Bun fight for Monday off work

Upamountain43 · 08/07/2021 08:14

I wonder how many people are grovelling at their boss right now to get Monday off work. Just in case of the need for hangover recovery time.

Calling in a sickie is not going to work on Monday - unless your boss beats you to it and calls in first of course.

It'll be finished by about 10.30 even if there is extra time, it's not exactly the middle of the night, most primary school aged children can cope with a one-off late night for something like this. Most people where I work will be watching but no one has suggested late starts or days off on Monday. I'm a huge football fan but will still be up and out the door for work the next day at the usual time.

Jeez I’m Irish and even we recognise it as a major sporting event and are organising bookings
for pubs and time off work on Monday. I’ve told Italians I manage they can start a bit later on Monday so long as they work the time back. Don’t manage any English but same would apply if I did.

@BarbaraofSeville it's not unheard of for Barcelona matches to start at 11pm!!!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/07/2021 13:03

@Yellowcrockpot

It never occurred to me j should keep DC (7) up for the match? His dad loves football but when i asked DC if he wanted to watch a game a few weeks ago, he couldn't have been less interested? Am I missing something here? Should I be keeping DC up for the football?!
@Yellowcrockpot

absolutely keep them up!
whether they win or lose i's history in the making.

But they will win.
IT'S COMING HOME !🦁🦁🦁❤⚽️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Erm, that used to be the case, sure, but did you miss all the fuss about the Lionesses during the last women's World Cup?
No.
But it didn't involve assumptions of a massive national hangover.

HOkieCOkie · 08/07/2021 14:46

Sadly I’m A nanny so it’ll be off to work for me, however I am staying at a friends who lives closer to work then I do so won’t have to be up as early.

SofiaMichelle · 08/07/2021 14:47

@IntermittentParps

The women's game has a fraction of the followers, hence the lower level of interest in international games and therefore the less coverage in the media and the less interest by government and Royals, etc. Well that's arse-backwards, isn't it? Why does it have a fraction of the followers? Is what the government should be thinking, and how to change that.
The government should be thinking why it has a fraction of the followers?

Which government?

This a global thing, nothing to do with the fuckwits in Westminster.

Somuddled · 08/07/2021 14:53

So strange! Surely most normal adults would just not drink an amount that would give them a hangover? If your properly drunk your not going to enjoy the match much as your responses will be slowed and make it harder to follow! Weirdos.

IntermittentParps · 08/07/2021 14:59

SofiaMichelle, I was quoting the pp who said it attracts 'less interest by government'.

And government do have a role in promoting and developing sport, of course they do.

Crossed wires I think: it was me who was talking about the interest from the government in this particular Euros because they've jumped on the bandwagon of its popularity - see massive viewing figures for last night etc.

My talking about government in this particular context was around women's football having a much smaller spectator following globally which no single government is going to change easily.

But yes, I absolutely agree that government should push sports participation and in particular for girls and women because far too many girls abandon sports participation at the first chance.

The USA seems to be doing pretty well with the popularity of women's college 'soccer' (grrr) though, which is brilliant to see.

Well, all single governments need to engage in it, don't they, or it won't change.

robbooftheford · 08/07/2021 19:37

Womens football is crap, that's why nobody watches it!

IntermittentParps · 09/07/2021 09:00

Great comment, thanks for that.

FreddieMercurysCat · 09/07/2021 17:45

My son’s primary is giving all children the opportunity to start later. I will be at work on Monday as usual, but we were bought pizza and sides by our MD today as a pre Monday treat.

FanfictionFan · 09/07/2021 17:51

Tbf, I'm not a footy fan, nor do I care if England win or lose but I've said to my youngest who's 14 that if England win he can have Monday off.

If they win he might want to celebrate with his mates at school anyway

LST · 09/07/2021 17:55

My work place has given everyone Monday off!!

BashfulClam · 09/07/2021 18:03

It’s not so much how much people will drink whilst the game is on.

It’s that if England actually win, people will be majorly celebrating because we haven’t won an international final since 1966 (we haven’t even got to a major international final since then)

Hushhush89 · 09/07/2021 18:05

I've actually heard that a secondary school in my area are letting kids go in later Monday morning because football is on Sunday night... like seriously wtf this about...

My primary school is letting them have until 10am off. Young kids will be knackered if there is extra time and penalties so it makes loads of sense to me
Mirw · 09/07/2021 18:09

Why does anyone need Monday off? Italy will win and England fans can go to work on Monday just like everyone else. Get over yourselves...

I'll tell my employer thanks but no thanks then shall I? 🙄
