I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

I don't think booing national anthems is that big of a deal. It's all part of the theatre. Think of it like a pantomime. It's part of the fun. Shock

it really is not.
It's literally everything that is wrong with football. Which is a SPORT, in case you forgot.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 10:10

@wed8pril

I don't care if they win on Sunday, but if they do I'm not looking forward to it being a twenty minute lead item on the news for the next month. You'd think nothing else was happening, or that England wasn't only one part of the UK.
Complain about the media then, not about the team or players, it's not their fault.
Faultymain5 · 08/07/2021 10:11

@ancientgran

How is the poster 'literally' being 'made' to live in Britain?

Is someone 'literally' preventing her from getting on a plane?

If she hasn't got the right to go where the plane is going someone will stop her getting on, airlines don't like the hassle of having to return people home. If she gets there and doesn't have a right to live there she will get sent back.

Right! It’s as though people believe England is the only place with immigration rules
Proudboomer · 08/07/2021 10:11

The England players are not overpaid when they put on the England shirt. It is their clubs that pay them big money. They get an appearance fee for playing for their country which since 2007 has been donated to England’s football association which in turn uses the money to support charities. The women’s team is paid exactly the same as the men’s as well who again donate the money.
So fuck off with your overpaid shit as it is clear you know nothing of international football.

And stop with the down cry of our penalty if you are not going to mention the free kick that gave Denmark their goal was equally as questionable.

The booing is bad but we are not the only country who does so but at least our fans don’t throw bananas at the black players which is still rife in some European football games.
But I don’t like the kneeling and for that booing I don’t condemn as you are entitled to show your displeasure at something you don’t agree with.

Now look at England’s team. No one can say our team is not diverse.. black or white the fans will scream just as loudly for Sterling as they will kane. When Denmark does even have a black player.

Not everything is great about English football but there is also a lot right with it.
@Stillherenotgoneanywhere

My Irish relatives who happen to reside here in England are literally hating their lives right now. Odd mentality.
I'm half Irish, half ME, raised between Leitrim and Portsmouth, have a European DH and though I support England (have no one else I could support really!), there is certainly vitriol within the fanbase- those that consider themselves proper English football fans seem to think they are superior to the other England fans, mostly based on ethnicity/nationality.

A man in the pub last week asked me if I would have supported India if they got through, and couldn't seem to understand that despite being brown, I am not, in fact, Indian.

I think convincing themselves that all the other countries are against them provokes comraderie and they position themselves as the gritty underdogs vs. Nasty Europe.

redcarbluecar · 08/07/2021 10:13

Take your point but, embarrassing fan/politician behaviour aside, this is a great team and manager who are worth supporting all the way.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 10:13

And the fact it might be excruciating for racist/xenophobic haters of the English from any country in the British Isles or elsewhere for years to come makes me want the England team to win more. May it remind them of their pathetic racism every day.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 08/07/2021 10:14

Politics hasn't crept into football AT ALL.

So naive.

wed8pril · 08/07/2021 10:14

Never said it was.

VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 10:17

The booing is disrespectful.
It isn't the majority though. A minority can still be very vocal though.

Let's celebrate that for however long it lasts, disparate sections of society can unite in positivity and happiness. Let's celebrate that such a thing (unity) is possible.
Let's enjoy a brief good news story when many households have loved ones no longer here to enjoy such moments.

Lokdok · 08/07/2021 10:17

@emilyfrost

Oh calm down and stop being so miserable.

I’m proud of this country and I’m proud of this government. If you’re not and you think it’s so shit nobody’s making you live here.

Hahahaha!!!!!! You’re trolling, right!? What idiot would be proud of this government. And she can’t move, Brexit put a stop to that. Confused
RolloTomassi · 08/07/2021 10:18

YABU. I cannot understand how anyone could possibly begrudge us a major sporting tournament final. Weird. If you're so against it switch off, I'm sure Covid will be back to the dominate the headlines soon enough.

I don't like to see cheats prosper.

Proudboomer · 08/07/2021 10:22

For the first time in 55 years these men have given us a chance football greatness again. Even if we don’t bring it home I am proud to support these young men.

Viviennemary · 08/07/2021 10:24

There's already been a long thread on this. Stop being a killjoy.

So what about Denmark’s goal from the dodgy free kick given. Should no one have won? If you discount both dodgy decisions we still win on our first goal which has no controversy
HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 10:25

Yeah I'm just really pleased they have got to a major final in my lifetime really, with such a nice positive team. Though obviously I'd prefer we win the whole thing, it would be no shame to lose to this Italian side who have beaten everybody.

Maverick197 · 08/07/2021 10:26

I really wish the team well, decent blokes- just look at what Marcus Rashford did during lockdown to secure free school meals. Gareth Southgate is coming across like a true leader with all the right values unlike Johnson.

Gareth Southgate is highlighting the enormous gap between a decent leader and a corrupt lying one like Johnson. The England team is not doing Johnson and his government any favors no matter how much the tories will try to jump on the bandwagon.

UnChatNoir · 08/07/2021 10:27

@CoralSparkles

If you hate England so much then why do you live here? Move to another country or stop whinging. People from other countries are proud of their country. Also, every country has done shameful things. England isn’t evilHmm
People from other countries probably have more of a reason to be proud.
aSofaNearYou · 08/07/2021 10:28

Haven't watched any of it so haven't seen any of the booing but I totally agree about the Covid consideration. I've never been one to engage in whataboutery when exemptions are made to the restrictions.... but... this just seems like a really disproportionately large scale and irresponsible thing to be encouraged at such a serious and pinnacle time for the pandemic. Plus, the rest of us have nothing any where on this scale.

Yeah, I was really hoping we would be kicked out last night. I don't want cases sky rocketing and another lockdown just because of the people who take this so extremely seriously. It's a "major" tournament, don't you know!

MarshaBradyo · 08/07/2021 10:29

Such a strange view and so much self loathing unless your user name reflects where you are.

HumunaHey · 08/07/2021 10:29

@YouJustFoldItIn

Yes, and your comment will make OP feel tonnes better. Bravo!

So it's my job to make her feel better when she's just trashed the country and most of the people in it? Why? I'm not responsible for how she feels. My point stands. People who choose to dwell on the negative instead of looking for positives in situations have poorer outcomes in the MH and their lives in general.

Funny because the negative and bitter person sounds like you and not the OP.

Please do explain how. I am all ears. Find something I've said on this thread and explain how it's negative and bitter. Go ahead. I'll wait. You know I haven't, and your comment is in that school playground vein of 'takes one to know one.'

Trust me, right now I have absolutely zero to be negative or bitter about, on any level.

Who said it was your job to make OP feel better? But going out of your way to make a bitchy comment - what's the point in that?

People who go out of their way to dosuch things are usually the bitter, negative ones.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 10:30

If you don't want cheats to prosper then you won't be supporting Italy in the final. Did you see what Immobile did in the QF that was roundly condemned across the world?

What exactly have England done except gone down a bit easy in the area? Have you ever had a 6'2" Dane barging your shoulders, pulling your shirt, kicking at your ankles when you are knackered and have been playing football for two hours? Do you know that refs don't even see unfair challenges unless the players fall over?

VerticalHorizon · 08/07/2021 10:30

Football support has many faults.
But football itself doesn't have any when you give a ball to two small children of any race, any sex. THAT is the true beauty of football. It unites.
