To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

OP posts:

@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman

FFS lighten up. I normally don't give a shit about football but a bit of national success makes a pleasant change.

I just don't get this attitude of 'the English are the worst and the nastiest nation ever'. It's been around for bloody decades and it's tedious and wearing. No nation is perfect. Let us enjoy ourselves once in a while without moaning about it.

Me either

It’s pretty much on here on a daily basis

So pleased we won hope we can do final

Beendownthisroadmorethantwice · 08/07/2021 08:03

What I hate is a game being used to political advantage, boosting corrupt Johnson’s standing with those too dim to see that the football is very little to do with out government.

And yet the OP seems to think that football is related to government.

Heathofhares · 08/07/2021 08:04

What the OP is feeling is completely seperate from the great game that was played. I lile Gareth Southgate, I think his team are fantastic. But it is how their sucess is being jumped upon by people with their own agenda that is the problem.

IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 08:04

The football is only 'sullied' by the government because you've made it so in your head. In reality, the govt have nothing to do with it.

And would you really have cheered on England a few years ago? Somehow I doubt it. You sound a bit ABE to me. Which is your right I guess, but I think you're being disingenuous.

SoupDragon · 08/07/2021 08:05

Still not nice though is it.

It's also "not nice" that only English football fans get the blame for it.

YouJustFoldItIn · 08/07/2021 08:06

Every time I hear someone bleating like the OP it makes me want us to win this even more. I'm not a football fan but I am going to thoroughly enjoy seeing millions of people so happy for a little while and also thoroughly enjoy seeing all the spiteful, bitter England haters having to suck it up.

christinarossetti19 · 08/07/2021 08:06

What's ABE?

BrownEyedGirl80 · 08/07/2021 08:06

Focus on the uniting of the country.its been a shit 18 months and everyone felt joy at last night's win.Hopefully we'll win again on Sunday.

No, like me they suggest they dislike the popularist approach to government. Take the limited of thinking with you by donning a ridiculous fancy dress outfit over a shirt and tie and pretend to be a fan.

Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism.

It’s less about the football itself and more about how it is being hijacked.

southeastdweller · 08/07/2021 08:06

I agree, some of the England fans are ignorant yobs and always have been. The government is shite, people aren’t getting seen for their health issues, and we owe 2 trillion pounds which will need to be paid back with more tax and public service cuts. Still, England may win a football game on Sunday.

What a great time to be British Hmm

HomerSimpsonsDonut · 08/07/2021 08:07

You sound well and truly delightful OP Wink I'm not a football fan particularly but after a truly shit year it is wonderful that we have made it to a final!

pilates · 08/07/2021 08:09

Why create a negative out of a positive? Are you always such an attention seeker? How sad.

It is a momentous occasion - yes I get that it is "only football" but it's glorious that we have made it this far in the tournament, it is something for people to get excited about after a terrible year. Cheer up!
Janedownourlane · 08/07/2021 08:10

I think that the team desreved to win and agree with PP that they are a group of inspirational young men, but how sad to see the pics of that Danish goalie cconcentrating on the penalty kick with a laser pen alll over his face presumably from an enland 'fan'.

LittleNibbler · 08/07/2021 08:12

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

I hate this rhetoric. If you don’t like part of your homeland, just leave. What an idiotic thing to say. Wing mirror broken? Just get a new car. Think your garden is too small? Just move. Ingrowing toenail? Well if it’s uncomfortable you could just chop off your leg...for gods sakes you can love where you live and want to stay but still have concerns, reservations and issues without having to be told to move.

I couldn’t care less about football but I really
Hope England win as I think it will really cheer people up. The team seem like a really good bunch and I think it’s great to have this sporting achievement. I hope they win Sunday, although I will not be watching. It will be a big positive boost for many people.

OhDear2200 · 08/07/2021 08:12

Not read the thread. But I wanted to say about English fans…all the men/boys in my family are football fans (male heavy family!) and they are all really decent for people. Not racist not violent.

Like any ‘group’ of people they are not homogeneous.

Also I think we have a very blinkered view, the level of racism and violence
in football in other countries is much much worse compared to here.

OliviaWainright · 08/07/2021 08:12

I understand this. I am so very very proud of our team. I think they've been great role models for our kids, have played brilliantly and totally deserve to be in the final.

BUT, our government will be jumping on it and basically claiming the victory as theirs. and I can see it all adding to the division in this country. As seen on this thread, the whole "love the country / government or leave it" mind set will flourish.

OhDear2200 · 08/07/2021 08:14

But I don’t think this is just an English thing. Surely you could say the same for Italy if they win?
Faultymain5 · 08/07/2021 08:14
@Faultymain5 you are weird. I am very happy to be mixed race, thank you very much.
Who said you shouldn’t be happy you are mixed raced? Weird for you to decide that was said to you when it wasn’t.

What’s weirder is telling someone to leave a country cause they have issues with the one they live in. In fact that’s not weird at all, it’s what the racists historically did and still do.

HumunaHey · 08/07/2021 08:14

@YouJustFoldItIn

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it.

And then you go on to list all the reasons why, which basically boil down to not getting your own way in the referendum and not getting your own way in the general election either.

You are still so bitterly sanctimonious about that, that you'd rather see your own country lose in a football tournament as some sort of punishment for Brexit and to bring us down a peg, at a time when

a) they are at their best and deserve to win and

b) the country desperately needs a boost and a reason for us to all be on the same side for once.

Well aren't you a mean spirited and vengeful delight? Jesus. The saddest thing is that I know there are loads of people who will be agreeing with you.

I disagree that the team are at the best. Raheem Sterling has pretty much carried them to this stage. It was like Neymar at the World cup that time.
OhDear2200 · 08/07/2021 08:14

Oh just to say though I totally agree with the anger at Boris! He can fuck of riding on this.

There is so much sourness and bitterness

Must be tiring to loathe good stuff

Don’t get it

And loads of supporters on here not everyone is a typical football fan even

Muddydoor · 08/07/2021 08:16

Oh for friggin hell’s sake. We’ve had a really crap year and a half, we’re used to getting our hopes up and losing. So what if the government tries to hijack the joy? We’ve all been here and watched how they haven’t led the country through the pandemic. When a decent opposition comes along, they’ll be out on their arses.

IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 08:18

Anyone But England.
YouJustFoldItIn · 08/07/2021 08:19

I'm not surprised your MH is delicate OP. Relentlessly negative, bitter and pessimistic people tend to live shorter, sadder, lonelier lives.
