To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

The English players, especially Sterling were being jostled at every opportunity. The penalty was examined by VAR and considered sound. If it wasn’t for the keeper, we’d have been at least 4 goals up. It’s crazy to say England didn’t deserve it. And our players are not thugs.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/07/2021 11:00

I watched some of the footage. Looked like a super spreader event to me. I wonder how many people will die because of it.

Chloemol · 08/07/2021 11:01

The only person who can change your mood is you, simple as that

Stop blaming it on everything ekse

Butterfly44 · 08/07/2021 11:01

On the other foot when singing God Save the Queen and having booing, how would you imagine one feels/thinks in response.

Booing an opposing team during their national anthem is a disgrace. Very disrespectful imo

CaptainThe95thRifles · 08/07/2021 11:02

@IcedPurple, @Hdhdjejdj you're both making assumptions which are erroneous and unfounded. People are entitled to different opinions, and that is mine. I can't imagine how you watched the match and came to the conclusions you have, but each to their own...

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 11:03

Anybody in their right mind would agree England were the far better team.

21Bee · 08/07/2021 11:03

I always wonder when people say ‘I’d move elsewhere if I could’ where they are thinking of moving to? It’s such a disingenuous thing to say, British people are some of the most privileged in the world whichever way you look at it.

Phantasmo · 08/07/2021 11:04

@the80sweregreat

VAR showed it was a penalty . There is always controversy around these decisions that affect a game as much as this. It's sad it overshadows the actual football ( plus it's karma for the ' hand of god ' incident many moons ago! 😂)
Does this mean the English will now finally get over the 1986 World Cup? Praise be to the Lord!
DdraigGoch · 08/07/2021 11:05

Most train drivers don't get that unless they've been doing it for a long time. Exh is one and they start on around £35k.
@Waxonwaxoff0
A qualified driver is on much more than that. Even the ones shuttling up and down the Isle of Wight are on £43k. Northern (one of the poorer-paying operators) pay £50k, while the intercity operators pay £67k (and they do take trainees on 'off the street', you don't have to have direct experience. The only operator which mandates a minimum amount of driving experience is Eurostar (£71k).

Market forces, supply and demand etc.

And this is why posters who claim football unites the country are mistaken. "Agree with me or you're mad". Nice mentality.

Your 'opinion' implies that the referees were corrupt as they ignored all the alleged (nonexistent) 'thuggery' from England.

And Denmark barely got near the ball for much of the game. Even allowing for the dodgy penalty, the scoreline was complimentary to them. Putting aside your obvious hatred for England, nobody who actually watched that match could think England did not deserve their win.

The Danish goalie was incredible wasn’t he?!
Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 11:08

I have no idea what you agenda is @CaptainThe95thRifles but if you want to argue that Denmark were the best team, crack on.

YouJustFoldItIn · 08/07/2021 11:08

we are supposed to glorify these thugs? Deliberately hurting opponents, even off rheball, seems to be part of the game. In any other sphere, common assault charges would be brought

I think you are thinking of Rugby. Or maybe boxing.

CornedBeef451 · 08/07/2021 11:09

I read somewhere that domestic violence increases dramatically when England play, whether they win or lose.

Drunk men fuelled by testosterone and football excitement love to batter their women. Fun times indeed.

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 11:09

He is amazing @Etinox. Helped by having a legendary father who played for a legendary team Grin.

Phantasmo · 08/07/2021 11:10

Schmeichel was definitely man of the match. Can't believe he's 34, feels like only 10 years ago that his dad was that age Smile

CaptainThe95thRifles · 08/07/2021 11:11

@IcedPurple that is your inference, not my implication. Referees have difficult jobs, it's never easy to see from the ground and VAR is far from perfect.

As for your second assertion, I watched the match and I don't agree, therefore you're wrong on that. You don't have a monopoly on opinion - we all evaluate situations in different ways. I won't continue to debate with someone who can't accept that people are entitled to different interpretations and opinions.

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 11:11

I hate all this ‘football is for thugs’ and all the shouting may hurt my precious kids ears. Its part of our working-class culture and a huge success story and for all its faults I love it.

IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 11:12

I remember him being a little boy.

Makes me feel old!

How long before his son is playing in goal for Denmark?

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 11:12

@CaptainThe95thRifles all the fancy talk in the world doesn’t change the fact you are wrong.

SerendipitySunshine · 08/07/2021 11:13

I am ashamed when I hear England fans booing other national anthems. It is rude and disrespectful - I think they should be asked to leave the stadium.

IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 11:14

So a highly experienced referee missed all this 'thuggery', but you saw it all on your tellybox?

Sure.

And yes, we all have different opinions but it seems obvious to me that yours is coloured by your hatred of England and wish to see them fail. Nobody who was even trying to watch this game objectively would doubt that England were by far the better team last night.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 08/07/2021 11:15

@Hdhdjejdj all the pithy little responses don't change the fact that this is a matter of opinion and not empiric fact, and therefore my opinion is just as valid as yours. However since you're not capable of understanding and acknowledging that...

Youreacockarentyou · 08/07/2021 11:15

God why are people so defensive about this? It's making a lot of people unhappy, too, they're allowed to talk about that.

If there was a legitimate reason other than the fact they just hate England, maybe! I’ve heard fans at other games booing the opposing teams national anthem in the tournament, & anyone with any football knowledge at all knows decisions aren’t always the right ones & all players dive & try to win the ball for their team. It’s only ‘disgusting & thuggish’ when it’s England though 😴 bloody predictable.

England played better by far & deserved the win. If you disagree with that I would assume you either didn’t watch the game or had your own prejudice about England & wanted them to lose before it even kicked off, & when they won you had to
Find any excuse as to why they didn’t deserve it.
