To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

100% agree with emilyfrost's first post.

I watched the game last night even though I'm not a football fan and shall do the same in the Final. There was a thread going last night while the game was being played: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4290957-Anyone-watching-the-alone-tonight?pg=5 which was full of hope and happiness and in complete contrast to this pile of doom and misery. For those of a happier disposition, there will be another thread for the final.

reprehensibleme · 08/07/2021 10:30

User135644, are you suggesting Danny Makkelie is in some way corrupt Hmm ?

@Bluedeblue

Well, I didn't want Brexit, but if we were still in the EU you wouldn't have even had your vaccine yet, what with all the red tape. That's been enough to convince me we are better alone. I don't think the Government is shit either. They have financially supported almost the entire population, through a global pandemic. Why don't you move if you hate it here?
Bullshit.

My DC working and residing in an EU country was vaccinated before his slightly older UK resident BiL and two months before any of his UK resident siblings.

The country he works in has also provided more generous support for workers, including proper sick pay for those isolating (a big gap in our support).
Across the EU every government has put in place support for the population - some more than us, some less than us. Some with better results some worse.

Do we really have to pretend everything we do is somehow exceptional and unique in the world? It rather negates the value of actual successes.

UnChatNoir · 08/07/2021 10:33

@MarshaBradyo

People from other countries probably have more of a reason to be proud.

Such a strange view and so much self loathing unless your user name reflects where you are.

Self-loathing 😂😂

Girl, bye.

@User135644

I cannot understand how anyone could possibly begrudge us a major sporting tournament final

I don't like to see cheats prosper.

So right until Sterling's (alleged) dive you were supporting England?

I don't believe that for one second. You are just looking for excuses. Not to mention that you won't find a single team where no player has ever been guilty of cheating.

Who will you be supporting on Sunday? If you hate 'cheats' then are you 100% confident that no Italian player has ever got a dodgy penalty?

nocturnalcatfreetogoodhome · 08/07/2021 10:37

I was absolutely gutted.

Watching grown men cry on social media is my favourite pass time.

a8mint · 08/07/2021 10:39

YANBU
The amount t of deliberate fouling that goes on is disgraceful and we are supposed to glorify these thugs? Deliberately hurting opponents, even off rheball, seems to be part of the game. In any other sphere, common assault charges would be brought
No, not me

savagebaggagemaster · 08/07/2021 10:39
@emilyfrost This government are about as competent as a bunch of brain damaged hamsters rolling around in their own faeces. How on earth can you be proud of anything they do?!
This is offensive towards hamsters...

DandelionCloud · 08/07/2021 10:42

I wish they hadn’t won too. There’s going to be a right hassle during the next match. Loads of yobbish behaviour and people waking my DC up by screaming at the telly with their windows open.

YouJustFoldItIn · 08/07/2021 10:46

Who said it was your job to make OP feel better? But going out of your way to make a bitchy comment - what's the point in that?

Er, well the person I quoted above kind of suggested it was, didn't they? I am supposed to listen indulgently while the OP go off on an Anti English rant and admit they wish we'd lost the football because they are cross about Brexit and the Tories, but I must 'be kind' by not mentioning that bitterness and negativity and a need for vengeance are not traits that aid anyone in finding inner peace and a healthy mindset?

Anyone who can't stand up to such comments shouldn't be saying things on the internet that blatantly invite them, and insult millions of people at the same time.

going out of your way to make a bitchy comment - what's the point in that?

People who go out of their way to do such things are usually the bitter, negative ones.*

People like the OP who go out of the way to antagonise people and bring down an otherwise happy mood and a spirit of togetherness are usually the bitter negative ones, I find.

It's hilarious and a bit ironic that I am expected to react in nothing less than an indulgent, magnanimous and conciliatory fashion or be seen as a negative and 'nasty' 'bitch'.

Good job there isn't a war on. The country is finding some cheer in what has been a terrible year for so many nations. If people can unite in celebration, if only for a few days, then I will take it. It is a timely reminder that sometimes a nation HAS to come together in troubled times. Let us enjoy that it is chosing to do so, in a brief happier time.

Are tachograph rules changing OP? Do you have a link?

By the way, England certainly was not the only country with ill-mannered fans. A lot of booing went on, all over the tournament.

Lemonmelonsun · 08/07/2021 10:53

I dont agree with the booing either but its panto....
Just take it lightly, I heard much booing at england players yesterday from Danish fans its funny!

CaptainThe95thRifles · 08/07/2021 10:54

I agree, although I don't think the English team deserved to win - that penalty was absurd, and the English were diving and shoving all over the place like the thugs they are. The behaviour of the fans is disgraceful, aggressive and divisive. I will not unite with people who behave like that.

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 10:54

Everybody I have spoken to this morning has been full of joy and excitement.

Hdhdjejdj · 08/07/2021 10:55

@CaptainThe95thRifles Are you kidding? We were by far the better team. Anyone with an iota of football knowledge would agree.

Because of a shortage of HGV drivers (thanks Brexit!) the maximum working/driving time has been increased. Google will have a link.

utter nonsense, you just believe the lies coming out of this corrupt government to cover for their massive mistakes handling this pandemic. I have been fully vaccinated with two vaccines in the EU before friends of similar age in the UK as there is such a long gap between the two doses and my 16 year old has already received his first dose. The infection rate in my country is much lower than the UK as is the death rate from covid and I can get free covid tests this summer if I want to travel. There was no shortage of PPE, healthcare professionals did not die and there was at no time any shortage of ITU beds. The EMA approved the vaccines and after a slow start, the vaccination rate is much higher than in the UK in most EU member states. In many EU countries people can choose which vaccine to have. And since you asked, I hate this government and brexit so I moved but I am lucky to have dual citizenship so I can do that. Unfortunately this option has been removed for many who don't own EU passports.

God why are people so defensive about this? It's making a lot of people unhappy, too, they're allowed to talk about that.

I agree the penalty was dodgy but I don't know how you can say England didn't deserve to win. They were all over Denmark, who barely got a shot on goal.

And as for the England players behaving like 'thugs', did you actually watch the match? I don't think you did.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 08/07/2021 10:59

It’s poor. Why would you boo another teams anthem. The game is a joke.
