Bun fight for Monday off work

229 replies

Upamountain43 · 08/07/2021 08:14

I wonder how many people are grovelling at their boss right now to get Monday off work. Just in case of the need for hangover recovery time.

Calling in a sickie is not going to work on Monday - unless your boss beats you to it and calls in first of course.

God what a drama ,it's only one night ffs! Surely people can cope with that, and why the assumption fans are going to get wasted. They have to own the hangover, it's tough if they feel like shit monday. You can drink with out getting that bad.
I'd be more concerned on dv being a bigger problem if the win doesn't go the right way.

onemouseplace · 08/07/2021 11:50

@Yellowcrockpot

It never occurred to me j should keep DC (7) up for the match? His dad loves football but when i asked DC if he wanted to watch a game a few weeks ago, he couldn't have been less interested? Am I missing something here? Should I be keeping DC up for the football?!
Our DC have no interest in football whatsoever, DC3 went to bed last night, but the older DC stayed up and watched the second half with us.

I think matches like these are as much cultural events as sporting and good to be part of.

@YonderTweek
I'm impressed your nursery age child has got the concentration to watch 90 min of football. I struggled with extra time yesterday!🤣

The last world cup DS (then 8) was desperate to watch (the game was either early afternoon or fairly early eve iirc) I think he lasted about 15 min before trying to engage us in a game of top trumps and by half time had given up and was playing with Lego!

TheSunShinesBrighter · 08/07/2021 11:51

@BarbaraofSeville

I'm always surprised that so many people expect to be so wiped out by a one off slightly later than normal bedtime and perhaps a few drinks.

Have an afternoon nap if you're so worried about being tired the next day.

I was just thinking the same!
onlyhereforthecake · 08/07/2021 11:51

No worries Loudestcat14 Wink

TheCrowening · 08/07/2021 11:52

I have a busy day Monday. I’ll be tired no doubt, but that’ll be because of the drunkards going past my window late at night shouting.

SofiaMichelle · 08/07/2021 11:54

@IntermittentParps

One of the reasons I hate football, it’s just an excuse for anti social behaviour in some quarters Agree with this. And it's not seen as a matter of national interest when it's women's football, is it?
The reason it's seen as "a matter of national interest" is because of the huge numbers of people who are interested in it, not the other way around with people being interested because someone's told them it's of national interest.

The women's game has a fraction of the followers, hence the lower level of interest in international games and therefore the less coverage in the media and the less interest by government and Royals, etc.

It would be great to see women's football continue to gain momentum. It's come a long way in the last few years.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 08/07/2021 11:56

We'll stay up, but Scottish schools broke up at the end of June. And yy, a lot of countries don't go to bed as early.

BoxHedge · 08/07/2021 11:57

I think if the child is old enough to remember it, they should be encouraged to watch.

We always hear about the 1966 win even now, imagine if you’d been alive but hadn’t been part of the excitement at the time.

I didn’t bother to watch Diana’s funeral (as a teen), and I wish my parents had told me I should. There was so much discussion about it for months afterwards, and even now if Candle in the wind is played ‘oh, remember the funeral’ etc.

newnortherner111 · 08/07/2021 11:59

No-one asked for a day off work because of the large number of Olympic and Paralympic medals won at the last two Games, no-one after an England appearance at a Rugby World Cup final, no-one is expecting time off work if Mark Cavendish equals or beats Eddy Merckx's Tour de France stage win record.

Our Prime Minister has asked us to exercise personal responsibility from July 19th with regards to the pandemic, surely we can be sensible on Sunday evening.

TheSunShinesBrighter · 08/07/2021 11:59

Unless you’re getting the train down from the North to London to watch the final on Sunday it’s just a bit of a late night...
The person I know travelling down is due in work Monday 8.30 am. Will be interesting to see if that happens!

It was definitely a historic occasion for football fans. You’re right, we’ve never heard the last of it...
For non football fans - non so interesting!

Exactly!
DrCoconut · 08/07/2021 12:04

I just hope companies that are closing or messing around with timings are giving people the time as extra and accepting that staff may not be able to make up time on another occasion. It would be unfair for people who don't care about football to lose annual leave that they maybe want to use for something or have their other plans messed up. Same with schools. If they excuse lateness or absence for this they must be as accepting of other activities that affect attendance on a similar basis. It's fine to like sport but people have lost all sense of proportion over this. It's not a historic event/a once in a lifetime opportunity/the second coming. It's a football match, that's all.

TheSunShinesBrighter · 08/07/2021 12:05

DrCoconut

I would be really annoyed if I was told to start late and make the time up out of hours.

My company gave us an 'olympic day' in 2012 so we got to take a day off to watch on tv or in person if lucky.

We'll be taking a day off here if Cav gets his record!!
LalalalalalaLand123 · 08/07/2021 12:44

My DD is 8 and has enthusiastically watched all the England games and will be watching on Sunday. It's a historic event! I let her sleep a bit longer than normal this morning, she was fine.

Haha, I think he is mostly interested in the popcorn to be fair. Grin We have Lego and other things around too so when he gets bored he can build stuff too, and we play all sorts of I spy type games to keep him entertained. The real challenge is to try and not wake him up if he's fallen asleep on the sofa and England scores. Wink

MagicSummer · 08/07/2021 12:45

Pathetic!

yes that's the reason why in the Sunday Times sports section they usually have half a page on womens sport and the other 23 and a half pages on mens. Maybe if they covered more womens sport there would be more interest in it, and not just when you have a woman who's easy on the eye doing well in Wimbledon or athletics.

Coverage of sport in the UK (and probably elsewhere) is sexist and it's chicken and egg.

IntermittentParps · 08/07/2021 12:50

Well that's arse-backwards, isn't it? Why does it have a fraction of the followers? Is what the government should be thinking, and how to change that.

MiaMarshmallows · 08/07/2021 12:53

What time is it on Sunday?

BrandNewHeretic · 08/07/2021 12:55

Monday is a Bank Holiday here in NI Grin

Meraas · 08/07/2021 12:58

@Upamountain43

Wow there is a few right miserable people around. Such a lot of snobbery about liking football and getting a bit drunk to celebrate a once in a lifetime occasion.

If you have no interest in football then why make any comment about it - i cannot remember the last time i spoke about cricket or cars or nail salons or bloody Megan and Harry - things i have no interest in.

I also guess a lot of you have never been to one of this big major occasions - i go to a lot of football and a lot of gigs and often feel like crap the following day whether i have been drinking or not. It the come down from adrenaline - the late night - often we do not get back until 2/3am - and once home you can be too wired to sleep for a couple more hours.

I think those of you putting your children into bed need to have a long think about this - this could be their one and only time to see this and they may not appreciate missing it and having no memories to share for the rest of their lives for absolutely no good reason. If they stay up, get fed up and go to bed, so what - at least give them the chance to experience this major national event.
