To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

This thread is all shades of fucking madness.

@CornedBeef451 was David Baddiel’s book any good? I watched the programme he did on the BBC and it was very good.

VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 12:16

Thank you. I do like to overdramatise it for a bit of fun!

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 12:16

I'm with you apart from the plastic glasses and egg sandwiches. Once you are over the age of 4 you should never have to drink from plastic and egg is the best sandwich filling.

I wonder how many Italian restaurants will be smashed post the match on Sunday?

Clavinova · 08/07/2021 12:17

CaptainThe95thRifles
the English were diving and shoving all over the place like the thugs they are

Seems unlikely looking at these official UEFA stats - fouls committed after 6 games:

Denmark 75
Spain 72
Italy 72
England 58

And the vast majority of the fans don’t behave badly.
I have followed football for over 50 years,
My husband took our son to matches from around aged 6 as his father took him. I spent years standing in a wet field every Saturday and Sunday during the season as my son played youth football.
None of us has ever behaved badly. We have hung St. George’s flags, decorated the car with flags and worn football shirts. We have blown horns and used rattles and had fun.
And the vast majority of football fans are just the same as me.

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 12:18

@placemats no doubt you’re preying it will be lots.

CornedBeef451 · 08/07/2021 12:19

@placemats he's not unproblematic but the book was good.

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 12:20

Out of interest, the people have the people who hate the England team and want them to lose ever been to a football match? I have been to thousands and I have seen a lot more joy and good natured acts between fans than bad.

CornedBeef451 · 08/07/2021 12:20

@LittleNibbler yes it really interesting, I'd recommend it.

No. They're too busy organising candle-light suppers and arranging their doily collections

I'm guessing zero, which would no doubt be an extremely disappointing outcome for you.
MarshaBradyo · 08/07/2021 12:24

Maybe Placemats will stage a couple to lift figures ;

placemats · 08/07/2021 12:27

Who would of thought that England fans would hijack a bus last night?

Must have been terrifying for the driver.

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

I hate it when people say this. Don't you Tories always bang on about being free speech? We are allowed to criticise the government.

Anyway, congratulations to Southgate and the team. I'm not letting a bunch of hypocrites ruin England's victory for me. Let's not forget that plenty of the people cheering the team now were booing them and calling them woke for kneeling and complaining about the number of black players on the squad. Tyrone Mings even called Priti Patel, who is one of said people, out for complaining about the squad taking the knee. When we lose to Italy - and I honestly think we will because they are one of the best teams this tournament - they'll all be sending Raheem Sterling death threats and calling him a n***.

It's always the arsehole ones who make the rest of us look bad.
placemats · 08/07/2021 12:30

I don't hate the England team and have been to Old Trafford three times to watch my beloved Manchester United.

England have a great defence.

Two teams who are masters at defence playing on Sunday.

One has a great goalkeeper the other has a keeper who is dodgy at set pieces.

Working class culture innit?

The snobbery and classism always come out sooner or later. In this case, sooner.

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 12:33

I saw that some people climbed on a bus. I have watched the video and can’t see any violence though.

PhilSwagielka · 08/07/2021 12:34

Pickford's been pretty good for England tbf. I wish he played like that for us! Donnarumma is an absolute beast of a keeper though. He's the new Buffon (who is one of my favourite goalies).

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 12:34

Pickford has been great up until last night.
What is wrong with working-class culture?

Proudboomer · 08/07/2021 12:35

Yes but I am not going to stop loving football, supporting both my premiership team and national team just because of the arsehole element.
I am old enough to remember the bad days of the football “firms” we have come along way from then and as long as the true football fan continue to give their support to the game then it will continue to improve.

PhilSwagielka · 08/07/2021 12:37

@CoralSparkles

If you hate England so much then why do you live here? Move to another country or stop whinging. People from other countries are proud of their country. Also, every country has done shameful things. England isn’t evilHmm
And again: people can criticise their government if they want. It's a free country. And it's not easy for everyone to just uproot and abandon their home. It would have to take a war and the country being too dangerous for me to live in to even consider it. England is my home and my family live here. And where would I go? Most of Europe is governed by right-wingers, some countries are worse than others.
