Bun fight for Monday off work

229 replies

Upamountain43 · 08/07/2021 08:14

I wonder how many people are grovelling at their boss right now to get Monday off work. Just in case of the need for hangover recovery time.

Calling in a sickie is not going to work on Monday - unless your boss beats you to it and calls in first of course.

@BarbaraofSeville

I'm always surprised that so many people expect to be so wiped out by a one off slightly later than normal bedtime and perhaps a few drinks.

Have an afternoon nap if you're so worried about being tired the next day.

I agree!

My kids watched the match because they wanted to, youngest is 6, so did all their friends.

No-one seemed affected this morning at the school gate. Teachers might get a few yawn, but so what.

If people don't care about football, it's not a big deal. If they do, it doesn't hurt to let the kids enjoy the match, it's been such a shitty year for them anyway.

Sending your kids to bed when they are desperate to watch the match is mean!

@Yellowcrockpot

I was thinking of putting DC to bed at normal time, now I'm questioning if he will be missing out on a potentially historic event that in years to come he won't have any memories of... because "mum put me to bed on time" Grin
the question should be: do they WANT to watch the match or not?

I wouldn't keep them up late if they are not interested, they can watch the highlights at breakfast to keep up with the current events.

If they are really keen, and all their friends are watching, not sure why they should miss out?

GoldenLabbie · 08/07/2021 09:56

We’ve had a shit eighteen months. Any employer or school who begrudges an employee or pupil being hungover or tired on Monday morning is a miserable twat.

Do you think Primary Teachers will expect any sense out of the kids on Monday*

I was thinking the same. Monday will be a write off for teachers as a lot of kids in the class will be shattered!

Boris should just make it a national holiday!
Essentialironingwater · 08/07/2021 09:57

I'm in NI (but we are English) and it's bank holiday on Mon and Tues so no bun fight here because everyone is off and no one cares/has mentioned the football at work! My husband will be watching but it'll be a couple of beers then bed, hardly going to impede him in the morning.

onlyhereforthecake · 08/07/2021 09:58

Pretty sure most adults are not in bed any earlier than the end of the match anyway Grin. Why would anyone be specially tired, unless they decide to get absolutely drunk?

parents are used to be up half the night! (painful as it is)

TiddyAndFletch · 08/07/2021 09:58

I'm off on Monday ... booked the week off about a year ago. And I won't be watching the football because it bores me rigid. Grin

CorrieALanus · 08/07/2021 10:02

Asia here. 3am kickoff. Everyone still managed to get to work on time today.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/07/2021 10:03

@Hoppinggreen

Bloody ridiculous I genuinely hope England win but why that should automatically lead to a hangover is beyond me. One of the reasons I hate football, it’s just an excuse for anti social behaviour in some quarters
Agreed

now that's being dedicated Grin

I don't think I'd manage to wake my kids up for that, even if I wanted to!

Lipsandlashes · 08/07/2021 10:07

Ah...smug alert...that's why I love that I don't work Mondays and Fridays. Still have to get up for the school run though - it's going to be great fun getting DDs up for that!

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 08/07/2021 10:10

I'm in Wales. We're teaming up with Scotland and NI to mount an invasion of England and coup first thing Monday morning. But I'm not supposed to mention that. Wink

Agree with this.
And it's not seen as a matter of national interest when it's women's football, is it?

I think we might as well all surrender now Grin

I think there will be a lot off, and a lot too tired to do anything but after the year and a half they've had I'm happy for them!
wendz86 · 08/07/2021 10:15

We have been told we can have a lie in and start late unless we have client meetings.

CanICelebrate · 08/07/2021 10:16

I think it’s really shitty putting your dc to bed on time and making them miss the match if they want to watch it.
It could be such a historic night for football fans and what a shame if a football mad child has to miss it.
Obviously different if your children don’t care!

Ugzbugz · 08/07/2021 10:16

I'm not taking annual leave as I like being paid to be hungover. I'm WFH so can blag it and have a lunchtime nap if needed.

ifonly4 · 08/07/2021 10:17

Surely most of us can have a nice time alongside 2-3 drinks and the match, and not suffer from a hangover.

We went out last night and watched the match. DH had had a pint in the afternoon, so we shared a bottle of wine between us early on, then went onto have a meal and chose to have water. Our two friends who we were with chose to have soft drinks alongside meal. We got up this morning at 6pm, so I could take him to work (I need car later) and will both be working.

Canigooutyet · 08/07/2021 10:18

What time do people normally go to bed if the match is going to wipe them out the next day?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/07/2021 10:19

My kids wont nap in the afternoon as they arent tired enough to sleep at that point. They are usually asleep by 8pm, so a 10pm (or later if extra time and penalties) will mean they are shattered on Monday.

But they will catch up across the rest of the week.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 10:22

Depends what work you are doing really, but people crying off for an office job where you sit down all day are a bit pathetic really. You can celebrate without drinking yourself silly or staying up all night, feel a bit tired, but it's just one day to get through then you can go to bed at normal time! Loads of people are still working from home anyway so it won't be an issue in a lot of workplaces.

I was 13 in 1966, I remember we won, I remember we played West Germany, I remember it went to extra time and then penalties.

I honestly can't remember if I watched it on the night or just saw bits later. He'll probably be the same so I wouldn't worry.

AntiSocialDistancer · 08/07/2021 10:24

@MordredsOrrery

Our primary school has let the children arrive an hour late this morning - I suspect the thinking was it's better than dealing with a load of grumpy, tired kids! With another 8pm kick-off I'm expecting the same on Monday.
That's a great idea.
igelkott2021 · 08/07/2021 10:25

@TiredButDancing

I don't really understand why the game is so late on Sunday. Is it TV rights? But even so, one assumes that the people most invested are in EUROPE so a slightly earlier kick off would work? DS dragged himself off to school this morning and I suspect the teachers are already dealing with tired children from last night. But even without children wanting to watch, it just makes no sense to me.
I totally agree about the kick off time, it seems ridiculous, especially on a Sunday. I'd have thought 5pm (and 6pm in most of the rest of Europe) would be fine. Finishing a game at close to midnight (or 11 in the UK) if it goes to penalties is barmy.
