Bun fight for Monday off work

229 replies

Upamountain43 · 08/07/2021 08:14

I wonder how many people are grovelling at their boss right now to get Monday off work. Just in case of the need for hangover recovery time.

Calling in a sickie is not going to work on Monday - unless your boss beats you to it and calls in first of course.

@TheCrowening

I have a busy day Monday. I’ll be tired no doubt, but that’ll be because of the drunkards going past my window late at night shouting.
Exactly what we experienced in, I think, 1982 when Italy won the WOrld Cup, we had dozens of cars driving round our town in Germany all night, horns blowing, flags waving, bottles being disposed of. I would imagine the same scenes in every other winning country but they're allowed to because they're not England, are they? Even the Scots were on the streets apparently 'celebrating' their bore-draw against England!
BashfulClam · 09/07/2021 22:45

@JudgeJ as a scot I saw no partying on residential streets. Can you provide a source for your Wee jibe there?

FangsForTheMemory · 09/07/2021 22:57

It’s not snobbery to think you don’t have to get bladdered in order to celebrate. FFS!

Pinuporc · 09/07/2021 23:11

Remember this is MN amd some people will be a bit tipsy and feel light headed if they consume more than their annual thimble-ful of sherry at NY only if DH abstained from drinking though

In RL lots of people may have more alcoholic beverages than they might normally have on a sunday (not least because pubs are open later) to celebrate or commiserate the result. It might not be your thing, but it's not hard to imagine that after a year and a half of almost no weddings, parties, sports events etc ,lots of people are going to use it as an excuse to party.

My DC school are keeping registers open until 10am.

Sirecho · 09/07/2021 23:30

@TiredButDancing

I don't really understand why the game is so late on Sunday. Is it TV rights? But even so, one assumes that the people most invested are in EUROPE so a slightly earlier kick off would work? DS dragged himself off to school this morning and I suspect the teachers are already dealing with tired children from last night. But even without children wanting to watch, it just makes no sense to me.
From the UK side of things , Sunday is Wimbledon Men's Final, so BBC wouldn't want to risk not showing it live if the Wimbledon final took too long.
Needapoodle · 10/07/2021 08:00

It's so weird how some people think they're better than others for not liking football. As if wanting to watch England play in the finals is some sort of moral failing. So strange. Seen it constantly on Mumsnet over the last few weeks.

OneStepOut · 10/07/2021 08:16

I'm not particularly worried about children being tired at school on Monday. I'm worried about their hangover parents trying to drive them to school and then to work. I know it's a small group that would behave like this but my local hospital is already shuffling between black and red alert. I wouldn't want to see much added to it.
I hope PM will announce a Bank Holiday.

Ive noticed the same. I fail many of MN standards though, so I think I can live with it. Grin

mumda · 10/07/2021 09:34

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Do you think Primary Teachers will expect any sense out of the kids on Monday?
Friend's school is letting the kids come in at half ten. Teachers as normal though!

Can't you understand that some of us have absolutely ZERO interest in football and couldn't care less whether England win or lose? I think it's madness to suggest that Monday should be a Bank Holiday and that children should be allowed to go to school late.
Pinuporc · 10/07/2021 10:19

Lots of people dont give a monkeys about the royal family but I think we got an extra bank holiday for Kate and William's wedding? (FWIW I dont especially think we should have a extra bank holiday for football)
The tone of the thread just seems quite snooty about people who want to watch (or keep their children up to watch) the final. No one is forcing anyone else to watch it and I think most schools are keeping registers open rather than opening later, so if you need your child to go in at regular time they can.

Palaver1 · 10/07/2021 10:32

Can't understand why this is such a big deal most business can't give a day off.
Schools will open as usual and should so will hospitals blah blah .
Having a few drinks should not have any negative effects on one's normal routine people should get to know there limit.
The assumption that one cannot enjoy a game without getting smashed really irritates me

I expect our work place to be filled with great hilarious discussions about the match .
I already have a feeling about the ones that will pull a sickie thereby giving others extra responsibilities.
That cup is coming home .
The cleaning up after the event is a massive task.
Well done to all the essential services that will be supporting .

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 10/07/2021 10:39

Who will be looking after my kids if it’s Bank holiday Monday?

Lots of us still have to work, us nhs workers for instance. We don’t all have office jobs. Hmm

Thecathouse · 10/07/2021 10:58

Meh don't give a crap about football or who wins to be honest

It is bank holiday here on Monday here anyway - it's July 12th

Needapoodle · 10/07/2021 10:59

If course i can understand that. Im not stupid. It sounds like you're the one who doesn't understand that people may want to keep their kids up late to watch the football. I'm talking about people who refer to others who do like football, or the smug poster upthread who seems to think her child is extra special because he doesn't want to watch it, like he's somehow better than the other kids.

I don't like football much either. But isn't it nice to see other people happy?

Needapoodle · 10/07/2021 11:00

If you want the perks that come with working in an office, get an office job.

Leaving people without childcare so they can't work with a few hours notice isn't reasonable. It is nothing to do with perks but being realistic.

It's too late though, how do people prepare now? If it is a bank holiday schools will close so how do hospitals/care homes/police and many other services cope if suddenly parents can't come into work?

Don’t be ridiculous, leaving people without childcare last minute is not realistic. Or, don’t moan when all services are running on skeleton staff because of a football match. Hmm
lioncitygirl · 10/07/2021 13:05

My two are staying up - they’re off school already. :-)

Needapoodle · 10/07/2021 14:34

For the hard of reading among us, my post above was in response to someone who said they won't have childcare if it's a bank holiday, and not everyone gets bank holidays off.

If you want bank holidays off then you're free to get a job in an office.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/07/2021 14:45

There’s no way Johnson will make Monday a BH if we win. He’ll make 19th July, so called “freedom day” a BH

BatshitCrazyWoman · 10/07/2021 15:27

@IntermittentParps

One of the reasons I hate football, it’s just an excuse for anti social behaviour in some quarters Agree with this. And it's not seen as a matter of national interest when it's women's football, is it?
Agreed.
Macaroni46 · 10/07/2021 16:02

Maybe we should close the schools for a half day on Monday??
Honestly, it's ridiculous. Just everyone go to work as normal! So many jobs won't have the privilege of starting late anyway eg nurses, police, teachers, shop workers etc

Gilly12345 · 10/07/2021 17:10

Why get pissed to watch football?

Why the obsession with getting pissed?
