To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

@Waxonwaxoff0 you sure he's telling the truth? I know a few TOC's you earn slightly less for the first 2 years but not by that much.

When I started 17 years ago our company was paying not much less than that!

User135644 · 08/07/2021 09:01

@Babygotblueyes

I think it was all over for me when that little girl was ridiculed. I was heartened to hear about the fundraising, but the lack of sportsmanship by a minority of the fans is upsetting. You dont have to boo the other team to cheer yours on.
When your players are divers and cheats, what can you expect from the fans?

The lack of sportsmanship is endemic with the England football team.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/07/2021 09:02

Southgate and the current squad represent a modern progressive multicultural Britain. Many of them are outspoken about this government and racism and poverty. There's lots I dislike about England and almost everything about this government but the England team give me hope and I wish them every possible success.

Yes this. ^❤️

morepizzapls · 08/07/2021 09:03

@User135644 penalties like that have been given often in the last year. and sometimes they're not.

sometimes they work in your favour - sometimes they dont. harry kane should of been awarded a penalty before that so it evens out in the end even if some people dont think sterling's should of been.

england were the better team in the end and deserved the win. and even if you dont agree it doesnt really matter - they are still in the final.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 09:04

I live with three men who usually loath football and don't follow it at all , but they are happy today that England have made a final!
Because it makes a bloody change ..

It's just been on the radio that the football may be behind a rise of Coronavirus infections in men during the last 2 weeks.

It annoys me that social distancing etc. have been cast to the wind during this tournament.

MarshaBradyo · 08/07/2021 09:04

@EveryoneIsThere

Not read all the thread.

We live in a democracy - everyone (almost) is eligible to stand for election. If people 'hate' the government then why don't they do something about it and help change it. Even if you don't want to become a MP you can still get involved in local politics.

Look at the number of people who didn't even bother voting when the UK was deciding to stay or leave the EEC -

Too many People love to moan and complain but can't be bothered actually doing anything about it.

Totally. Get it together and make change instead of self indulgent moaning about how ashamed you are.

I’ve voted either way but if the left can’t frame its own country in a positive way it will always lose. I’d prefer them not to get decimated in very time so stop the I’m so ashamed wailing. I find it embarrassing anyway given relative wealth to world.

So left get it together, be more positive and try to skie what a better future could be. Rather than moan.

JassyRadlett · 08/07/2021 09:05

Well, I didn't want Brexit, but if we were still in the EU you wouldn't have even had your vaccine yet, what with all the red tape. That's been enough to convince me we are better alone.

God, they really have done a number on people haven’t they? It’s extraordinary.

If we’d still been in the EU we would have had no more compulsion, and no less ability, to join the EU vaccination arrangements as we did outside it.

Handy tip: if Boris Johnson or his foot soldiers tell you something is true, look for a couple of independent sources before swallowing it hook, line and sinker.

User135644 · 08/07/2021 09:05

For kicking someone and falling to the floor? Yes, he's used to getting pens for this kind of thing in the PL, but he's still a cheat. If you want to cheer for that then good luck to you.

I'd like to think so, I get child maintenance and we have a good relationship considering we're divorced. He earns £55k now so not far off 60!

"Well, I didn't want Brexit, but if we were still in the EU you wouldn't have even had your vaccine yet, what with all the red tape"

The UK could have followed the same course of vaccine action if it were an EU member:
None of these successes can be chalked up to Brexit. As the chief executive of the MHRA swiftly pointed out, Mr Hancock was wrong to say that the UK could approve the vaccine early because it was no longer subject to EU rules. The MHRA’s decision was taken in accordance with the relevant EU legislation, which allows member states to grant temporary authorisation for a medicinal product in response to the spread of infectious diseases (among others). [1] This legislation still applies to the UK until the end of the transition period. Any EU member state could have used the same provision of the legislation to approve the vaccine. They decided not to for political and technical reasons, not legal ones.

Similarly, the member states were in no way obliged to take part in the EU’s joint vaccine procurement scheme. The EU has very limited competences for public health under its founding treaties: it can take action only to “support, coordinate or supplement the actions of the Member States”. The EU member states in this case voluntarily decided to opt into the joint procurement scheme. If one or more of them had decided to follow the UK’s path and procure its own vaccines, no one would have stopped them.

Italy were sure doing a lot of diving in the match against Spain. If you think it's just England that does it then you must be blind.
thinkingaboutLangCleg · 08/07/2021 09:10

I’m delighted to see people celebrating and I’m glad something has cheered them up in this miserable time.

But I agree with Yellow — I’m glad they won as the played the best game but I hate how this government - of whom I could not be less proud - will misappropriate the win as their ‘will’ or doing (all whilst ignoring the rising Covid cases and blaming the wider population for acting irresponsibly).

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 09:10

The governments and other countries and EUFA have allowed this tournament to go ahead, so those going on about the virus should turn their anger on the authorities who allowed it to go ahead for the best part of a month instead.
I do agree all these sporting events should have been put back another year , but it wasn't!
No point blaming the footballers

I don't think the Government is shit either. They have financially supported almost the entire population, through a global pandemic. Why don't you move if you hate it here?
Oh dear, you've fallen for another of Johnson's more blatant lies. Absolutely nothing about being in the EU would have prevented us from getting the vaccine at the time we did.
TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 08/07/2021 09:11

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

I know, OP.

This horrible government. It's their fault England won. Any other government would have taken measures to prevent this.

Its that tory sunak that has said it was a soft penalty, in other words, england were lucky.
It's Labour who have come out and said it was clearly a penalty and Kane did a brilliant job converting it after a world class save,

I found sunak not backing the english football team nauseating, how dare he!

and don't get me started on the cut in UC of £20 per week, thats going to decimate familes, these people really are scum as are their suppoerters

HA and every other team dont do the same thing!? perleasssse

and actually, I do believe harry kane had a genuine penalty appeal there but each to their own. I will be cheering them on in the final because I'm not a miserable bastard.

Stop moaning and get in power then.

If all the left do is feel ashamed of U.K. then you’re in the ghost lands for decades.

At least Blair brought some positivity. What do you want talk about that rather than how shit you find everything. No impetus whatsoever.

EU ain'tfar behind the UK, have far lower cases of delta, far lower death rates - on average and have opened up far sooner, especially on international travel.

I was watching the tour de france yesterday, hoards of Belgium fans cheering on their stage winner, no english their supporting our riders.

But apparently we are doing sooooo much better - sheepels.

It should never have gone ahead and now the UK has to face the consequences.
