To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

@placemats

Look, if England had won fair and square, I'd be watching a match on Sunday between two great football teams.

In all honesty, I dislike getting through with the attitude 'it's about time England got through with a bit of luck.'

England were very clearly the superior team on the night. The scoreline was very flattering to Denmark.

Do you really think Italy have never benefitted from some dodgy refereeing? Or that their fans would give a fiddlers if they did?

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 08/07/2021 13:35

WIM was written to order as the official England World Cup song, featuring several England team members and a clip from Kenneth Wolstenholme. I’m not sure how much more of a football song it could be.

C8H10N4O2 · 08/07/2021 13:37

The likes of Stanley Matthews would be turning in their graves at the antics of England players and the fans these days. It's sad to watch.

Dear gods, did you never see Jackie Charlton and many of his contempories playing fast and loose with the rule book?

I stand corrected!

The English media was all over Italy last week for diving and cheating. Now they're celebrating it because it's England.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 13:38

@SicParvisMagna But you're on social media now, love.

Most England fans have an inferiority complex rather than an air of superiority, as we never win anything and we never think we are good enough to! When several times we have been actually as good as other teams and thrown it away, often due to indiscipline or ructions within the team.

Jack Charlton played for Don Revie's Leeds who cheated as a badge of honour. There were teams like that, but those teams were despised for it.

How about the Italian media? Are they all angsty about this 'diving and cheating'?

Having lived in Italy and followed football there, I can assure you they couldn't give un cazzo about it.

Everyone is happy to overlook dodgy playing when their team wins. If you think this only applies to England, you need to get out more.

I'm no fan of the English media but what Immobile did was not in the same ball park as Sterling last night. I do have some sympathy with players going down easily though (not complete dives when they are untouched) because referees do not see offences unless a player makes more of it.

In one match Romelu Lukaku was fouled several times and stayed on his feet, but the refs didn't notice. These decisions are often game-changing, so of course you want to make damned sure you get the right one when it's a tight match.

Mamamia7962 · 08/07/2021 13:42

The Danish goal should have been disallowed because three of their players moved within a yard of the England players wall before the ball was kicked, which is an illegal move under current football rules. So even if you disallow our penalty we would have still won.

FlaminEckVera · 08/07/2021 13:44

@littlegreybird YABVU.

And you are obviously Scottish.

Never have I seen so much bitterness and hatred, aimed at anyone, as the Scottish have shown towards the ENGLISH over this past 24 hours. Very sad.

For some reason, some people don't want England/The English to do well at anything, or achieve anything good. (And the SCOTTISH are the worst offenders.)

They are coming across as such bitter, jealous, sad losers. Imagine going through life with this attitude. I'll be glad when they get their much longed-for independence. I will be singing from the rooftops, and getting the partypoppers out.

The refereeing was worse then as well. Loads of dirty fouls went unchallenged. Wouldn't want to stop the flow of play. Broken leg mate? Nah, just carry on.

User135644 · 08/07/2021 13:45

The commentary on Italian TV was chanting "Football's cheating home" last night.

GoldenLabbie · 08/07/2021 13:45

@placemats

I don't hate the England team and have been to Old Trafford three times to watch my beloved Manchester United.

England have a great defence.

Two teams who are masters at defence playing on Sunday.

One has a great goalkeeper the other has a keeper who is dodgy at set pieces.

‘Beloved Manchester United’ but you’ve only been to Old Trafford three time……that sound about right🙄
PlacidPenelope · 08/07/2021 13:46

Should all Brazilian fans boycott the national team because of Neymar's antics (far worse than Sterling)?

Or Immobile's antics in the game on Tuesday which Italy won? If the rules had been applied correctly the goal that was scored then should have been disallowed due to Immobile impeding play, but it wasn't. Immobile's antics are antics which the Italians deploy regularly and are designed to win free kicks and get an opposition player booked or sent off, that level of cheating is fine and dandy is it?

placemats · 08/07/2021 13:47

England were superior defensively, but only just. The score flatters England somewhat.

Every football pundit understands this.

Polkadots2021 · 08/07/2021 13:49

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

They are actually, that's what Brexit was all about - OP could've gone and happily lived anywhere in the EU, if she doesn't like it here, but due to this Govt that chance disappeared a long time ago. So no she can't move if she wants to - Boris literally oversaw that removal of her rights himself.

But if Italy win through cheating in the final the England fans and media will be up in arms and high and mighty, despite the players and fans (lasers in faces) cheating through this tournament.

It's going to be an interesting game on Sunday.

If a team is excellent defensively, all tactics have to be deployed to win.

Like for like.

And your point is...?

You're clutching your pearls over one incident of alleged cheating from England, and acting as though English fans are media are alone in not being terribly bothered by it.

The Italians wouldn't give a shit. Neither would anyone else. That's how football is.

And I see you are ignoring my question about Brazil. Should Brazilians boycott their team because of Neymar's repeated blatant cheating, far worse than anything the England team has done?

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 13:50

And you are on a board called "Am I Being Unreasonable?" which is not known for its lack of strong opinions.

singingsoprano · 08/07/2021 13:51

@User135644

Cheating bastards as well. Winning from a blatant dive.

Shameless.

It's not cheating if it is confirmed by VAR and it's no less cheating than the 'hand of God' Maradona goal.
Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 13:51

Decisions go for and against teams all the time. The standard response is to go mad and complain endlessly when it’s against your team and clap enthusiastically while muttering about being lucky when it goes for you. This is part of the emotion and joy of the game. It’s generally accepted that it evens itself out in the end.

IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 13:52

So the fact that the Danes got barely a touch on the ball for much of the match is irrelevant?

I'm genuinely unsure if this is a wind up or not. Hate England as much as you wish, but they were clearly the better team last night.
