To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

Wow. Page 1. ‘Can’t quite articulate why it’s not great that England, who we all should obviously hate, might be feeling happy’. Page 5. ‘Colonialism, Grenfell, Windrush, Brexit, Boris, racism‘. FFS. Do you collect misery and store it all up to make sure everything fits your world view? When something good happens do you whip out your list and make sure to tell yourself and everyone around you that it’s NOT good because….’ I’d hate to be you.
People like the OP TRY to suck the life and soul out of others. It must be an awful existence @littlegreybird to moan all the time, look for the negatives when people are enjoying themselves and attempt to go around spreading misery - I pity you.
LostThings · 08/07/2021 07:50

I'm sorry you're feeling low OP. I don't like football that much - I only watch when England play - but I am so glad that this tournament is making people happy, especially children who have missed out on a lot of fun and excitement over the last 16 months.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 08/07/2021 07:50

It's flipping football. It was a highly entertaining and nailbiting game with some exquisite playing and a couple of unconventional goals. If you can't separate a bit of fun and some players at the top of their game and people finally having a joyful excuse to enjoy themselves, let off steam and get together apart from politics and Brexit and government and 'populism' and God knows what else you've entangled it with, that's on you and your miserableness!

BastardMonkfish · 08/07/2021 07:51

I live in NI OP but I think like many others on this thread the team seem like a nice bunch, try to separate it from politics and covid because those awful things are happening anyway. Lots of ordinary decent people will get a little lift from England winning and god knows after the year we have all had take whatever bit of happiness you can get when you can get it.

travellinglighter · 08/07/2021 07:52

@SimonJT

Its fairly standard to boo the opposing teams national anthem, it isn’t something that just England fans do, nor is it football specific.
Really? Doesn’t happen with the other home nations and never happens in rugby.
Waxonwaxoff0 · 08/07/2021 07:53

@BountyIsUnderrated

Denmark booed Wales national anthem so they aren't exactly innocent. Since their player had an incident they've been given half the games. Although I agree the coverage of English football is insane, its pretty much on every media outlet. You wouldn't see it for any other british nation hence the attitude towards English fans, it comes across as arrogant.
The other British nations don't tend to do very well in football though to be honest. England has the best chance so more coverage.
CoralSparkles · 08/07/2021 07:54

@Faultymain5 you are weird. I am very happy to be mixed race, thank you very much.

Whoarethewho · 08/07/2021 07:54

Stop being so miserable it's coming home!

MoiraNotRuby · 08/07/2021 07:54

I get where you are coming from. I am part of the vaccination programme and hate Johnson and co taking any credit for it. I do it despite the useless selfish government, not for them! I imagine the football players are similar.

Dillydollydingdong · 08/07/2021 07:57

emilyfrost well said. I didn't watch because I can't take the stress, but thrilled England won. And Raheem Stirling was apparently magnificent so well done him

Rosegoldfan · 08/07/2021 07:57

I have always hated this being British. Why do we not get behind our country in everything. Olympics, Male or female football even chess. It just seems to be so uncool here to be proud. Only football seems to be the only thing.

It was uncool to even support my own school as a kid. Americans I sometimes find cringe but at least they get behind themselves.

Sansaplans · 08/07/2021 07:58

How miserable, I can understand discontent with the government and finding it annoying they are leaping onto it, but it's fantastic news. For every loud, obnoxious and beer swilling football lout there is someone sat at home watching it with their family and a takeaway, a child who loves playing football watching in awe, someone who isn't overly arsed getting swept up in the excitement.

DeadButDelicious · 08/07/2021 07:58

I find it very hard to get worked up about football either way. We won, that's nice, I'm not gonna watch it but you crack on.

What is beginning to annoy me is and this may just be an issue local to myself but under every article giving COVID 19 information, case rates or just urging caution on my local papers online pages is people bellowing ITS COMING HOME!!!1 followed by a tonne of England flags. It is not filling me with confidence shall we say. Pretty sure COVID doesn't give a shit about the footie lads.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 08/07/2021 07:59

FFS lighten up. I normally don't give a shit about football but a bit of national success makes a pleasant change.

I just don't get this attitude of 'the English are the worst and the nastiest nation ever'. It's been around for bloody decades and it's tedious and wearing. No nation is perfect. Let us enjoy ourselves once in a while without moaning about it.

Sansaplans · 08/07/2021 07:59

my 12 year old actually had to endure this awful song at full bore yesterday morning first thing and then again before school finished as her tutor put it on for them to sing along to !! lol needless to say it was only the boys singing and one of the girls tried to turn it off lol , dd said she had a headache when i collected her ,i felt great sympathy , so would i have had enduring that racket

How horrific for her, didn't they get the memo that only boys like football?

TheTallOakTrees · 08/07/2021 07:59

@Willwebebuyingnumber11

Some people lead very sheltered dull lives if their “hearts sunk” at a football match being won 😂😂😂😂 honestly some people need help. My DD came home yesterday complete with face paint and a flag she’d made after PE, in very high spirits. All the children in the school came running out happy and elated after a football themed day. God forbid anything should make our children this happy again after a miserable 15 months. If you’re DC are miserable about it’s, that’s a reflection on the parents.

ITS COMING HOME ⚽️

The children at some schools are really getting in the fun aspect and it is lovely to see something positive after such a long 18 months. I bet your DD had a fantastic day and will remember it.

Other countries celebrate their sporting success, if we win anything football related which is extremely rarer the miseries come out with but colonist history, but Brexit, but this but that. Some people really are joy suckers.

GoldenLabbie · 08/07/2021 07:59

The booing of the anthems happens regardless of who’s playing. It’s pathetic and never happens in rugby, or any other sport come to think of it.

Whoarethewho · 08/07/2021 08:00

This thread is like Mumsnet woke bingo. Already seeing mentions of misogyny, racism and Brexit. Entirely predictable sad and embittered people just because it's coming home!

Roomonb · 08/07/2021 08:01

I think a minority of supporters are absolutely fucking awful. But I imagine most people are normal decent people. What football has to do with the government of the day or colonialism I don’t know. I’m an ethnic minority and my family are cheering on england. I’ve lived abroad and the idea that Britain or British people are uniquely awful is bollocks.

I think you need to separate how you feel about politics from football. And show me any world leader who wouldn’t be delighted about their country winning a football tournament. I understand you feel unhappy but projecting everything you feel about British politics onto any kind of achievement for British people is unhealthy.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 08/07/2021 08:01

Cheer up OP. At least they’re pissing off Laurence Fox.

Totally agree with all of the above. Never happier than when they are dragging the rest of us down with their endlessly negative, doom and gloom, self flagellating po-faced madness - it's like a disease.

Lalliella · 08/07/2021 08:01

I agree with you 100% OP. I am pleased for the players and the manager but for no-one else. I hate what this country has become. 2012 it was such a great place to be. It’s gone to absolute shit in less than a decade. Our futures are being dictated to by thick xenophobic gammons, and it’s tragic.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 08/07/2021 08:02

I completely disagree, Gareth Southgate and the team are wonderful role models. They have zero connection to this government. Of course Boris is going to jump on the band wagon any leader would but that’s not the teams fault.

Southgate has shown great leadership and I’m proud of the team.

Heathofhares · 08/07/2021 08:02

@SimonJT

Still not nice though is it. Football has always brought out the worst xenophbia in England, just as Brexit has in some quarters. Add them together and yes, I’m sickened too OP.
christinarossetti19 · 08/07/2021 08:02

littlegreybird I agree with everything you've said, especially the aggressive nationalism that football brings out in some and the sanctioning of a super-spreader event while children are being sent home to SI for days on end.
