To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

Phantasmo
"@Ostryga, it is possible, you know, to be revolted by the policies of this crooked Tory government and to think that anthem booing is knuckle-dragging wankery, Multi-tasking"

Exactly.

21Bee · 08/07/2021 12:39

@LemonRoses I’m not sure about the other countries but charity donations in the USA are higher for tax purposes.

PhilSwagielka · 08/07/2021 12:42

I'd also add that Italy has a huge problem with racism. Look at the way Moise Kean was treated, or the abuse other black players get. Lazio fans are actual fascists. My second team, Sheffield Wednesday, had an Italian player called Paolo di Canio, who wasn't only an arrogant douchebag (just ask Kevin Pressman or anyone else who had to put up with him) but is also a proud fascist and Mussolini supporter.

Now I'm not insinuating all Italian players or fans are fascists. It's not true at all and left-wing ultras exist. I'm just saying that if you're supporting Italy because you think England and its fans are problematic, you're barking up the wrong tree.

My stepdad and I are both massive lefties, we voted Remain, and we were sending each other happy texts about last night. We've both been following England and just enjoying football for the sake of it (I loved the Sweden and Ukraine match, Germany and Portugal and Switzerland and France!)

My brother pronounces Donnarumma as

Planty13 · 08/07/2021 12:47

I totally agree OP, many England fans are an embarrassment. The laser pen, the booing, ugh.

I was walking past a local beer garden last time they played the the poor servers working table service got bloody drenched as England scored as everyone threw their drinks in the air and started flipping chairs.

I love the community feel and the singing songs but so many take it too far and it is gross.

placemats · 08/07/2021 12:48

Bingo card!

Lazio mentioned.

England has always had a problem with their fans and this booing of National Anthems has to stop. Small steps towards an international football tournament that I love to watch. I've watched all the matches so far.

@LactoseTheIntolerant

I'd be interested to know which country you'd like to live in, which does not have a corrupt government and or other massive problems of its own! Don't be so nieve to think that every other country is some mecca with no issues. We have it a lot easier here then the vast vast majority of countries you actually just sound entitled, in many countries you wouldn't have any rights whatsoever so maybe just try feeling grateful for the freedoms you do have!
Totally agree with this post. These last 18 or so months have been pretty awful all round and whatever party would have been in government would have got a lot of things wrong, just like every other countries have . Looking around the world I think we do have it a lot easier here . I don’t know why everyone just can’t be pleased we have something to celebrate at last, especially the youngster, it was great seeing them smiling and enjoying something at last. It’s a game of football OP just enjoy the happy mood while it lasts who knows what’s round the corner
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/07/2021 12:55

Can’t say I’m surprised by the OP. There’s a sizeable cohort of English people - NB I do not say Brits - who enjoy despising their own country. Not to mention dragging Brexit into everything. And I say that as someone who voted Remain.

I couldn’t normally give a toss about football, but I’m pleased we won. This team’s conduct does seem to be a refreshing change from some of the juvenile, ill-disciplined stuff that’s been seen in the past, so good on Gareth Southgate.

As for booing, yes, it’s shameful, but I can’t think why UEFA don’t impose some simple rule - e.g. the game will not proceed until there has been a boo-free anthem. That would surely sort the yobs out.
But then UEFA is not noted for giving much of a toss about anything but the money.,

C8H10N4O2 · 08/07/2021 12:59

@Lurcherloves

OP we get boo’d at other matches it’s the nature of football, you’ve heard the vile racist comments from some Eastern European fans. I think as a country we take too much abuse. We give a lot to the world, the Astra Zeneca vaccine was a gift and will help many in poor countries. We gave the web, we give more than any other country in personal donations when there is an international crisis. Enough of bashing the country. We do a lot of good.
Others have responded on most of the points here but regarding the web, hate to burst your bubble but Tim Berners-Lee would be the first person to remind you that he was part of an international team working at CERN (an international project).

His contribution was major but was possible because of the international effort and over the last 30 years has been developed via international open source communities - its almost the poster child for internationalism.

@thewooster

Prepare yourself OP it's coming home...and next year we're gonna win Eurovision too.

It's coming home...it's coming home...

Is that the uk Eurovision entry? Grin

Exactly the same as tax contributions in the UK.

Do you not recall the wailing and gnashing of teeth from wealthy individuals and companies when Osborne proposed limiting the tax relief on charitable donations?

The ' three lions' song is an absolute ear worm !
I have to play ' fat Les' with 'vindaloo' to eradicate it!!

AllTheSingleLadys · 08/07/2021 13:02

On Monday morning, I take it we're expecting another slew of 'I wish England hadn't won', or, 'I'm glad England didn't win', posts? Bore off and let some people enjoy an historic moment while it lasts.

PhilSwagielka · 08/07/2021 13:03

Why is it a bingo? I'm just saying that because of the whole 'England are problematic but other teams aren't' card. Also, did you miss the other teams booing the national anthems? Like Spain?

It kind of pains me to say it, because I strongly dislike David Baddiel, but "Three Lions" is the best football song ever.

"World In Motion" is also fab. They don't make them like that anymore.

CrouchEndTiger12 · 08/07/2021 13:07

World in Motion is amazing.

I love new order too 😍

PhilSwagielka · 08/07/2021 13:08

@wanttomarryamillionaire

Seriously! Have a day off OP! People like you who "hate" their own country are part of the reason brexit and the tory government happened! Ordinary British people got so so sick of being told how shit we are and how shit our country is that they started to fight back. Brexit was the voice for millions and it was provided on a plate by the conservative government. If you hate it so much then move abroad, its not that hard to move to the EU even after brexit. After the last year or so the English team are providing a much needed boost to many many people!
Yes, because no ordinary British people voted Remain. We're all just aliens or something.

Sweet Caroline is locked into my head now :)

MagicSummer · 08/07/2021 13:09

OK - I detest football, but could someone answer the following questions:-

  • Why are they called 3 Lions?
  • Why do people keep saying 'It's Coming Home' - what is?
  • Why do the English fans boo other countries' National Anthems?
  • Why does an idiot shine a laser in the goalkeeper's face?
the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 13:10

Would in motion is brilliant.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 13:10

World rather !! 😀

PhilSwagielka · 08/07/2021 13:11

@JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil

‘seeing people like Priti Patel and Boris trying to get in on the action (so fake btw) and dimwit people concluding it's because of Brexit is a bit sickening tbh.’

I sincerely hope Priti Patel is not trying to jump on the bandwagon after she encouraged fans to demotivate the team by booing them taking the knee. She’s the perfect mix of spiteful and stupid.

In any case this demonstrates even more why the team have nothing to do with this awful government or the anti-woke warriors who are desperate to squeeze their newly discovered word ‘woke’ into everything as if it’s going out of fashion. It’s embarrassing.

This team have nothing to do with these people. They are great role models and I’m proud of them. I hope they go all the way. Yes some fans are thugs but most of us are decent people not cabinet ministers, anti-woke warriors or post match wife beaters.

This. Let's not forget that there were people complaining because England had too many black players, slagging off the team for taking the knee and sneering at Southgate for having the temerity to defend his team, Rashford for campaigning for free school meals, and Raheem Sterling for calling out racism from fans.

England's success is in spite of these people, not because of them and I honestly wonder how many of the people posting 'if you don't like it, fuck off somewhere else' are the same people who were calling the team 'woke' and booing them.

It has done a good job of reminding me why I stay out of AIBU most of the time though.

Bluethrough · 08/07/2021 13:12

TBF You have zero idea of how European citizenship works and even less about working in the EU. . which if you voted for Brexit, is no surprise.

  • Because the badge has three lions on it.
  • - It's a reference to the song 'Three Lions', which was written for Euro '96, which was hosted in England. The tagline was 'football's coming home'. - Because fans boo each other's teams in general. Not just England fans do it btw. - Because he's an idiot, and credit to Schmeichel for giving zero fucks. I hope his dad is proud of him.
