To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

OP posts:

Cheating bastards as well. Winning from a blatant dive.

Shameless.

Ypsilanti · 08/07/2021 08:32

@MarshaBradyo I’m not depressed. Just frequently ashamed to be British (/English). There are many good things about this country and it’s citizens. but generally speaking football does not bring out the best in us.

Cam2020 · 08/07/2021 08:33

Get a grip. Honestly, you'd thinking Boris Johnson is Dr Mengle the way people go on.

wanttomarryamillionaire · 08/07/2021 08:33

Seriously! Have a day off OP! People like you who "hate" their own country are part of the reason brexit and the tory government happened! Ordinary British people got so so sick of being told how shit we are and how shit our country is that they started to fight back. Brexit was the voice for millions and it was provided on a plate by the conservative government. If you hate it so much then move abroad, its not that hard to move to the EU even after brexit. After the last year or so the English team are providing a much needed boost to many many people!

lifehappened · 08/07/2021 08:33

I really thought this happening would cheer everyone up. It certainly has me but some are born to be miserable! I don't understand how you can't be happy after that game. Keep your thoughts to yourself and stop trying to bring us all down

flashbac · 08/07/2021 08:33

I agree with you OP. It's nice that England won but seeing people like Priti Patel and Boris trying to get in on the action (so fake btw) and dimwit people concluding it's because of Brexit is a bit sickening tbh. We can't have nice things or be patriotic because sickening jingoistic attitudes soon take over the narrative.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/07/2021 08:33

Boris and his government are shite.

I hate football, but watched it last night. I think it’s great that England are doing well.

We need something good to happen like this to heal the bitter divisions in the country over the last few years.

LemonRoses · 08/07/2021 08:34

@Muddydoor

Oh for friggin hell’s sake. We’ve had a really crap year and a half, we’re used to getting our hopes up and losing. So what if the government tries to hijack the joy? We’ve all been here and watched how they haven’t led the country through the pandemic. When a decent opposition comes along, they’ll be out on their arses.
So naieve.

Why does it matter? Look to the 1936 Olympics.

Will they be out? Highly unlikely.

They control the media. They use popularism. They quieten dissenting voices. They have a disdain for human rights. Corporate power is protected. They promote a disdain of intellectuals and are a tad obsessed with crime and punishment yet allow and accept fraudulent referendum results and prove cronyism and corruption.

That is why it is important not to allow Johnson et al to hijack a game and turn it into anything more.

The changes to electoral boundaries, coupled with a split centre left make a Tory defeat very hard.

Il Aus / British dual and there’s one thing I notice most is this difference I find this sense of shame you talk about so misplaced

Rudeppl · 08/07/2021 08:34

Oh give over. Get a life misery guts

Ypsilanti · 08/07/2021 08:35

@LemonRoses Spot on, unfortunately

monkeyallen44 · 08/07/2021 08:37

You can be happy and proud of the football without being proud of the government. They are two different things.

One of the worst things I've seen in the tournament is the sheer contempt for the poor German girl who had some money raised for her. So many middle aged, red faced men up in arms about it while failing to acknowledge how disgusting the online abuse she received was. That speaks volumes.

But you will always get dickheads in any scenario. Just embrace the positives.

AChickenCalledDaal · 08/07/2021 08:39

@ancientgran I hear you. Really not feeling the joy here, when I see drunken shouty people endangering others' lives, while all the things I genuinely derive joy from are still banned, restricted and regarded as dangerous. Not feeling the joy when my poor sick father is too deranged to understand that the football is even happening, largely as a result of having had the misfortune to be in hospital at the peak of the second wave, where the over-stretched health service was unable to meet his needs and triggered a massive mental decline.

The things that bring me joy are nothing to do with football. I'm happy for those that are happy. I'm not happy about being kept awake by shouting, incoherent drunks in the middle of the night. And the jingoism scares me.

IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 08:39

I might not be living here if I hadn't just had the right to live and work in 27 other countries removed. So literally, somebody IS making me live on this godforsaken island.

I think you need to check the meaning of the word 'literally'.

"I think that the team desreved to win and agree with PP that they are a group of inspirational young men, but how sad to see the pics of that Danish goalie cconcentrating on the penalty kick with a laser pen alll over his face presumably from an enland 'fan'."

The young men in the team are great. Some of the English fans leave a lot to be desired.

This! A lot of the England team wouldnt be here if the likes of Patel had been in power when their parents/grandparents came here and it grinds my gears to see her and Johnson pretending to give a shit

Ooodles of time for Gareth Southgate & the team but no time at all for the tinpot nationalists who somehow think our football team performing well is due to brexit. I believe the argument goes that it has incentivised the team to show the EU that we’re still too nation - or something 🤦🏻‍♀️

Marianicka · 08/07/2021 08:41

Could have written your post OP.

The football team are great role models and I'm thrilled for them and that they're being rewarded not just for great football but also a bit of kindness and humanity they're shown.

BUT football shouldn't be about politics and I hate how it's become a culture war and appropriated by ignorant people (including our dishonest leaders). English exceptionalism makes me sick to my core at the moment and I fear the win will just feed that for much of the population. It's revolting.

All those who are saying "if you don't like it just leave" - well I can't now, can I, thanks to bloody Brexit? But for the first time in my life, the idea of leaving this country is very appealing. If the Tories are still in power pedalling their division in a three years when my kids are off my hands and at uni, I will seriously consider a move to Scotland or Wales, if we can make the stars align in our favour. At least there, there is some opposition to the Tory party.

sadperson16 · 08/07/2021 08:41

I’m proud of this government

In what way?

MarshaBradyo · 08/07/2021 08:41

With this level of positivity somehow I reckon you still would be. You need some positive oomf to move countries and I’m guessing it lacks somewhat.

HildegardeCrowe · 08/07/2021 08:42

I tend to agree OP and I love international football. There’s nothing like an exciting tournament to lift the spirits. How patronising to suggest that the OP might be depressed.

However the booing during other teams’ national anthems also makes me ashamed to be British, not to mention the jingoistic press.

Terhou · 08/07/2021 08:43

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

How can anyone be proud of a government that is riddled with corruption and has presided over so many avoidable deaths?
sadperson16 · 08/07/2021 08:43

I think you need to check the meaning of the word 'literally'.

not really? Its pretty clear.

How is the poster 'literally' being 'made' to live in Britain?

Is someone 'literally' preventing her from getting on a plane?

Cheating bastards as well. Winning from a blatant dive.

Shameless.

I know just about nothing about football but I believe the ref or whoever watched the video and agreed a penalty should be given.

Do you know better than them?

Do you really think that there can't be people who don't care about football but enjoy lots of other things? What a narrow minded view.
