To wish England hadn't won (almost)

I'm not a football fan but someone who tends to get swept along during big tournaments and a few years ago would have been thrilled by last night's result.

This year I hate it. I think the team and manager seem great, but the booing during the other teams' national anthems is sickening and makes me utterly ashamed. Then you just know it'll be jumped on by Johnson (already has) and the victory, or even getting this far, will become part of his populism. Then there's all the covid cases that will be spread due to all the mixing in pubs etc, more than would have been the case anyway.

I just feel nothing for this country anymore after the events of the last few years. Latest bit of shit news is that my daily commute will now be shared by exhausted lorry drivers who won't have had breaks thanks to Brexit, so that's a cheery thought.

When is anything good going to happen that isn't sullied by this utterly shit governement?

WTF *@MarshaBradyo* Can't you read?
Yep a load of moaning stuff by the looks of it.
Bluethrough · 08/07/2021 09:20

... its your party that ain't getting behind the english team not mine

Bluethrough · 08/07/2021 09:20

yep can't read.

IDontReadEyebrows · 08/07/2021 09:20

The team and the manager deserve how far they’ve come so far in the competition but my god, the booing from the fans at taking the knee and the opposing team’s national anthem is disgusting. As is the likes of Johnson and Patel leaping on the bandwagon of the team’s success with the attitudes they’ve displayed. The anti German sentiment from the media before that game was vile too. Don’t get me started on the hateful comments on social media against the German child who was crying at the end of the match.

I want England to win because the team deserve it but my god, many, many of the fans do not.

derxa · 08/07/2021 09:21

Since their player had an incident they've been given half the games
I don't know what you mean by this.
Anyway I'm a Scotland fan and never support England no matter how lovely the team is. It wasn't a penalty. Grin

Funny yes I’m sure they don’t want them to win

Oh hang on.

Sunak thanks asked about economic bounce this morning feeling positive is part of it.

You have a very weak point if you think your party is keener for England to win.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 09:21

Yes, I agree that all the sporting events should have been put back , but they were not
It's done now though , it's not something that can be undone.
The coronavirus arguments will run for years about all of these decisions!

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 09:24

VAR showed it was a penalty .
There is always controversy around these decisions that affect a game as much as this.
It's sad it overshadows the actual football
( plus it's karma for the ' hand of god ' incident many moons ago! 😂)

Livelovebehappy · 08/07/2021 09:25

I love the UK. I’ve travelled extensively in Europe, and we have so much more going for us here than in other countries. It’s not perfect, but show me a country that is. I’m happy this morning that there’s something to celebrate following a pretty crap year. And no-one can knock me off my perch of positivity!

User135644 · 08/07/2021 09:25

But people are cheering for something they know should have been cancelled or put back and is just making a pandemic worse. It's wrong.
SoupDragon · 08/07/2021 09:25

I was watching the tour de france yesterday, hoards of Belgium fans cheering on their stage winner, no english their supporting our riders.

Possibly because Belgium is on the Amber list.

rooarsome · 08/07/2021 09:27

The booing and a shining a laser pen at Schmeichel's face was disgusting behaviour.

It might have been karma if England were playing Argentina.

To dive and cheat like that against a Denmark team who saw their own team mate collapse and nearly die in front of them is not right.

ShitPoetryClub · 08/07/2021 09:30

I think football has improved massively from the thuggish mess it was in the 80s and 90s. This team seem like nice humble people.

There's a lot wrong with the UK but there's a lot we do right as well. I'm no fan of Boris (can't abide him) but even our right wing government is actually more left wing than some "socialist" countries. The furlough scheme was amazing and I say that as someone whose entire family works in the NHS and didn't benefit from furlough at all.
Other things to love; the sheer variety of food available here due to our multiculturalism. The education system that treats each child as an individual. Sports clubs and facilities with low subs, making high quality sport available to all to participate in, national lottery funding has helped so much here.....see how it has improved our Olympic success.
The countryside and beaches are beautiful, easy to access and free. The community spirit, a family in our town lost their home in a fire, the town rebuilt and refunished it for them, just ordinary people pulling together.
People are generally good drivers, my cousin is a police cop in America and couldn't believe that drivers here "flash" each other to let them go ahead, he was astounded. There's a right turn near me where you have to rely on the goodwill of others to let you out and you never have to wait long.
I have faith in the Police here. My family are mixed race and experienced outright disgusting racism from the French police a couple of years ago. My DD (who appears white) worked as a nanny in Italy and was horrified at the brazen racism there as well (one of the house rules was that she must not talk to black/North African people). Hmm
Our universities are great (world leaders in many fields) and even with student loans they are accessible.

We don't have poisonous snakes or spiders.
On balance these more to love than to hate.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 08/07/2021 09:32

YABU, I want us to win more than ever because the team and manager are a good bunch these days.

I think not wanting something incredibly positive like this to happen because Johnson will take advantage of it is a very strange attitude indeed. And there are racists and idiotic nationalists everywhere, especially in the rest of Europe!

I expect if the vaccinations succeed in suppressing Covid, Johnson will take advantage of that also. Would you prefer lots more people die instead? As long as the government don't take advantage, that's the main thing Hmm

I think most people are fairly sickened by Patel and Johnson basking in reflected glory, TBH anyway.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 09:32

No, it's not sporting to dive around.
I'm not a football fan , but it is what it is eh?
They will have to play better on Sunday.! Italy are very good.

morepizzapls · 08/07/2021 09:33

@User135644 You are being absolutely ridiculous and trying to use any circumstances, even something as sad as what happened to Christian Erikson, to fit your agenda.

You have also now suggested that anyone who is cheering the team on should be ashamed of themselves because the games should have been cancelled. What a load of bollocks.

Sat waiting with baited breath for your next reason s to why the England fans and team are awful.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 08/07/2021 09:34

I get what you mean, OP.
I really like the team and Gareth Southgate...the fans, not so much - and the govt, not at all!
(On a separate point, imagine being that knob of a tory MP who announced he would boycott the England games because of the team taking the knee..Grin Hmm

Bubblespider · 08/07/2021 09:38

Hand of god, karma, "the hurt" , "55 years of humiliation" are all expressions that just should not be used. It's not a particularly sportsmanlike way of thinking!

derxa · 08/07/2021 09:41

@Ilovegreentomatoes

Come on England!!Football
The only honest poster on the thread.
Wroxie · 08/07/2021 09:42

I agree. I think that PLAYING sports is great - I play tennis and cycle and would happily play football in the park or whatever - but the obsession with professional sports is a fucking embarrassment. When someone uses "we" instead of "they" when referring to a team of entitled, overpaid children, led by men so rich and disconnected they aren't even from the same planet and who wouldn't bother to piss on the people who follow their teams if they were on fire, it's the most cringeworthy thing imaginable.

I think football exists to absorb all the good-will and positivity that could, in a decent society, be put to use to make the world a better place. Instead, people get their endorphins hopped up after a football win and can feel like they love their country while they then go on to actively destroy it by voting for tories.

That Rashford fella is of course OK but he's the exception that proves the rule

Stillherenotgoneanywhere · 08/07/2021 09:44

Well, Im from the uk but live in Ireland. I’m delighted to see England win but god almighty you can’t show any happiness or even admit to supporting the English team here.
The vitriol is massive. I’m in work listening to it now. All cheering now for Italy now. I’m keeping my mouth shut and my head down because I have no choice but to get on here and if you bite back you’re a stuck up Brit.
It sounds such a silly small thing - which team people are shouting for - but it’s the sentiment behind it and what it stands for. Then it leads on to other reasons to hate the British, none of which are anything I’ve done!! These are the same people who support Man U or suchlike the rest of the time and know more about British culture than their own which is mad. It’s hard to live amongst the drip drip of dislike.
I’m so homesick when I see the pictures of everyone celebrating.
Rant over.
Enjoy it people. Wish I was there.

Pinuporc · 08/07/2021 09:44

But people are cheering for something they know should have been cancelled or put back and is just making a pandemic worse. It's wrong.

The fact that there were full stadiums of 60k fans does feel quite dangerous in terms of the pandemic , and I wouldnt want to be part of that crowd, but since the game is actually going on then I'm going to support our national side. (I dont support a football team normally but I enjoy the world cup and euros - as much as an england fan can enjoy their games!)

EasterIssland · 08/07/2021 09:47

haven't read but I agree with op

"The React study, which tested more than 47,000 volunteers across England between 24 June and 5 July, confirms a "substantial third wave of infections".
And the men were 30% more likely than the women to test positive for Covid.
The infections had not translated into a large number of people in hospital or dying, however, the study found.
And vaccinated men and women were much less likely than others to catch the virus.
"It could be that watching football is resulting in men having more social activity than usual," report author Prof Steven Riley said."

Im Spanish , I love football and I was wishing on Tuesday they didnt win to avoid the rise in cases all this is going to bring. but ey! when restrictions come... it was worth it cuz it's football despite many of those celebrating it dont care about football.

Creamsoda77 · 08/07/2021 09:48

Football is awful, dont get it, the players are overpaid, arrogant, the fans are loud and obnoxious, its just horrible!
