe that’s why it just doesn’t feel like a big deal to me.

lazyarse123 · 11/07/2021 10:05

@Gilly12345

Why get pissed to watch football?

Why the obsession with getting pissed?

Exactly. It's such a bad message to send that you can only celebrate or commiserate if you get pissed. And as for being tired after one late night how on earth do these people cope with real life?
BeyondMyWits · 11/07/2021 10:28

I cope with real life by going to bed at 10. Every night. I get up at 5. Every day. My life is like that.

warmfluffytowels · 11/07/2021 10:35

I just don’t see why anyone would need to ‘go mental’ for more than 2 hours after the game (and that’s assuming we win) and if so, that’s only midnight, I’ve been pissed til midnight and managed to get up and go to work, can’t say it’s been pleasant but it’s hardly a big drama. Don’t get all the requests for time off?

Because it means you can enjoy yourself without worrying about having to get up early the next morning - why is that so difficult to comprehend?

But then again, I really don't get this faux "Oh, I just don't understaaand" when it comes to football and people wanting to celebrate or commiserate afterwards.

Pinuporc · 12/07/2021 08:06

How is everyone this morning? DS is still asleep so I will let him go to school a bit later (I have an apt that meant I'd be going to work late anyway)

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/07/2021 08:11

Ds(7) went to bed at the end of full time at 10pm he didnt want to stay up. He woke about 7.20am. He seems quite chipper.

Dd(10) stayed up for the lot then read for 20mins on bed so went to sleep 11.30. She emerged at 8am but is grumpy as hell.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/07/2021 08:12

Morning all. I am on my way to work, start at 8.30. Went to bed at gone 11 and woke up at half five so I'm running on coffee today.

8yo DS stayed up to watch and was up surprisingly early! He was awake before 7. He normally is at breakfast club by 7.45 but my mum is off work today and offered to drop him off so he's just going straight to school, he'll be there at normal time though.
