To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

The most honest appraisal came from Dietmar Hamann

Phantasmo · 08/07/2021 14:44

It does warm my cockles that all the usuals who were up in arms about the England team taking the knee are now in a sticky spot. Do they continue their boycott or do they concede. Or do they pretend they're boycotting but actually watch the final in the broom cupboard under the stairs

Xxxxeverywherexxxx · 08/07/2021 14:46

People being happy is lovely. I haven't watched it. Not that fussed. But I smiled to myself a few times the last couple of weeks. Seeing drunk people happy. People dressed up etc. People need to live again and if this virus continues to affect us to the point of being limited it prooves the vaccine program and masks have not changed things enough.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 14:50

@User135644 please tell us how England cheated in last night's game?

Massive LOL at "Italians have cheating ingrained even though they don't like others cheating" 😂😂😂 so it's ok for Italians to be massive hypocrites but not the English.

I think you're also missing fundamental point*@User135644* - when you disparage the English you mean the fans. The players have played a very clean game this tournament. Some fans have let the side down but the players don't represent ALL fans. But when you talk about Italian cheaters, you mean the players. See the difference?

DynamoKev · 08/07/2021 14:53

@placemats

others have suggested that anyone who celebrates the win is a xenophobic racist who condones cheating in sport and domestic violence.

Oh do give over. No one has suggested this.

Not in a single post, but in various places - have your read the whole thread? You were contending that 'If your not fully on board with what we think is the fantastic win last night, then you are an England hater.'

No analysis, no discussing the manner of the win, just jingoistic nonsense.
Which was a gross misrepresntation of the thread.

lllllllllll · 08/07/2021 14:56

Goodness me OP, what a misery you are!

slightlysnippy · 08/07/2021 15:03

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

'I'm proud of the government'GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin so nuts made we laugh
Oneearringlost · 08/07/2021 15:07

@Tiari

Totally agree with you OP.

I'm ashamed of this corrupt country and I'm ashamed of this corrupt government.
If I could afford to leave, I would.

Absolutely with you
Bluethrough · 08/07/2021 15:09

Thought England played as fairly as any other team and the penalty (in the VAR era) must have been valid - with Labour on this.

Yep a link on demostic violence and footie but thats a society thing, not a football issue.

i thought male police officiers are more likely to be involved in demostic violence? should we ban them?

placemats · 08/07/2021 15:11

At best an indirect free kick in the penalty box should have been awarded.

@HarebrightCedarmoon

placemats · 08/07/2021 15:13

'Impeding an opponent with contact' would mean that every corner kick is potentially a penalty.

Clavinova · 08/07/2021 15:29

Dietmar Hamann - "German professional football coach, former player and media personality" - is probably still upset that Germany were knocked out of the tournament by England.

1forAll74 · 08/07/2021 15:33

Football has mainly brought out the best in people for a few weeks, and cheered fans up. Teams win,or lose, and you will always get some people who boo at things at times., it has always been the same.

If you don't feel anything about our country anymore, where would you like to live, and feel happier. !

placemats · 08/07/2021 15:40

I'm perfectly happy living in England. I'm also happy not to support the teams at a national level. Rugby, cricket, football.

However I do support England in the Athletics.

placemats · 08/07/2021 15:42

@Clavinova

Played for Liverpool and City.

placemats · 08/07/2021 15:43

I support England in the athletics because it's the UK.

PhilSwagielka · 08/07/2021 15:43

@GoldenLabbie in fairness, getting tickets for United is an absolute nightmare.

Please don't. People are allowed to not like sport and still want to stay in their home country.
Enko · 08/07/2021 15:49

I haven't read the entire thread and I am not British I am Danish though I have lived in the UK for my adult life.

The English team played well yesterday no doubt about it. I think they are a team to be proud of

question mark over the penalty but it happens in all big tournaments and I took it as it was.

Having said that.
Booing over the other team's national anthem.
Shining a laser light at the goalie during the penalty kick to put him off
Calling a young girl a nazi bitch because she was crying her team had not won..
NOT ok
and I do not feel they are behaviours that anyone should be proud of.

I am a member of a group for Danish people living in the UK. One of the Danish supporters told us her husband had been assaulted on the way home yesterday from the match. In front of their 9-year-old.

Another reported that her English friends had suggested she get her coat off and roll up her Danish flag when they walked through Manchester town centre after the match as the friends were worried she would not be safe.. She said it was the first time she had felt unsafe.

This is not behaviour to be proud of. it is not sportsmanship.

To me it is that behaviour that needs to change. The team to me dealt with their win well and I felt they deserved their celebration.

PlacidPenelope · 08/07/2021 15:51

Please don't. People are allowed to not like sport and still want to stay in their home country.

Of course, but is it necessary for them to disparage and sneer at those who do?

Clavinova · 08/07/2021 15:53

@ Clavinova Played for Liverpool and City

He also played for Germany in the Euros in 2000 and 2004 - and
"scored the winning goal in Germany's qualifier for the 2002 World Cup against England in October 2000"

I expect he was overjoyed that England beat Germany in a knockout game this time.

placemats · 08/07/2021 15:57

Jadon Sancho has moved from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United - can't wait to see him play in the Premiership.

He's an excellent player and proud of his team, as he should be.

A win is a win. But this nonsense about having to support England if you are British and live in England really irks me.

@Enko

I'm really sorry to read that.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 08/07/2021 15:57

Or you could just stay away from threads on MN about it or posts on Facebook and Twitter

Lol. Yeah, it's so easy to not see the (very very many) posts about football.

Hiding every post about it would take up WAY too much time.

Please note, my complaint isn't that it exists. My complaint is that it's impossible to get away from. So if you can't beat em...

placemats · 08/07/2021 15:58

England beat Germany fair and square. The German side were not good enough.
