To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

And I see you are ignoring my question about Brazil. Should Brazilians boycott their team because of Neymar's repeated blatant cheating, far worse than anything the England team has done?

Not to mention Pepe et al for Portugal in previous tournaments. They were completely disgusting. And won. It frustrated me as their football could be so lovely and all the kicking, diving and rolling around was so unnecessary.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 13:52

I hate the whole ' fake penalty ' talk .. surely that's why VAR was invented?
Why did they give it then ?
I am curious about that decision to be honest.
It'll be like all the other controversial decisions made in the past , brought up time and again.

Candyflossss · 08/07/2021 13:54

@User135644 Why are you so determined to overlook the fact that pretty much every team may go down questionably or a goal that stood shouldn't of done? Or a goal that didn't get given should of been?

It's not just England. Why would the England fans slag themselves and their team off? They get enough of that from everyone else without doing it to themselves.

Shining the light in the keepers eyes is despicable but that was one moron and has no reflection on every England fan or the team.

The team on the whole deserve it. That's not to say Denmark wouldn't of done if they had won but they didn't and that's just the way it goes. Someone has to win don't they.

So much bitterness.

Me too why give it even with VAR

I guess when Brazilians, Portuguese or Italians cheat, it's all done with Latin flair and is so cultured and artistic. But when England allegedly do the same, it's all about knuckle dragging xenophobic little Englanders.

The poster should just come out and say she hates England and is angry that they have won, and would be angry that they'd win in any circumstances, 'cheating' or no. It's so very obvious.

User135644 · 08/07/2021 13:56

Cheating is more ingrained in South American football and part of the culture.

It's English fans and media that get on their high horse over it, when their players are just as bad.

FlaminEckVera · 08/07/2021 13:57

@User135644

But if Italy win through cheating in the final the England fans and media will be up in arms and high and mighty, despite the players and fans (lasers in faces) cheating through this tournament.

Of COURSE Italy will cheat, and push and pull England players about, and kick and foul the English, because that's what they did to get into the semi finals, and into the final.

If England had have behaved as bad as them, they'd have been disqualified.

Other countries CONSTANTLY get away with with shit that England would never get away with though. Hand ball anyone #argentina

So South Americans are just cheats by nature? Which makes it OK?

Listen to yourself.

DynamoKev · 08/07/2021 13:59

@placemats

England were superior defensively, but only just. The score flatters England somewhat.

Every football pundit understands this.

Can you post us a link or two to pundits expressing this view please?

This. And pretty much what I just said.

The LOATHING for the English from some, is pathetic and laughable. Imagine being THAT full of hatred and bitterness? How sad.

The jealousy for the English is strong on this thread.

Candyflossss · 08/07/2021 14:00

I am genuinely baffled by that posters agenda. I'm not sure if they hate football, hate the English or if they are on here for a wind up.

Some of the nonsense they have written, I don't know where to start.

England have been charged by UEFA today for three separate incidents:

The laser in the face of the Denmark keeper before the winning penalty (that the players cheated to win).

The booing of the Denmark national anthem.

Fireworks being set off.

Personally, i'm not bothered who wins on Sunday, it's a case of cheats prosper the presence of both teams in it. I'm just saying England disgraced themselves last night and it seems UEFA agree.

placemats · 08/07/2021 14:00

@IcedPurple

So I'm a hater of England now despite being a Manchester United fan?

If Denmark didn't get a ball during the whole game the score would have been very different.

Accept the win was lucky. Accept that England are in the finals through a lucky chance of the draw and enjoy the match on Sunday.

Go Italy!

SicParvisMagna · 08/07/2021 14:01

@HarebrightCedarmoon

Other peoples opinions are pretty much what you sign up for

And you are on a board called "Am I Being Unreasonable?" which is not known for its lack of strong opinions.

I'm not entirely sure why out of 24 pages of comments you've chosen to hone in on me but crack on Grin I'm literally passing some time while waiting for my second covid jab appointment, and thought I'd read some mumsnet, clearly I shouldn't have!
IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 14:01

You don't actually expect us to believe that, do you?

Your many posts suggest that you are very bothered indeed.

placemats · 08/07/2021 14:02

I agree @User135644

PlacidPenelope · 08/07/2021 14:03

So you accept that Italy cheat and have done in this tournament.

England have NOT cheated throughout this tournament. The penalty was awarded, reviewed and stood.

Some decisions go for a team, some against, far clearer cut penalties have been denied in this tournament, players have remained on the pitch who should have been red carded, referees make the decision and at times are wrong but once they've made the decision that's it.

I'm going to repeat the question of a previous poster.

Can you link to any 'punters' who share your opinion that this was a lucky win for England and that Denmark were the better team?

placemats · 08/07/2021 14:03

Yes, I'm supporting Italy because Italy is my team in international tournaments. When they play Ireland I'm torn.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 14:05

Personally, i'm not bothered who wins on Sunday

Nah, of course not mate. If England win, you'll never hear the end of it, which will annoy you for the rest of your life.

placemats · 08/07/2021 14:05

@IcedPurple

There was only one excellent goal last night. A beauty of a goal.

The team that scored this goal was Denmark.

ThursdayWeld · 08/07/2021 14:05

Personally, i'm not bothered who wins on Sunday

Ha ha ha, sure you aren't! Grin You just totally coincidentally hate England...

placemats · 08/07/2021 14:06

@IcedPurple

I never once said Denmark were the better team.

Punter's views are up thread. If you care to read them.

Yes, it was a great goal, but they needed two more of them and didn't come close to scoring them. Which is why they lost.

Again, who are all these 'pundits' who think Denmark were the superior team last night?

placemats · 08/07/2021 14:09

So this thread has descended into

'If your not fully on board with what we think is the fantastic win last night, then you are an England hater.'

No analysis, no discussing the manner of the win, just jingoistic nonsense.
