To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

OP posts:

I am ashamed when I hear England fans booing other national anthems. It is rude and disrespectful - I think they should be asked to leave the stadium.

It's lucky they don't otherwise the Spain v Italy game would have been empty the other night, or do you think it is only the english fans that do it?

Etinox · 08/07/2021 11:17

@Hdhdjejdj

He is amazing *@Etinox*. Helped by having a legendary father who played for a legendary team Grin.
Op I’ve googled him. He’s practically a Brit!
IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 11:17
@Hdhdjejdj all the pithy little responses don't change the fact that this is a matter of opinion and not empiric fact, and therefore my opinion is just as valid as yours. However since you're not capable of understanding and acknowledging that...
It's an 'empiric fact' that the Danes barely got a shot on goal after the first half of normal time.

How you can claim that Denmark were the better team amazes me. Or, maybe not.

Lurcherloves · 08/07/2021 11:18

OP we get boo’d at other matches it’s the nature of football, you’ve heard the vile racist comments from some Eastern European fans.
I think as a country we take too much abuse. We give a lot to the world, the Astra Zeneca vaccine was a gift and will help many in poor countries. We gave the web, we give more than any other country in personal donations when there is an international crisis.
Enough of bashing the country. We do a lot of good.

I take it you’ve never watched South American football then??

@CornedBeef451

I read somewhere that domestic violence increases dramatically when England play, whether they win or lose.

Drunk men fuelled by testosterone and football excitement love to batter their women. Fun times indeed.

But how, is this the fault of football or the players? If men get drunk and become abusive then they will do so anyway.
IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 11:20

God why are people so defensive about this? It's making a lot of people unhappy, too, they're allowed to talk about that.

A "lot of people" on MN, maybe.

The overwhelming majority of people are absolutely thrilled.

Phantasmo · 08/07/2021 11:22

Booing anthems is revolting, no matter what nationality of fans it is doing the booing.

 • Again, appalling. But not just an English thing, you can guarantee the domestic violence rate rockets in what ever country loses.

Inaccurate. USA, NZ and Canada have more generous population in terms of charitable giving by individuals.

We’re below Sweden and Switzerland in terms of per capita GDP for international aid.

In terms of AZ it is a bit of an international project and not ‘given’ anywhere. Other countries are paying for it. Many poor countries are paying more per dose than EU nations because they don’t have the same bargaining power. The rich governments, including the UK are definitely looking after their own political ends first.

That is an incredibly short sighted but sadly popular strategy.

Oh calm down.

I find the Universal Credit cut, plunging hundreds of thousands of children below the poverty line and essentially starving them revolting.

I can’t get worked up about booing. It’s a noise. Who cares, truly.

LemonRoses · 08/07/2021 11:29

No it’s not football per se that is bad. It’s tolerance of appalling fan behaviour and bandwagon jumping by government.

Rashford would seem to be a far better leader than our cabinet.

DdraigGoch · 08/07/2021 11:29

There doesn't seem anyone controversial/a bit of a twat on the team like in previous years (Gaza, John Terry etc). So I do feel like they would deserve a win.
@OutComeTheWolves I did notice Kyle Walker's name in the lineup. The one who hired two prostitutes for a sex party during the first lockdown.

Phantasmo · 08/07/2021 11:30

@Ostryga, it is possible, you know, to be revolted by the policies of this crooked Tory government and to think that anthem booing is knuckle-dragging wankery, Multi-tasking Smile

Why do people think that some of the scenes of people enjoying themselves only happen in England, the same sort of people who use dopey phrares like 'rip off Britian' and 'broken Britain'? I do wish that the ostriches would get their heads out of the sand and their arses out of the air and realise that it's the same the world over! When Italy won the World Cup in, I think, '82 the Italian population of our German town went wild, driving rould the streets all night, horns blaring, flags waving. We're not a different breed and I speak as someone who has watched football through the good times and the bad for almost 70 years, not as someone who has become an armchair expert in the last couple of weeks!
VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 11:35

Domestic violence increases after betting losses, alcohol consumption, drug use, cricket losses, job losses and more.

That isn't football, that is men as a group and their inability to keep their emotions in check, or under control enough to not resort to physical, verbal or mental abuse.

iBrows · 08/07/2021 11:37

If you’ve been feeling down for so long, go to the GP.

It’s coming home Football

Calmdown14 · 08/07/2021 11:38

Honestly I think some of these comments reflect why mental health is so poor.
We are very privileged to live where we do, regardless of what you think of the current government.
Perhaps if we stop over analysing everything and just enjoy it as a win for a sports team we'd all feel a lot better.
The England team of this generation have behaved well, reflect a lot of the diversity of our society and are drawn from many clubs, not just the big three.
It's giving families separated for a long time a nice occasion to come together, whether in person or not.
They're not the greatest team that has ever lived, they don't have to be. But they've played well as a team and beaten the opposition in front of them
What on earth else do you want?
Why be so down on them?

Not a popular sentiment but very true, no doubt the self-righteous will be along to put you back on message. The problem with a site like this is that a large majority only watch sport during major events and are instant experts. Your opening sentence is so very true but may get you on the naughty step!
TheWeeDonkey · 08/07/2021 11:39

Fair point @JudgeJ I wonder if OP has heard some of the chant Italian football fans have?

znaika · 08/07/2021 11:39

People are so twattish about England fans. They can be bad but by far the worst in the world cup in Russia were the Germans. The Mexicans and Spanish speakers of South America came in droves and were so uplifting amd wonderful. They brought with them so.much positive energy. The Brits were polite and apologetic. Lots of father son combinations.

The Germans shat everywhere- literally. I saw a German man splay is buttocks and shit in the middle of Arbat ( like Covent Garden) I saw an enormous topless women do the same outside the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour ( deeply disrespectful to Orthodoxy)They were shitting on Tverskaya on Nevsky Prospekt in St Pete's. They were everywhere splaying their enormous buttocks and shitting 💩

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 11:41

When people are saying that a player being awarded a penalty in a football match is the result of Brexit, they need help.

I was delighted when the result was phoned through to me at 10.30 if only because I knew it would annoy so many people and so much peripheral stuff would be attached to it! We've had the government, Brexit etc, can we have the chilly weather too?
SmashingBlouson · 08/07/2021 11:45

Lots of people are talking about there being a national day off on Monday if we win, so I'm surprised Boris is sounding like he cares, as plenty of people are going to be annoyed when he backtracks on how 'proud' he is and tells us all to roll into work with hangovers.
