To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

There will be no official day off.
That won't stop many engaging in an unofficial one!

SmashingBlouson · 08/07/2021 11:48

@Hdhdjejdj

When people are saying that a player being awarded a penalty in a football match is the result of Brexit, they need help.
Oh ffs. It was a bad decision, but we have had so many bad ones against us in the past, so it's a bit if a leveller now. That made me chuckle. Nothing to do with Nigel Farage or Brexit, although I'm sure he will claim it as a Brexit success.
MarshaBradyo · 08/07/2021 11:49

All you are contributing here is insulting other posters, have you anything positive to say?

I laughed rather than insulted as you can see by the … I purposely didn’t insult

But thanks for reading my posts with such intent

Still a bit annoyed? ;

onlyhereforthecake · 08/07/2021 11:49

People are so twattish about England fans.

In fairness, there's a history there!

Proudboomer · 08/07/2021 11:52

Denmark fans don’t throw full glasses of beer over Australian fans or boo the Australian national anthem or put up sexist banners. They don’t give nazi salutes or act in any way other than sweet angels.
But the truth is that have done all of the above. No national team supporters comes out wholly covered in glory. Give me any country and I can give examples of bad fan behaviour.

Yes a laser pen shone at the Danes goalkeeper yesterday.

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceeding against England over this - where do we find these fuckwits?

AgathaAllAlong · 08/07/2021 11:55

You know that the football team is not run by the government, right? The success of one is in no way a refelction of the success of the other.

VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 11:56

Football attract an element of yobs. So does Cricket and yes Rugby isn't immune either.

Football is particularly prone, but we fail to celebrate the majority and focus on the minority.

If you have 60,000 revellers in a city centre, you will have a proportion who are yobs.

aSofaNearYou · 08/07/2021 11:58

@IcedPurple

God why are people so defensive about this? It's making a lot of people unhappy, too, they're allowed to talk about that.

A "lot of people" on MN, maybe.

The overwhelming majority of people are absolutely thrilled.

Yes, your point being? We have to listen to people bang on about it all the time, why do people get so offended when people say they don't like it?
placemats · 08/07/2021 12:05

I hate all this ‘football is for thugs’ and all the shouting may hurt my precious kids ears. Its part of our working-class culture and a huge success story and for all its faults I love it.

I'm sure the Patels and Johnsons will love being described as working class.

England got through with an own goal and a soft penalty. Lasers pointed towards Schmeichel's eyes. Booing of National Anthems.

Good luck Italy on Sunday!

CornedBeef451 · 08/07/2021 12:05

@x2boys I didn't say it was anything to do with the footballers.

However, the repeated previous news articles about footballers getting away with rape probably doesn't help.

I think clubs should have far more responsibility to police their players and supporters so any racism or inappropriate behaviour is punished such as matches being cancelled, tournaments forfeited.

Obviously you can't stop the men in pubs from being abusive wankers but maybe if behaviour in and around the clubs were policed properly this might eventually filter down to international matches.

David Baddiel's book about Antisemitism covered racism in clubs and how it isn't dealt with.

VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 12:06

Cos they are miserable buggers who like to share misery. They drink ovaltine and have put signs on their doors to discourage cold callers.
They buy Xmas presents in March when the prices are low and eat Pringles without emptying the whole tube.
They make love in the dark and bring egg sandwiches to picnics.
They put the kettle on during penalties and never have missing socks.
They have covers for their loo seats and have no plastic glasses in their homes.
These are the people who hoover our collective mood.
Fuck 'em!

Who's 'offended'? I'm certainly not.

Sure, but ,
  1. You know even if other people are behaving badly doesn't mean you have to
  2. Other countries' fans don't tend to behave as badly on average as some English fans.
  3. It's football, it's meant be fun.
placemats · 08/07/2021 12:07

Not everyone who is British supports England.

BlueCupOrangeCup · 08/07/2021 12:08

There's a lot to unpack here isn't there....

I think it basically comes down to understanding:

  1. nothing and no one is perfect in life. No country, no person, no institution.
  2. the ability to welcome without limits good news and be happy for yourself and others is important.
  3. The ability to acknowledge, see and learn from the less good/bad things is also important
  4. It is entirely possible to do 2 and 3 at the same time
  5. Accept that you cannot change and/or fix all the wrongs in the world.
MarshaBradyo · 08/07/2021 12:08

Yep looking at this thread you can see that. Some support whoever England is playing

I’m enjoying the poetic take 😂
Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 12:10

What the hell have Priti Patel and Boris Johnson got to do with anything? Just because they have jumped on the bandwagon doesn’t mean I am going to walk away from the sport I have loved all my life and which means a lot to me and the people I love.

I lived in Italy for several years, during which time I was a season ticket holder at a major Italian club.

Italian football culture has a lot of problems. Racism, violence, corruption and extreme right wing politics among certain fandoms. Not the majority, obviously, but then, the same is true for England.

The people who think that only England has a problem with fan behaviour show their ignorance of football culture.

I know that racism exists in all football fans throughout the world, not just Europe. I would describe myself as a football fan. Yes, a woman who likes football.

C'mon Italy!
