I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

@DismantledKing

And anyone who uses the word ‘sheeple’ is a fucking idiot.
Can't add anything other than - hell yes

@BumbleFlump

Football is a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable....a temporary distraction from the massive rent, bills, mortgage etc that people have to pay. It’s like a drug. Temporary high. That’s why I used the term “sheeple” because people don’t get the wider function of football in society. The big picture.
What a load of tripe. I'm neither poor or miserable, have paid off mortgage years ago. Have plenty of money in the bank.

Why don't you enlighten us all with what part football plays in society? The big picture as you put it.

Your post is patronising and condescending.

@BumbleFlump is far too fluffy for you. I'd suggest TheDementor, much more apt.

Meh. Happy for the temporary high over here.

I get the ‘big picture’. Bit patronising to think people don’t, but we’ll leave that pass, eh? I’m sure you weren’t suggesting football fans are all ignorant eejits. But how can you not look at those players’ faces - and the coaches, and the crowds of fans - and not be even a tiny bit moved?

Whether you personally approve of the nation’s drug of choice is neither here nor there.

gillysSong · 08/07/2021 00:41

Fireworks bugged me as was just falling to sleep, full of flu.
It's not the football it's waiting for the threads dh has gone to clebrate. They're like men children.

lemmein · 08/07/2021 00:41

I'm not that into football really - I could sit in a room full of premiership footballers and not have a clue, however, I love the emotional side of football.

Seeing people sing their hearts out, the taking the knee, the pride in the anthems - watching the boys overwhelmed with the fans reaction at the end, the sweet Caroline chorus, it's coming home chants - just beautiful after the shitty year the whole world has experienced. But most of all I love that it's all been achieved with Gareth Southgate at the helm - thrilled to bits for them all 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

What’s Brexit got to do with it? There are 44 countries In Europe, not all are in the EU, it’s the European Football Championship, not the European Union Championship

wishawish91 · 08/07/2021 00:42

ITS COMING HOME!!!

Mothership4two · 08/07/2021 00:45

I'm not into football/the Euros either, but I understand that English fans might be a teeny bit excited that their team have got through and, after 55 years, may win a final.

I find the OP's comments about 'sheeple' etc very condescending and pretty absurd. Some of the millions of English fans probably do have boring lives (like all swathes of people) and many not. Lots of people use many things to bring "excitement" into their lives: watching other sports, playing sports, watching films/tv, sky-diving, amateur dramatics, gambling, Munsnet Smile, etc, etc....

What a sad comment, and if that’s truly what you think, it’s you that has the miserable life,

MOHquestion · 08/07/2021 00:46

don’t watch it then?

Dazzledrop · 08/07/2021 00:50

Sorry you can’t comprehend people watching something the enjoy - hope you don’t do any other “sheeple” type distractions like watch line of duty or enjoy nice meals as they’re all quite popular and predictable too!

LifeinPieces21 · 08/07/2021 00:50

The only other person I know say "Sheeple" has turned into a right prick because of covid.

Loved the football tonight.

SamW98 · 08/07/2021 00:51

The OP might think we're all 'sheeple' but I'd rather be one of those than a fun sponge or a mood hoover

We've had a shit year, lets enjoy some national pride in our boys - its been a long time coming

Frownette · 08/07/2021 00:51

@BumbleFlump you obviously look at it and think "I don't understand". Do you dislike widespread displays of emotional investment? Majority of us thoroughly enjoyed it. It'll all be over after Sunday, hope you get some rest.

Nsky · 08/07/2021 00:53

I don’t enjoy it, just let others enjoy

Snugglybuggly · 08/07/2021 00:57

Brexit??!!

It's coming home!!!!!GrinFootball

DoucheCanoe · 08/07/2021 01:00

I'm Scottish, with a full background Scottish family living in Scotland and i'm bloody happy and excited for Sunday's final!

Definitely in the minority here and have been a fan since I was a kid (I liked their strip 😂) - I really don't fit in with your "sheeple" theory I suppose.

Who gives a shit if people are getting a "temporary high" or a break from the daily grind? I'm sorry that you don't have an outlet for your pent up frustration but let others have theirs.

Mothership4two · 08/07/2021 01:00

@BumbleFlump is obviously a glass half empty kind of person. I don't think that most people’s lives are actually quite miserable at all, even in these difficult times. And, if you believe that, then why begrudge them that little bit of excitement?

the wider function of football in society is why it (and other sports) is important, even if you aren't a fan.

Brexit? Fans have been getting very excited about football tournaments for many many years before Brexit was even a twinkle in the eye.

DoucheCanoe · 08/07/2021 01:02

I also voted to remain in both indy ref and Brexit since you seem to be somehow lumping electoral choices in with a game.

jasminetea22 · 08/07/2021 01:03

You've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line
They'll always hit you and hurt you
Defend and attack
There's only one way to beat them
Get 'round the back
Catch me if you can
'Cause I'm the England man
And what you're looking at
Is the master plan
We ain't no hooligans
This ain't a football song
Three lions on my chest
I know we can't go wrong

Just seeing the fun and excitement my children who are all in their 20s have had has been bloody brilliant…just be happy that many of millions of people are having fun …it’s not that hard ! I am late 50s and had a friend over with lots of M and S nibbles watching the game and with a bit of fizz !!

slightlysnippy · 08/07/2021 01:06

'Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?'

What?? You do know we are still part of Europe.

I'm Scottish, don't like football, but can totally understand why people are getting excited, and after a shit year great to see people happy. (My husband's watched every came, just in case you think it doesn't affect me as we were knocked out Smile)

ALTHOUGH.....Much More importantly than boring football c'mon Mark Cavendish two more wins !!!

Furries · 08/07/2021 01:09

I’m not a huge football fan, but thoroughly enjoyed (if that’s the right word!) the match tonight.

Sterling was a firecracker, he’s so fast. Kane might have “fluffed” his penalty but had the presence to stay focussed and see it through. And I thought the Danish goalkeeper was great.

Am delighted we are through, but if we’d lost to anyone then I’d have been ok(ish) with it being Denmark. They did really well, especially after what happened at the start of the tournament.

As an aside, am hoping that records of who attended as fans were pretty robust - as that should hopefully make it slightly easier to pinpoint the total numbskull that was pointing a laser at the Danish goalkeeper just before the penalty.

Frownette · 08/07/2021 01:16

@Furries that was awful! Poor guy! What a thug whoever did that to him
