To wish England hadn't won (almost)

littlegreybird · 08/07/2021 05:48

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

OP posts:
theDudesmummy · 08/07/2021 08:46

I am English but left England last year because of the government/Brexit. I still felt happy that England got through last night. Not for the abominable Tories, for all the people who felt happy about it.

By the way, there is still somewhere you can move to with no limitations. Look just over to the west...

HildegardeCrowe · 08/07/2021 08:46

God what an ignorant post @wanttomarryamillionaire. Rude and it’s not what the OP said at all. Views like yours scare the shit out of me - do you sing Rule Britannia in the shower?

YouJustFoldItIn · 08/07/2021 08:47

Yes, and your comment will make OP feel tonnes better. Bravo!

So it's my job to make her feel better when she's just trashed the country and most of the people in it? Why? I'm not responsible for how she feels. My point stands. People who choose to dwell on the negative instead of looking for positives in situations have poorer outcomes in the MH and their lives in general.

Funny because the negative and bitter person sounds like you and not the OP.

Please do explain how. I am all ears. Find something I've said on this thread and explain how it's negative and bitter. Go ahead. I'll wait. You know I haven't, and your comment is in that school playground vein of 'takes one to know one.'

Trust me, right now I have absolutely zero to be negative or bitter about, on any level.

Threewheeler1 · 08/07/2021 08:47

How can anyone be 'proud' of this government??
Led by a man who said "let the bodies pile high" Angry

Millions of people didn't qualify for furlough support and have barely coped during this pandemic, my family members among them.

Bluethrough · 08/07/2021 08:48

@Cam2020

Get a grip. Honestly, you'd thinking Boris Johnson is Dr Mengle the way people go on.
Well, i guess Mengele also said "let the bodies pile high" too?
babbaloushka · 08/07/2021 08:48

Hmm I am a football fan but I agree OP, this year has a different feel, and I don't love it. The nationalists have come crawling out the woodwork and are stirring things up, fans are absolutely trashing venues and abuse of the opposition irl and on social media is rife.

You're right about the booing too, what is the point. I maybe understood it against Germany because of the rivalry with the two teams, but against Denmark, and all they've gone through this tournament?

Livelovebehappy · 08/07/2021 08:49

Give over. The only thing I feel sad about is that there are fun sponges like you who literally hate anyone being happy, and turn any bit of pleasure we have into a negative. I live next to a primary school, and to see and hear the children this morning singing and chatting about last nights win is heart warming, after what’s been a pretty crappy yea4 for them with very little to be happy about. You make your life sound so grim, so if I was you I would move heaven and earth to remove those boundaries you have which prevent you from moving abroad. Life’s too short to be so miserable that a football game win pushes you over the edge.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 08/07/2021 08:50

‘seeing people like Priti Patel and Boris trying to get in on the action (so fake btw) and dimwit people concluding it's because of Brexit is a bit sickening tbh.’

I sincerely hope Priti Patel is not trying to jump on the bandwagon after she encouraged fans to demotivate the team by booing them taking the knee. She’s the perfect mix of spiteful and stupid.

In any case this demonstrates even more why the team have nothing to do with this awful government or the anti-woke warriors who are desperate to squeeze their newly discovered word ‘woke’ into everything as if it’s going out of fashion. It’s embarrassing.

This team have nothing to do with these people. They are great role models and I’m proud of them. I hope they go all the way. Yes some fans are thugs but most of us are decent people not cabinet ministers, anti-woke warriors or post match wife beaters.

EveryoneIsThere · 08/07/2021 08:50

Not read all the thread.

We live in a democracy - everyone (almost) is eligible to stand for election. If people 'hate' the government then why don't they do something about it and help change it. Even if you don't want to become a MP you can still get involved in local politics.

Look at the number of people who didn't even bother voting when the UK was deciding to stay or leave the EEC -

Too many People love to moan and complain but can't be bothered actually doing anything about it.

KTB19 · 08/07/2021 08:51

I live in Australia so I don't really follow UK sports - except for big match games and then quite suddenly I become patriotic again. I find there is nothing like hearing your National Anthem playing and the supporters singing along, to make you feel proud (well, it does me anyway).

I am so happy that we won and I am really proud of the England team. I didnt stay up to watch the game but when I woke up this morning and saw the results, it was brilliant news to wake up too.

I know football isnt everyones cup of tea and I have heard people mention COVID and lack of social distancing, but aside from that, it's lovely to see the celebrations and how happy everyone is - it's a much needed boost.

I really hope that England win the final and whilst I wont be able to stay awake for it, those results will be the first thing I check when I wake up Monday morning. But in the meantime, I shall play Fat Les and the 'Vindaloo' song to get me in the mood. :D

ancientgran · 08/07/2021 08:51

How is the poster 'literally' being 'made' to live in Britain?

Is someone 'literally' preventing her from getting on a plane?

If she hasn't got the right to go where the plane is going someone will stop her getting on, airlines don't like the hassle of having to return people home. If she gets there and doesn't have a right to live there she will get sent back.

Bythemillpond · 08/07/2021 08:51

littlegreybird

you’re choosing to be sad because we won a football game

No I'm not. I'm saying my mood isn't great anyway and this event, which not that long ago would have been a source of joy to me, is just making the whole situation worse. There's a difference

I think you have more problems than England winning. You sound depressed.

Why would you be sharing your commute with tired lorry drivers. Have we stopped enforcing breaks after they have been driving for a number of hours

All those who want to leave the country
What is stopping you? I am sure a lot of other countries would welcome you if you are too good for here

Babygotblueyes · 08/07/2021 08:52

I think it was all over for me when that little girl was ridiculed. I was heartened to hear about the fundraising, but the lack of sportsmanship by a minority of the fans is upsetting. You dont have to boo the other team to cheer yours on.

suckingonchillidogs · 08/07/2021 08:53

But just think how pleased some of you will be if they lose in the final - better get the Pringles and cheese & pineapple hedgehogs ready 🙄

NashvilleQueen · 08/07/2021 08:54

Southgate and the current squad represent a modern progressive multicultural Britain. Many of them are outspoken about this government and racism and poverty. There's lots I dislike about England and almost everything about this government but the England team give me hope and I wish them every possible success.

sadperson16 · 08/07/2021 08:54

@IcedPurple, she has literally had many chances removed from her.

YouJustFoldItIn · 08/07/2021 08:55

And before someone tells me to leave if I don’t like it. Well I would, if my right to do so hadn’t been taken away from me.

Gosh, it's almost as if June 2016 to December 2020 never happened.

I am English but left England last year because of the government/Brexit.

Do me a favour, explain to the poster above how that worked, will you? She somehow got the idea that she'd been imprisoned on an island from the day the referendum result was in. She confused Brexit with the divide between North and South Korea, poor love. And I thought it was the Leavers who were supposed to be thick.

TiddyAndFletch · 08/07/2021 08:56

I couldn't care less about the result. I don't wish the team ill, but I don't wish them well - it's simply not important to me.

Got woken up in the small hours by revellers on their way home from the pub singing football songs, which was annoying. Would they like it if I walked past their house singing loudly at gone midnight the next time I had some good news?

IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 08:58

Yeah, but nobody is 'literally' forcing her to stay in 'this godforsaken island' are they?

If she has the right to live and work in a country she can still do so. She no longer has the automatic right to work in an EU country (other than ROI) but can still go there any time she chooses, Covid aside. Her right, or lack thereof, to live in the 200 or so other countries in the world remain unchanged.

So no, she is not 'literally' being made to stay in Britain. That is nonsense.

morepizzapls · 08/07/2021 08:58

pretty mean spirited thread to be honest.

that win and how well they have done will stay with those players and manager for the rest of their lives.

one of my family members is a professional footballer and to see people "almost" wishing they hadnt won is really disheartening. he would be gutted - fortunately too many people will be out there genuinely celebrating their success to pay much attention to the few negative ones.

IcedPurple · 08/07/2021 08:58
@IcedPurple, she has literally had many chances removed from her.
Which is literally not the same thing as 'literally' being made to stay in Britain.

Bluedeblue · 08/07/2021 08:59

Well, I didn't want Brexit, but if we were still in the EU you wouldn't have even had your vaccine yet, what with all the red tape. That's been enough to convince me we are better alone. I don't think the Government is shit either. They have financially supported almost the entire population, through a global pandemic. Why don't you move if you hate it here?

User135644 · 08/07/2021 08:59

I know just about nothing about football but I believe the ref or whoever watched the video and agreed a penalty should be given.Do you know better than them?

It wasn't clear enough to overrule the ref because there was some contact, but Sterling was already diving down like a sack of shit. He conned the ref.

I'd be embarrassed to celebrate that goal.

JassyRadlett · 08/07/2021 08:59

It’s so ignorant to think that living in the UK in the 21 century is some sort of terrible thing. Yes, nothings perfect, and mistakes have been made, but these negative comments are just so naive.

Yes chaps, button up and be grateful for your lot! It’s not Zimbabwe, how dare you criticise and point out flaws!

OP, I think this England team and manager are actually a lovely counterpoint to the prevailing narrative. Showing you don’t have to be venal, corrupt and pandering to succeed. That principles and decency not only still have a place in our society but that they can prevail.

I missed kickoff yesterday but understood that there was at last no booing when the team took the knee. Change is slow. But this team are role models that we desperately need.

gardeninggirl68 · 08/07/2021 08:59

So many people are loving being miserable

It's funny watching them trying to spread the misery on here too..... but the football fans, even those just getting swept along with it all, are having NONE of it and are putting the misery guts back in their place

On EVERY thread. Very amusing
