I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

OP posts:

I am not a football fan but it’s been great to see people happy and enjoying themselves regardless of what it is about.

CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:18

I don't like football either, but we just reached the FINALS in the Euros. We haven't fucking won anything in 55 years! Longer than many of us have been alive! It's a celebration. We've been told we're fucking useless for 55 years!

It's a couple of nights. Let people celebrate after a year of death and isolation.

CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:20

@Furries

I’m not a huge football fan, but thoroughly enjoyed (if that’s the right word!) the match tonight.

Sterling was a firecracker, he’s so fast. Kane might have “fluffed” his penalty but had the presence to stay focussed and see it through. And I thought the Danish goalkeeper was great.

Am delighted we are through, but if we’d lost to anyone then I’d have been ok(ish) with it being Denmark. They did really well, especially after what happened at the start of the tournament.

As an aside, am hoping that records of who attended as fans were pretty robust - as that should hopefully make it slightly easier to pinpoint the total numbskull that was pointing a laser at the Danish goalkeeper just before the penalty.

Someone did what??? My partner was there! Game of a lifetime for him. He'd have bloody tackled them if he saw that.
douliket · 08/07/2021 01:22

Yes OP,I agee to some extent. Football is football but the amount of money paid to footballers and the amount of money flowing through that industry is disgusting when you have nhs nurses, struggling financially to feed their family on their wage. Where is the sense in that.
Also,I'm not a big football fan but overheard a conversation today where people where talking about English fans being the worst fans with the worst reputations. Being loud, arrogant, violent, racist etc.I also heard that England have never,in fact won the euros so people around the works are making a mockery of the English fans singing "it's coming home" because it never was at your home in the first place.
I only remember seeing English fans on holiday in Spain many times band I have to say I wasnt impressed. They are always the ones with their English jerseys, lobster red from sunburn, drinking a beer with breakfast and generally being the loudest at breakfast. I just don't get it.

CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:24

And by the way my life isn't miserable. DP and I have kept our jobs during Covid ( in fact he's doubled his salary at a new firm and I've had an exciting new project) our family are all fine, we still have our home and friends. We have a very nice life.

The football still ignores passion and fire and community in us. 'Sheeple' pfft you clearly have a superiority complex because you can't grasp pure fun and joyousness.

CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:25

MarsandPluto · 08/07/2021 01:25

I agree. It drives me mad. Why can't it be more like cricket, where its all done quietly. The media and everyone goes on and on and on about it, it's crazy. Can't really understand this whole "it's coming home" slogan either. What makes England its "home " especially as it has never been "home". If an Italian says it, surely it will mean that its going to Italy! I'm sure the virus is very happy about these super spreader events.

Frownette · 08/07/2021 01:28

Apparently the italians are saying "it's coming Rome" right this minute :)

Urrrgh it's like having a double espresso before bed, I can't settle. I don't want yet another cup of tea though

CorianderBee · 08/07/2021 01:29

Also a note: it's the only time we're ever allowed to feel proud to be English other than the Olympics.

Just saying.

hayley037 · 08/07/2021 01:30

Imagine being asked by your grandchildren where you were during the Euros in 2021 and you tell them you didn't watch because football is 'a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable' and you see the big picture and that people are sheeple. Sad sad stuff, I feel sorry for you and your miserable outlook on life.

It's historic at the very least, reaching the finals of a major tournament is something that doesn't come around very often. Once or twice a century if we're lucky. I ask my parents/grandparents things like if they remember where they were when England won in '66 amongst other things, this is on the same level.

Money doesn't even come into it either, it's an international tournament, you can't buy players like the football leagues, it's based on nationality so literally the sport in its purest form.

It's coming home because we invented the modern game rules... not because we've won a lot 😂

We fucking invented it!
ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 08/07/2021 01:33

You mean the Commonwealth Games as Olympic is team GB!

Tonight is a feel good boast after all the pans hurt over the past two years. However Italy are unbeaten for a fair few games and were surprisingly outplayed by Spain but managed to win on penalties. We and penalties on the other hand….

StardewMelons · 08/07/2021 01:34

I'm English and find a lot of the fans quite embarrasing, and not proud to be english. Side note I bet 95% of people here don't give a toss about womens football 🤔... I don't care about any to be clear, but can't see why it causes such emotions in people, its a bunch of strangers playing a game.

slightlysnippy · 08/07/2021 01:35

Although for those of us fed up with the media going on about 'it coming home' this video is funny ( sorry couldn't work out how to link to the YouTube video direct)

Totally agree I’ve seen the destruction left by some English fans and how they are perceived in other European country’s as drunken thugs. If only they wouldn’t keep living up to the name and proving everyone right .
MarsandPluto · 08/07/2021 01:38

What? We invented kicking a ball around? Confused

OnTheSeaShore · 08/07/2021 01:39

I guess one reason to be happy is that domestic violence rates rise by 38% (I have read) when England lose at football. That aside, I am closer to OP's position than the consensus. I detest the noise of pissed up men howling outside.

MarsandPluto · 08/07/2021 01:40

Actually, if we did, saying its coming home is even more embarrassing than had initially thought Blush

That’s a positive I guess. At least no little girls were mocked on Twitter by English fans tonight too.
Furries · 08/07/2021 01:41

@CorianderBee - yup, they really did! The commentators showed it after the match, they weren’t impressed.

Bet your partner had an amazing time, what a great memory to have!

  1. Do you suggest we abandon our way of life and get rid of capitalism? Money only goes to the players because their unions have ensured that the money doesn't flow to a single individual (football club owners), if you have a problem with the money they are paid take it up with Sky Sports - the only reason players are paid so much is because people pay Sky subscriptions which amount to billions in revenue. If you have a problem with redistribution of wealth then try campaigning for higher wealth taxes, every single Premier League footballer is taxed via PAYE so pays their tax.
  1. Nice one on the stereotyping of 'English fans'. Do you also apply this mentality to every other stereotype?
  1. Football was invented in the UK, perhaps do some history research into why fans might sing 'its coming home'.
steff13 · 08/07/2021 01:42

I don't get why you all call it "the football." Is there only one league?

MissKeithsNeice · 08/07/2021 01:42

And just to check, do you have a problem with singers making loads of money? Hollywood stars? CEOs? What about investment bankers?

Or is it just young - often working class -men that you don't feel deserve to be one very wealthy off their talents and hard work?

You mean British I’m pretty sure England don’t enter the Olympics on their own .
