To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?
@User135644 which players do you think are cheats?
Kane is a disgrace, but then he's like that for his club. He spent most of last night's match diving for free kicks and then England created their best chances from those free kicks. Pure cynical.

Sterling is bad for diving. Listening to his comments after the game, he thinks simply touching a defenders leg makes him entitled to go down and get a pen. Grealish is always diving (although he gets fouled a fair bit too). Pickford's assault on Van Dijk last season was horrendous. No place for that on a football pitch.

madamedesevigne · 08/07/2021 17:36

I feel the government thrive on stoking division and pitting different groups against each other, and grinding us all down to make us all totally aggrieved and miserable. I feel like it’s an act of resistance to take some real joy in the England team’s achievements and they all seem like lovely fellas. So I’m concentrating on being happy and celebrating.

placemats · 08/07/2021 17:39

Pickford should have seen red for that assault on Van Dijk.

Cam22 · 08/07/2021 17:40

All I can say is : Go Italia!🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹

Cam22 · 08/07/2021 17:42

Nauseating triumphalism.
Diving.
Horrendously biased “analysis”.
Rio Ferdinand.

And so much more.

Cam22 · 08/07/2021 17:43

Kane is a cheating diver.
Ditto Sterling.

Basil2021 · 08/07/2021 17:43

What a miserable thread. Its bringing happiness to people after a shit 18 months. Southgate is a good role model. Honestly, you don't have to watch it. And you think Labour wouldn't be jumping on England doing well if they were in power? Of course they would. Just enjoy it or ignore it.

Are you a bot? Any thread with a slight political slant and up you pop like a Tory cheering meercat

I like to think of them as Priti Patel's court jester.

I got Italy in the work sweepstake so I'm very much Forza Azzurri this weekend! Grin

No, I'm not.
I haven't posted much over the last few weeks actually - did you miss me? Grin

In fact - have I posted anything political on this thread yet?

thenewduchessofhastings · 08/07/2021 18:14

I'm glad they won;unfortunately there are women out there that last night were wishing for a win otherwise they'd find themselves on the receiving end of their DH's/DP's bad mood if England lost.

For some perpetrators of DV something like England losing is a trigger.

Clavinova · 08/07/2021 18:17

England losing is only a casual link - excess alcohol is the trigger.

devastating · 08/07/2021 18:21

I agree with everything you have said OP. Including that the team are good and played well. Am embarrassed by the booing. Also thought the penalty may not have been deserved. Can’t stand Boris Johnson and yes if they win on Sunday it will become part of his populist rhetoric.

I am half English half Italian though, so Sunday will be interesting Grin. As I live in England I think I will be supporting Italy, but if I lived there I think it would be the other way round!

placemats · 08/07/2021 18:23

Tell Tory MP Lee Anderson that this tournament isn't political.

He's boycotting England games because the players take the knee.

One politician having an opinion doesn't make it political.
Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 18:26

What the hell has Boris Johnson got to do with this?

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 18:28

So a politician you don’t like likes England. And you decide not to support England as a result? Some people are completely weird.

Rapskallion · 08/07/2021 18:29

I don’t know what game some of you were watching last night?! I’m not even an England fan and I thought Denmark were the utter cheats. Calling on medics multiple times for ‘injuries’ to waste time and slow the game down when they were under pressure from England.

Great game, though. Wish the misery guts would pipe down and watch Netflix instead.

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 18:30

Yes. One player went down for ages.

placemats · 08/07/2021 18:34

@Hdhdjejdj

You okay hun?

Calm down dear!

I agree! So much shirt grabbing, at one point a Dane practically had Sterling in a bear hug. They were total cheating bastards.

England were far and above the superior team. And I am happy to admit when they're not, they've even had games in other tournaments where they've gone through and it hasn't been deserved. But last night they worked the hardest and played the cleanest.
