To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

I don't like football, the government or Brexit. But I am happy for the first time that the England team seem, dare I say it, respectful! I let the children stay up to watch the game and they enjoyed it immensely. Me, not so much. But once I had put them to bed, I loved the sound of people singing after the game. I can't be annoyed at the sound of happy people. I could go into how crap the world is right now but, to be honest, a little bit of happiness is what we need right now

FlyingBattie

"Not saying you hold that opinion, but many of the "if you don't like it fuck off" people are the same ones telling other people to "fuck off to your own country"

Yes, I have noticed that as well.

SueSaid · 09/07/2021 20:42

'As I said, there are a number of posts in this thread expressing shame at being English'

Yes I mean criticise government decisions all you like but people who are 'ashamed to be English' have no idea what a brilliant country it is. I've lived and worked abroad a lot in my younger years so know what dictatorships and having no civil liberties actually is. I wonder if the 'I'm ashamed!' Hand wringers have never left their village and follow drips like Owen Jones on twitter.

We're very lucky in this country and look how many people want to come here!!

FlyingBattie · 09/07/2021 20:46

I think truly there is a difference between hating the country so much you want to harm it (eg home grown terrorists) and just generally not liking your fellow citizens at times.
I'm neither proud or ashamed to be from the UK. I just am. I am grateful to live here though, instead of somewhere with less rights and protections.

SueSaid · 09/07/2021 20:47

'I do have a problem with the ‘ Some lads have won a semi-final and Johnson put on a shirt, so we can forgive the excess deaths, the very poor behaviours, the lies and cronyism, the ministerial code breaches and sneaking through of quite concerning legislative changes.'

Oh fgs change the record. No one is 'forgiving' anything I think you'll find there is an Independent inquiry planned. Maybe watch the news to keep abreast of these things?

Also @FlyingBattie. Not saying you hold that opinion, but many of the "if you don't like it fuck off" people are the same ones telling other people to "fuck off to your own country"

This is an entirely different argument, it’s racist and it’s not at all what I’m suggesting. I understand why people seek asylum and safety here and I’m not against immigration. I’m simply saying I’m tired of listening to people pulling our country down when we DO have a lot to be proud of. I really don’t see what’s so wrong with that. I read the thread and quite a few posts are citing the flimsiest of reasons for being ‘ashamed’ to be English. Pardon me for taking offence.

User135644 · 09/07/2021 20:48

As someone else, I doubt the lorry drivers will be cheering on England.

User135644 · 09/07/2021 20:50

@3scape

Me: Embarrassed to be in England because of shitty rude behaviour and expecting better behaviour and manners. MN: well you can fuck off somewhere else then. I must conclude England is happy with such a low bar then. Hmm
I noticed that as well.

Way to prove the point MN.

Roussette · 09/07/2021 20:51

Like who? Who wants to come here, or more importantly who can?

As we well know, without immigration, this football team would consist of about 3 players. They are the most diverse team ever. Take that and shove it PrittiPatel.

adawong · 09/07/2021 20:55

Who wants to come here
Fucking shitloads but you have always been anti British and anti brexit.

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 20:56

Like who? Who wants to come here, or more importantly who can?

People who risk their lives in flimsy boats, at the mercy of people smugglers, looking for a better life which, rightly or wrongly, they perceive the UK as being able to give them.

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 20:58

How have people missed what people will risk to come here

Then loads do anyway, I did in 20s as so many of my friends did

Anti U.K. stuff is rife with a few posters though

Maybe they haven’t lived anywhere else to compare

Sandpiper77 · 09/07/2021 20:58

I think that first of all we need to be clear that we are not talking about the game itself here, its the supporters and some of the other stuff that has gone on since the win. We also need to acknowledge that it is a good job that England won , otherwise the incidence of domestic violence would have gone up like a rocket and that's very sad, - that there is that connection there. I think booing at another country's national anthem is unacceptable. We would be jumping up and down if it happened to UK. We are beginning to be the first to start crying when something happens that we don't like but we appear to have no insight into our own behaviour. This government has made a lot of bad decisions re Covid, including the latest one of allowing the Delta variant to come in and spread like wildfire. That could easily have bee avoided. It has given away £37 bn to two firms to provide a track and trace system that has not materialised, but then refused to properly fund our public services and our public servants. One of those firms Serco had already been fined £19.2 million by the serious fraud office over the tagging system. So" yes" it is a shit government . Living abroad, at least in Europe is not an easy option either due to the Brexit vote, so saying to people "you don't need to live here" is not helpful. Need I go on. I can do. There's plenty to say.

Roussette · 09/07/2021 20:59

@adawong

What?
I'm not anti British, so no idea what you're on about.

Anti Brexit, yes a million times over

Roussette · 09/07/2021 21:00

Sandpiper spot on

Gosh Carrie, you are very rude in some of your posts.
SueSaid · 09/07/2021 21:03

@Roussette

Like who? Who wants to come here, or more importantly who can?

As we well know, without immigration, this football team would consist of about 3 players. They are the most diverse team ever. Take that and shove it PrittiPatel.

Have you not heard of immigration? Well you must have because then you point out we have a brilliant team because of immigration Confused

We still have immigration y'know, Just with rules, points, visas etc. Much the same as many countries! it is nothing new. And as @pam290358 says that is without the thousands who risk life and limb entering illegally. They come from actual shit countries though with genuine corruption so of course they want to come to the UK.

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 21:03

@User135644. I made that comment, and it was not aimed at people simply saying that they were ‘Embarrassed to be in England because of shitty rude behaviour and expecting better behaviour and manners’. It was aimed at people expressing actual shame at being English. Totally different thing. Sorry if you think I set a low bar, but just sick of it. We’ve been through a pandemic, myself and thousands of others have lost friends and family. We’re hopefully seeing the end in sight and finally have something to be happy about, and it just makes me angry when people express shame at their heritage over the flimsiest of reasons when so many people in this country have given so much for the national good.

Whatamess582 · 09/07/2021 21:04

100% with you OP. Living abroad will can be your perception of your home country. England fans have ruined the. Tournament for me. And I’m so ashamed at their behaviour. Booing the team for showing solidarity with BLM… (and their teammates)… and cheering a little girl who was devastated for her team leaving… but it’s a sore indictment of England as a whole at the moment.
And also if England win then brexiteers will conflate this with sovereignty and nationalism and i will probably vomit.

SueSaid · 09/07/2021 21:05

'Gosh Carrie, you are very rude in some of your posts.'

'Carrie' oh how funny! Shall I now say 'oo shush Angela Rayner'? All the lolz 🙄.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 09/07/2021 21:06

“It’s just the fans”

It’s a minority of “fans” the majority of fans are simply wishing their country to bring home the trophy”.

I say this as a Scottish woman married to a English man.

In any country their are football yobs (many euro countries had news reports of football yobs highlighted this week) this is simply not just England alone, it’s not excusable how we don’t let the minority out shadow the support of the majority.

SueSaid · 09/07/2021 21:08

This.

Get a grip and lighten up. Gareth etc are beacons of positivity and determination, something some of you could try a bit of.

HarrietPierce · 09/07/2021 21:09

"We’ve been through a pandemic,"

Let's change that to the present continuous "We are going through a pandemic"

SueSaid · 09/07/2021 21:15

'We also need to acknowledge that it is a good job that England won , otherwise the incidence of domestic violence would have gone up like a rocket and that's very sad'

This was discussed previously you may need to read back a bit. Abusers abuse, they don't need a reason. The problem is the abuser you see. Do you think we should avoid things that make violent people more violent or do you not think perhaps the problem is the abuser???

pam290358 · 09/07/2021 21:16

@HarrietPierce. I did qualify that statement by saying that we’re hopefully seeing the end in sight, but the point I was making is that we’re concentrating on the negative aspects when we have something positive to focus on for a change. In the great scheme of things a football tournament may not be that important, but surely England’s achievement is something to be proud of and something to lift the nation’s spirit at a pretty depressing time.
