To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

I wonder how many Italians are voicing the opinion that they hope their national team doesn’t win.

How many Argentinians thought they cheated England out of a win from a blatant hand ball.

I can’t imagine any other country having anyone of their people saying they don’t want their countries team to win.

ThursdayWeld · 08/07/2021 14:11

@placemats

So this thread has descended into

'If your not fully on board with what we think is the fantastic win last night, then you are an England hater.'

No analysis, no discussing the manner of the win, just jingoistic nonsense.

Well what is your analysis of the penalty that should have been awarded to England for the tackle on Kane?
PlacidPenelope · 08/07/2021 14:12

Cheating is more ingrained in South American football and part of the culture

What a statement, you denigrate an entire Continent and think you are the superior one. Unbelievable.

I agree. It's a very English thing.

For every 'little Englander' there's at least one person determined to find fault in everything British. It's an interesting phenonemon.

Candyflossss · 08/07/2021 14:15

@User135644 but you keep jumping onto different points.

One minute it's the team, if someone comes back to you saying okay he may have gone down easily but every team does it we then jump to fan behaviour.

Then if that gets batted back, it's the English media.

Then we jump to the fact Italy's media was apparently using a very witty quote in describing England making it to the final which isn't exactly pleasant and sportsman like but in the next breath saying that England media would be all over other teams who cheat. Which is what Italy has done too no? So why you not slagging them off??

Lets not forget his goal was reviewed by VAR and stood. Which means there was no clear and obvious mistake. Whether people think he went down easily is highly irrelevant.

I just don't understand your point. You obviously don't like England in footballing terms at all.

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 08/07/2021 14:17

I couldn't care less who wins. I just want it to be over already.

Facebook/Mumsnet/Twitter etc should have a football filter....

It's about the sport, not the continent. Cheating and gamesmanship is just part of the game there, it's just how it is. If you watched the Copa America this month on BBC you'd see just how bad it gets.

Yet you watch a Premier League game and the pundits go mad if a foreigner dives. An English players does it and he's 'clever'. That's not on.

Or you could just stay away from threads on MN about it or posts on Facebook and Twitter.

I didn't think it was a penalty either. Legs got tangled in defence, it happens. Player went for the ball first. I'm fair and square with this.

Defence means sometimes taking the yellow card if it means stopping the opposition. Obvious foul on goal is clear red. Sometimes this wins matches. www.sportbible.com/football/take-a-bow-foul-play-federico-valverde-committed-the-greatest-ever-professional-foul-20200113

I despise those footballers who deliberately hurt.

I don't like or accept cheating but Italians, rightly or wrongly, accept it as part of the game, even if they won't like it when against them. It's more ingrained there which is why antics like Immobile the other night are normal with an Italy team. To me, it's cheating.

However, it's England that go mad when other teams do it but still refuse to even acknowledge just how bad their own players are for it. You see it even on Match of the day all the time. Foreigner - cheat, English player - clever. For exactly the same offence.

Never heard a commentator saying an English player is 'clever' if he dives, I've heard across the board condemnation of players that do whatever their nationality.

No it hasn't. There's been a lot of debate. Some people have suggested people who aren't happy with the win are England haters, others have suggested that anyone who celebrates the win is a xenophobic racist who condones cheating in sport and domestic violence. Some people are just determined to see things in a binary manner.
SueSaid · 08/07/2021 14:28

@SimonJT

Its fairly standard to boo the opposing teams national anthem, it isn’t something that just England fans do, nor is it football specific.
Haven't rtft but this!

What a brilliant game! Southgate and his team all seem such nice people none of the swagger and arrogance of previous teams.

If they lose on Sun it'll of course be disappointing but those of us in the UK should all be proud of how far they've come. Not sure why people are trying to shoehorn Brexit and the cabinet into it Grin

So basically, Italians - and those funny foreign Latin type folks in general - just have lower ethical standards than English players do? So we shouldn't condemn Italians or Brazilians when they cheat, because, well, they're just not as moral as us?

I'd step away from the computer if I were you. I get that you're angry over England's victory, and perhaps it's clouding your sense of logic, but maybe time to take a minute to process your rage away from this board.

I suggest you read the rules about penalties.

[quote Clavinova]CaptainThe95thRifles
the English were diving and shoving all over the place like the thugs they are

Seems unlikely looking at these official UEFA stats - fouls committed after 6 games:

Denmark 75
Spain 72
Italy 72
England 58

I suggest you highlight the particular rule in the rules of penalties that made this a penalty. Otherwise your comment is invalid.

Miserable

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 14:39

a player commits any of the following acts against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
charges
jumps at
kicks or attempts to kick
pushes
tackles or challenges
trips or attempts to trip
holding an opponent
impeding an opponent with contact

All of the above, with respect to the penalty decision.

I'm not sure what evidence you have for the notion that no English people acknowledge if an English player cheats.

Nor what evidence you have for the fact that any other Media outlet in the world would splash across their headlines, the day after a historical win for their country, as front page news 'OUR NATIONAL TEAM ARE DSIGRACEFUL CHEATS WHO SHOULDN'T BE IN THE FINAL, FUCK THEM AND THEIR FANS'

Such a strange stance. You honestly think other countries slag their own players off much more than they do the opposing team?

Also, for what it's worth, the pundits afterwards always discuss 'controversial' decisions. They don't always agree.

Some info that’s good

Do you think it was fairly awarded?
