To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

@CoralSparkles

If you hate England so much then why do you live here? Move to another country or stop whinging. People from other countries are proud of their country. Also, every country has done shameful things. England isn’t evilHmm
It’s sounds like you are proud of the UK. Tell me, what are you proud of (genuine question)? I get liking being British, but what is their to be proud of? Is it better than other first world countries? If so, how?

As for your if you don’t like it, emigrate! Not everyone can do that. Now that our options are limited by leaving the EU, we’d have to either work in a role needed in the new country or have a high amount of money available to invest there. DH and I would have had opportunities for emigration whilst we were still working in our careers, but now we are both retired and without £80,000+ to invest, we are stuck here and perfectly entitled to winge thank you!

Cardiffwales · 09/07/2021 19:46

I totally see you point. I love the football but the behaviour surrounding it is awful.

Would you like to explain that comment ? I’m sick of people apologising for being English, being white, being ‘privileged’. It doesn’t help any cause and it just encourages division and racism. We’re so busy analysing what we are and who we are, that we’ve forgotten that we’re all human. Put things in proportion. This is a football tournament. IT should be about the sport and nothing else.[/quote]
No Pam, what causes division is intolerance and ignorance.

Roussette · 09/07/2021 19:54

@pam290358
If that’s the way you feel why don’t you just fuck off and live somewhere else

Do you have any idea what you sound like? Who else do you say this to?

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 19:56

I’m neither intolerant nor ignorant but there is both on all sides. Using inflammatory language towards any group of people is not helpful. We should be working to come together, not push people further apart.

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 19:57

@Rousette. I really don’t care what I sound like and I speak my mind. Tired of people pulling this country down at every available opportunity. Sorry if my opinion offends, but I’m as entitled to it as anyone else.

NannyPlumsSnarkyWand · 09/07/2021 19:57

"Using inflammatory language towards any group of people is not helpful. "

Did I misread or did you not just tell people to fuck off if they disagreed with you?

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 20:00

No, I didn’t suggest that they could do that if they disagreed with me. I suggested that if they don’t like the country they are living in, instead of slagging it off at every opportunity they should stop being hypocrites and go and live somewhere else more to their liking.

Roussette · 09/07/2021 20:01

I really don’t care what I sound like and I speak my mind

Obviously

Telling people to fuck off out the country that is their home is inflammatory so not sure why you are decrying everyone else when you obviously need everyone to agree with you. Free speech, we can disagree with what this country is doing at the moment without being told to fuck off

NannyPlumsSnarkyWand · 09/07/2021 20:01

And Pam has illustrated beautifully why the OP feels so despairing. Thank you Pam.

Roussette · 09/07/2021 20:02

I suggested that if they don’t like the country they are living in, instead of slagging it off at every opportunity they should stop being hypocrites and go and live somewhere else more to their liking

So these people are not allowed to criticise what they feel is wrong with the country at the moment?

They have to just roll over and accept it or fuck off?

Not sure what is 'hypocritical' about having an opinion??

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 20:08

Not engaging with this any more. Should have known my words would be twisted into something not meant. There are a number of posts on this thread from people quite clearly ashamed to be English. I don’t apologise for what I said because it makes my blood boil. It may not be perfect but pulling it down and reinforcing a negative attitude does nothing to improve things does it ?

Roussette · 09/07/2021 20:11

Just explain what you did mean then?

I am not ashamed to be English. Not in a million years. Ashamed of this crackpot Government yes. But that's not being ashamed of being English.

I want better times when they're out of power.

And I'm not going anywhere lol

3scape · 09/07/2021 20:14

Me: Embarrassed to be in England because of shitty rude behaviour and expecting better behaviour and manners.
MN: well you can fuck off somewhere else then.

I must conclude England is happy with such a low bar then. Hmm

Bugbabe1970 · 09/07/2021 20:15

I'm Welsh so shouldn't give a shit bit think it's great and really lifted a lot of peoples spirits

SueSaid · 09/07/2021 20:21

@Roussette

Well... this has raised my blood pressure, I presume Boris is holding up his St George's Cross underpants.... that's what it looks like!
Love that picture of Boris Johnson!

It's great isn't it, like we've reclaimed England's flag for what it should be used for!! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Roussette · 09/07/2021 20:24

Yeah makes a change from the EDL, you're right!

Oh how nice after some of the bitter and snippy comments.

I'd support any home nation in the final.

Even if they lose they can hold their heads high knowing they’ve done brilliantly and brought a bit of hope in what has been a very difficult time for many. Southgate and the team are all so likeable imo.

I've got my flag displayed.. tastefully of course Grin.

Just being blindly "proud" of your country does nothing to improve it either does it?
pam290358 · 09/07/2021 20:34

@Roussette. None of my original comments were personally directed at you. As I said, there are a number of posts in this thread expressing shame at being English and a few comments basically saying the same thing as I have - although admittedly not as forcefully. We may have a ‘crackpot’ government but that doesn’t define us as a country - governments come and go. To say you’re ashamed to be English because of the actions of a few over exuberant football fans is ridiculous. After 18 months of lockdown are we not allowed to let our hair down and our soft out ? We have a lot to be proud of and all I’m saying is that instead of expressing shame at the shitty bits, we would be better looking for the positive. Anything wrong with that ? A bit of national pride after what has been a very difficult time, and which has affected us all.

FlyingBattie · 09/07/2021 20:36

It's quite hypocritical given that a large majority of people who use this to shout down "dissent" also say people coming here because it's more to their liking should go back to their own country, though.

Not saying you hold that opinion, but many of the "if you don't like it fuck off" people are the same ones telling other people to "fuck off to your own country"

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 20:37

@FlyingBattie. Not blindly proud of my country - far from it, and certainly not proud of the crappy government we have, but as I said governments come and go. So not ashamed to be English either.

I find it quite scary that winning a football match is sufficient to override appalling legislation, government corruption, creeping nationalism and polarisation of society.

I’m not miserable. I like life. I understand people enjoy football. I have no problem with celebrating a win.

I do have a problem with the ‘ Some lads have won a semi-final and Johnson put on a shirt, so we can forgive the excess deaths, the very poor behaviours, the lies and cronyism, the ministerial code breaches and sneaking through of quite concerning legislative changes.

Roussette · 09/07/2021 20:38

pam I think it's great they have got through, Gareth Southgate has got a firm hand on them and it shows. I have nothing against the team at all, well done them.

It's just the fans... really don't agree with the hijacking of a double decker bus with 23 arrested...plus other incidents, just enjoy the moment but behave!

I dread what it's going to be like if we win on Sunday, or even worse, if we lose... doesn't bear thinking about
