To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

Calm down dear![/quote]
What an original reply

VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 18:46

The use of the term 'hun' should result in a 3 match ban

The vaccine rollout has been impressive. 
Because it was organised by the NHS

...which is a government service

The vaccine rollout may have been organised by the NHS, but the government chose the people to lead vaccine procurement and gave them the funds and backup to do it amazing well.

Poor Denmark are angry at the England antics, but taking it with the class and humility you'd expect from them in this tournament.

I'll just leave this here:

"Denmark was cheated."

"And then they wonder why no one likes England,"

"Let the English party," the opinion piece was headlined. "They have nothing else, and rejoice instead that you have woken up in Denmark."

@thenewduchessofhastings

I'm glad they won;unfortunately there are women out there that last night were wishing for a win otherwise they'd find themselves on the receiving end of their DH's/DP's bad mood if England lost.

For some perpetrators of DV something like England losing is a trigger.

As is Engerland winning, apparently.

And this is footballs fault how????
Cam22 · 08/07/2021 19:25

As for the crowds of unmasked hordes. Stunningly stupid.

user1496146479 · 08/07/2021 19:26

@SimonJT

Its fairly standard to boo the opposing teams national anthem, it isn’t something that just England fans do, nor is it football specific.
No it's not!!!! HmmHmm
Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 19:29

Confused I’m fine @placemats

Sanguinesuzy · 08/07/2021 19:35

@ThursdayWeld the very same government that encouraged fans to boo English football players for being too "woke." Couldn't make it up.

Candyflossss · 08/07/2021 19:35

@Rapskallion

I don’t know what game some of you were watching last night?! I’m not even an England fan and I thought Denmark were the utter cheats. Calling on medics multiple times for ‘injuries’ to waste time and slow the game down when they were under pressure from England.

Great game, though. Wish the misery guts would pipe down and watch Netflix instead.

This doesn't suit a lot of posters agenda and anti english rhetoric though unfortunately.

I think I've stumbled into a Millwall forum!

England losing is only a casual link - excess alcohol is the trigger.

Exactly. You can't blame football for this. Men who carry out domestic violence will always find a reason to carry out domestic violence.
VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 19:47

There is an increase in domestic violence following a loss - so it's not purely the drink, it's the drink plus the anger which is a toxic mix.

But no, football's not to blame. Correlation is not causation.

As others have said abusers will always have a reason.

It's nothing to do with football it is because they are abusers.

Ratalie · 08/07/2021 19:59

Alcohol is certainly the biggest factor for DV spikes, which is why the largest increases occur on NYE and Christmas.

gingganggooleywotsit · 08/07/2021 20:01

@minisoksmakehardwork

I'm using this team in my work as an example of persistence, determination and effort to promote a growth mindset with disadvantaged and send students.

Maybe instead of beating on the team and what others might do with them, everyone else can take a leaf out of their book.

In a period of time when people have not been able to live 'normally', the England football team have been a beacon of hope. Hope for a positive win, a positive future. Continuing in the face of adversity and against a history of defeat which has weighed heavy in the hearts of many a footballer and fan. They have pushed themselves at the same time as recognising that others are not as fortunate as themselves over this last year.

Honestly, people will do what people do with regards to yobbish or risky behaviour. Instead of that, which we can't change, focus on what you can. Which is to see the benefits.

A great post that the op ought to read.

@ThursdayWeld the vaccine rollout wasn’t even organised by the NHS, it was organised by the Logistics Corps. The army never seem to get any credit!

LemonRoses · 08/07/2021 20:51

Well, except Patrick Valance was already in post before Johnson and Hancock, As was Chris Whitty. Oxford were researching a Coronavirus vaccine effective against MERS before the first C19 case reached our shores.
Many doses were produced in Europe and imported. We did approve the vaccine slightly ahead of other nations, but it’s not the government that approved it. In the case of the Covid19 vaccines, the MHRA gave temporary approval ahead of European Medicines Agency to approval for vaccines. In an emergency EU countries are allowed to use their own regulator. That has ever been the case. Nothing to do with Brexit and nothing much to do with our government- although they claim the applause. The EU on the whole awaited the full EMA approval rather than going for batch specific approval on temporary licence.

No it wasn’t.

VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 21:03

It really wasn't

OutComeTheWolves · 08/07/2021 21:07

@DdraigGoch

There doesn't seem anyone controversial/a bit of a twat on the team like in previous years (Gaza, John Terry etc). So I do feel like they would deserve a win. *@OutComeTheWolves* I did notice Kyle Walker's name in the lineup. The one who hired two prostitutes for a sex party during the first lockdown.
Ha I didn't know that! I'll stand corrected there Grin
