To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

OP posts:
Blinkingbatshit · 08/07/2021 08:20

I’m totally with you on the booing of other teams’ national anthems - it is utterly disgraceful. If we didn’t look like a nation of louts before (possible but doubtful🙈) then we certainly do now☹️.

HumunaHey · 08/07/2021 08:20

@emilyfrost

I’d love to move elsewhere, but I don't think I need to list all the reasons why this isn't an option do I?

Then if you can’t/won’t leave, cheer up. Don’t be miserable. Find happiness and joy instead of complaining and whinging because it’s a vicious cycle.

You make your own happiness in life and right now you’re choosing to be sad because we won a football game.

Scrolled through all the comments to see if Emily had responded to why she is proud of our government but nothing yet.

Also, the second comment is pretty dim too. "Don't be miserable". . .🙄.

Not saying OP is depressed but telling someone who is feeling low to not be miserable is the most useless comment to make.

ConstanceGracy · 08/07/2021 08:21

Booing has been going on by other countries too if you’d watched their matches .don’t just blame England fans!

HumunaHey · 08/07/2021 08:21

@YouJustFoldItIn

I'm not surprised your MH is delicate OP. Relentlessly negative, bitter and pessimistic people tend to live shorter, sadder, lonelier lives.
Yes, and your comment will make OP feel tonnes better. Bravo!
beigebrownblue · 08/07/2021 08:22

@YellowandGreenToBeSeen

I agree with you OP.

I’m glad they won as the played the best game but I hate how this government - of whom I could not be less proud - will misappropriate the win as their ‘will’ or doing (all whilst ignoring the rising Covid cases and blaming the wider population for acting irresponsibly).

This.

And it is beyond unfortunate that it is seemingly not acceptable to some to voice different opinions.

Just heard the news on the radio.

The second sentence was 'mens gatherings around football have contributed to the rise in covid cases'. They also clearly and accurately described it as men's football, which it is.

We are on mumsnet after all. Which on some level is supposed to analyse the interests and concerns of mums. What it says on the tin.

Plenty of people (and women) don't go out at all on a football night as they know after the match there will be men getting pissed, shouting, intimidating behaviour and possibly violence in the streets. So how is that 'freedom'? It also currently puts the staff in hospitality industry at risk.

Nothing to do with being 'depressed'. I'm sure that most of us 'mums' would appreciate more time off, less worry about finances, less worry about our kids getting ill if they are clinically vulnerable. A day out. Time off in general. Better working conditions. Not having to struggle with job insecurity, zero hours contracts. Being able to get a dentist apppointment if you have tooth ache.(two year backlog in some places if you can get a dentist on the NHS at all)

Football is not supposed to facilitate nationalism, division and hate. (the booing at other national anthems). It's a sport, lovely thing to do on a Sunday morning, outdoors across the country, lovely thing to do for young people, especially after all they've been through. Not my bag personally but nothing wrong with that.

But not as a distraction for all the suffering and frankly evil that is being perpetrated by this government at the moment in terms of deliberately increasing poverty and making peoples lives more difficult.

And as far as leaving the country is concerned...freedom of movement even without covid has been made more difficult by this government. Not so easy anymore to travel in Europe and find a job there, (which I did when I was younger and which I greatly regret for this generation of young people is no longer possible in the way that it was). That's just sad.

Europe came together not just for people to merge economies but also because trade, cultural exchange and friendship was a really good way to rebuild stability after the war. And yes, history is important.

This government is so saturated with sleaze it will burn itself out eventually. I'm hoping sooner rather than later.

They seem to believe that everyone is selfish, self-centred...
almost as if they want to reduce humanity to it's lowest common denominator.

Praying they will destroy themselves sooner rather than later.

Marianicka · 08/07/2021 08:23

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

Lol! What an ignorant post. I might not be living here if I hadn't just had the right to live and work in 27 other countries removed. So literally, somebody IS making me live on this godforsaken island.
ancientgran · 08/07/2021 08:24

@BrownEyedGirl80

Focus on the uniting of the country.its been a shit 18 months and everyone felt joy at last night's win.Hopefully we'll win again on Sunday.
That's what annoys me, "Everyone felt joy at last night's win." No they didn't. I couldn't care less personally, I recognise it's nice for the team who seem decent young men and for people who enjoy football but no not everyone felt joy.

I'm a carer for my disabled husband, I broke my ankle on Tuesday and I don't know how we are going to cope in the coming weeks. I had some joy this morning when the kind Sainsburys delivery driver unpacked my shopping from their trays into some bags for me and had a sympathetic chat. I take joy where I can.

I'm worried about covid spreading at these events, at the risk of mutations and the risk to my very vulnerable husband. I've had a lonely miserable time keeping him safe and now I feel helpless and worried and not very joyful.

I hate being included in statements like that, please recognise that we are entitled to our own feelings.

Subbaxeo · 08/07/2021 08:25

I’ve been watching England for 30 years. I love this England team. They didn’t go defeatist when losing, they showed perseverance and grit, they don’t give the appearance of cliqueyness (I’m looking at you, ex Liverpool and Man U players) and I love the ttk as an anti racist gesture and the way they stick it to the haters. I have the view that they are holding a mirror up to our government and showing it for what it is. Can’t wait for Sunday!

Faultymain5 · 08/07/2021 08:26

@Member589500

Wow. Page 1. ‘Can’t quite articulate why it’s not great that England, who we all should obviously hate, might be feeling happy’. Page 5. ‘Colonialism, Grenfell, Windrush, Brexit, Boris, racism‘. FFS. Do you collect misery and store it all up to make sure everything fits your world view? When something good happens do you whip out your list and make sure to tell yourself and everyone around you that it’s NOT good because….’ I’d hate to be you.
When you quote from page 5 did you notice where it actually said I’m grateful to be in England. Or does that not suit your “don’t be negative, cause er football” narrative?

Are we not allowed to see the good and the bad the day after a 55 year drought comes to an end?

I guess if you only believe talent will only come around every 50 years you’ve got to make the most of it.

HarrietPierce · 08/07/2021 08:26

"If anyone is genuinely proud of Mr Johnson's record I would question their mental health."

Or rather their moral compass.

M0nkeybars · 08/07/2021 08:27

I agree with you OP - the team themselves seem like a great bunch of lads, with a brilliant manager and supportive of other teams. Supportive of anti-racism and anti-homophobia initiative and generally just showing kindness and good sportsmanship. Really let down by fans booing the opponent's national anthem. Surely no matter how happy you are that your team won, you can't condone that? Unfortunately England fans have a reputation for hooliganism and this behaviour doesn't help. Absolutely disgraceful.

I'm not English and happy for the England team and their success but the behaviour of some fans really let the side down.

And for those saying it happened between other nations, I watched almost all matches and didn't hear it once apart from in England matches. Happy to be corrected if anyone can think of examples?

And yes this govt and brexit are totally shit and both thrive on xenophobia so not surprising 🤷‍♀️

ancientgran · 08/07/2021 08:27

@ConstanceGracy

If you are English then surely the behaviour of England fans reflect on us, I would like England to be a good example not just accept the lowest common denominator.
Ilovegreentomatoes · 08/07/2021 08:28

Come on England!!Football

Funny because the negative and bitter person sounds like you and not the OP.
Ypsilanti · 08/07/2021 08:28

Totally agree with you OP. The grotesque nationalistic tub-thumping, quasi- jingoistic superiority this brings out just makes me sick. All this football’s coming home stuff smacks of the kind of colonial superiority we need less of, not more (I do recognise the England team is much more representative of modern Britain and are good role models themselves). Plus I abhor how this corrupt and criminally irresponsible government jump upon the opportunity to politicise sport and associate the team’s success with Brexit and their abhorrent policies.

So, yeah, I wish England hadn’t won. We are not a great nation, if we are judged by our leadership.

Babdoc · 08/07/2021 08:29

Marianicka, how do you think Brits emigrate to Australia, NZ, etc? Nobody is imprisoning you in the UK, and you can still apply for jobs anywhere you want.
Personally I’m still hoarse from cheering the England result. I’m old enough to remember watching the ‘66 World Cup final, and it’s been a long wait for this!
OP, don’t rain on England’s parade - the whole country needs this joy after the vile year we’ve just suffered.

lynsey91 · 08/07/2021 08:29

England supporters are not the only ones that boo other countries' national anthems.

I can't stand Boris or the government and am also not a fan of football but I am happy that we won. Lots of my family are football fans and I am happy for them

Hooplabum · 08/07/2021 08:29

Some people get their joy out of being miseries and moaners. Are you one of them?
Everything doesn’t have to be taken so seriously!! Remember the advice that when you can’t change the situation, the one thing you can change is your attitude to it. Stop moaning and look at the good bits of life.
Or sit back and enjoy the football and county’s success or ring the Jeremy Vine Show and tut and cluck to him about how awful it all is……. 😄

Ypsilanti · 08/07/2021 08:30

And before someone tells me to leave if I don’t like it. Well I would, if my right to do so hadn’t been taken away from me.

CarpeVitam · 08/07/2021 08:30

Oh do bore off dear! 🙄Biscuit

At least others will still feel good and this view a minority

I’m all for a bit of cheer to be honest. I do hope they win on Sunday ⚽️ 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

How about people with health conditions that mean places like Australia, NZ etc won't accept them? I suppose that's their own fault.
