To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

@supperlover

Can't help feeling the London based media would not be nearly so excited if the Scots, Welsh or N.Irish were in the final. England is not necessarily supported by everyone in the UK. I agree that the players and manager are fantastic but a lot of the fans are appalling.
Given how rarely any of these teams even qualify for major tournaments, let alone reach the final stages, I reckon they'd be very excited. There was loads of interest when Wales qualified from the initial stages this year.
TheJade · 09/07/2021 18:43

I’m delighted by the result and I don’t think booing the opposition or their anthem is bad.

Have to say the laser pen in poor caspers face was so out of order though 😢

Chin up - you might get a bank hol or Leiu day 🤣

user1492450936 · 09/07/2021 18:44

I'm glad I got out of the UK whilst I still could. Am also ashamed of the behaviour of the so-called fans - beating up the Danish family, booing the opposition's anthems
Loved Gary Neville's TV comment comparing the leadership of the English football team with the non-leadership of the government
I hope they win, because the team an management deserve it but I feel it will just lead to more xenophobic and nationalist posturing by Johnson

ScotchB · 09/07/2021 18:44

Totally with you , OP! How anyone can hands on heart say they are proud of this government is beyond me.

HappyMeal654 · 09/07/2021 18:45

A bit too deep in my opinion

Waxlyrically · 09/07/2021 18:45

I agree OP I’m ashamed to be English too & also loathe this government but I am happy that the England team has brought so many people such joy. What I find particularly poor is the government using it all as a smokescreen for the real issues it wants to avoid. Politics and sport shouldn’t be associated in my view.

Roxy69 · 09/07/2021 18:47

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

Agreed. Very well said. Actually I am heartily sick of the moaners, we live in a great country which is why people risk life and limb to get here.
Weareallvirgins · 09/07/2021 18:48

Careful one of the breakless lorry drivers dosnt mash you up on the motorway @littlegreybird you might have something genuine to moan about if they do

Madjakelmum · 09/07/2021 18:50

Stop being so bloody miserable! We have all had a shit year. Please let people celebrate. I am so bloody proud of how they are doing!!

Glitterbug44 · 09/07/2021 18:55

Having worked in a hospital all through covid welcome this light relief 😅

MagicSummer · 09/07/2021 18:57

@theJade - what is an Leui day?

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 19:06

To all the people on this thread who’ve said they’re ashamed to be English. If that’s the way you feel why don’t you just fuck off and live somewhere else.

JohnFather · 09/07/2021 19:11

Perhaps, better the homegrown fascists we know, than the Johnny-foreigner variety that might prove more lethal. Just a positive thought to hold onto. 😂

Etinox · 09/07/2021 19:11

It’s been said before on this thread but that’s sort of the point. We can’t because same little Englanders who have their nastier side brought out by football voted us out of Europe. Pre Brexit (& admittedly Covid) my whole extended family studied, lived, and holidayed a substantial part of the year overseas. So being stuck here watching thugs boo other countries national anthem and shine lasers is a bigger deal than it was.

That saying I’m inordinately excited about Sunday and love the current team. Confused

"Careful one of the breakless lorry drivers dosnt mash you up on the motorway @littlegreybird you might have something genuine to moan about if they do"

" If that’s the way you feel why don’t you just fuck off and live somewhere else."

Ah, the cream of English nationalism...

Hiphopboppertybop99 · 09/07/2021 19:13

I hope if you're not feeling great OP you can get any help or support you may need.
But as for the rest of your OP..... I think you need to get a grip, what has a football tournament got to do with your daily commute ?? Opposing teams have always booed through national anthems whilst it's not great its hardly sickening.
Disclaimer: I HNRTFT.

stayathomer · 09/07/2021 19:14

the disgraceful behaviour of a few louts at the recent match reflecting on All fans
Go back and listen to/watch the last match or the Germany match. The booing was more than a few louts. At one point we could see so many jeering fans facing a group of opposing fans who were just looking straight ahead. Irish coverage shot a few times to different SECTIONS booing. And they weren't your obvious idiots, eg the camera zoomed in on a very angry looking modelesque woman in a suit. Our radio the following morning was calling for the english to be banned from a few matches. I dont know, maybe there needs to be education on this sort of stuff? Adverts or something? Sounds crazy but then it all was!

writingsonthewall · 09/07/2021 19:16

Jeez there's always a few that just absolutely have to be as miserable and down on everything as possible. Yawn.

FlyingBattie · 09/07/2021 19:20

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I'll exercise my dearly held right to criticise the government whenever I want, thanks. Doesn't mean I want to leave.
FlyingBattie · 09/07/2021 19:23

Also, I love football. Hate (some) football fans. The majority are fine.

pendeen123 · 09/07/2021 19:24

One of the reasons I didn't vote Labour at the last election -despite previously been a regular Labour voter over 30+ years-is that I believ e that a large section of the Labour Party positively hate England,and many of the texts on this post only emphasise that belief.

HadEnoughofOtherThreads · 09/07/2021 19:24

I’m not into football, but I am enjoying the euphoria/feel good factor of the win.

I’ve yet to personally meet anyone IRL who is bat shit crazy enough to verbally declare that they are proud of the current Government Hmm

StoneofDestiny · 09/07/2021 19:28

How anyone can hands on heart say they are proud of this government is beyond me

Totally agree

rosyAndMoo · 09/07/2021 19:29

I feel I agree with you OP. It’s a shame that we can’t have anything nice without the minority ruining it for the many. I’m glad England won, and it’s uplifting that we have finally got to a cup final, but it would be nicer if that wasn’t tarred in some way by the minority of football fans spoiling it by booing during other teams anthems. It’s that sort of yobbish behaviour that has gotten England such a bad rep. As for brexit, I agree again. I still believe that leaving the EU has put the Uk at a significant disadvantage that is going to take decades to recover from. And yes that does make me feel quite sad. You are not being unreasonable to feel the way you do. But try to stay positive about the bigger picture… if you can. I know that with my son and my hubby by my side that world which seems so dark at times can be a brighter place

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 19:36

@NannyPlumsSnarkyWand

Would you like to explain that comment ? I’m sick of people apologising for being English, being white, being ‘privileged’. It doesn’t help any cause and it just encourages division and racism. We’re so busy analysing what we are and who we are, that we’ve forgotten that we’re all human. Put things in proportion. This is a football tournament. IT should be about the sport and nothing else.
