I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

I watched with my 85 year old dad and my 17 year old son. Loved every minute. Voted remain. Proud to be working class. And have a top class memory of a great evening

theThreeofWeevils · 08/07/2021 00:15

made history for the first time in over 50 years
errrr, what? It isn't important.

Hoping it all goes horribly wrong on Sunday, obviously: the more misery and foundered hopes the better. Suffer, ye bastards! Grin (I seldom get what I wish for, so thank me layer)

RamItBunty · 08/07/2021 00:17

Don’t do that fake thing, the ohh Gosh oh mighty…what is foot?ball? Why all this fuss. Like you genuinely don’t know. Never encountered it. Don’t follow social media or the press

theThreeofWeevils · 08/07/2021 00:17

layer? Later?

Lalliella · 08/07/2021 00:19

I love Gareth Southgate!

But some of the England supporters are such hideous gammons I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. Plus it’s a massive Covid risk.

Lisamonwesaa · 08/07/2021 00:20

I’m English and can’t stand football . I just hate the destruction that comes along with it. Wonder how many arrests were made tonight.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 00:20

Gareth Southgate seems like a Thoroughly Nice Chap. Who wants a Nice Team. And I always always always think the nice teams are better to watch than the divers and cheaters. GS seems like a carrot kind of guy!

alongwiththesunshine · 08/07/2021 00:22

I hate football/ no passion for it but I was picking up dh. And it filled me with joy to hear cheers from the houses etc and people playing songs.

So yeah YABVU

I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Why the contempt for ordinary people having fun? I’m not mad about sport either, but there’s nothing wrong with people who are.

Davros · 08/07/2021 00:25

Not only do I love football but I will be making you even happier by getting the fireworks out on Sunday, win or lose

Lisamonwesaa · 08/07/2021 00:28

Don’t they say when England lose domestic violence goes up a crazy amount. Can only imagine the horror that will follow if they don’t win on Sunday .

DrCoconut · 08/07/2021 00:29

I'm not remotely interested and find it a bit silly how everything is expected to fall in behind football. But if other people want to watch it it's their business.

FiveEasyCreases · 08/07/2021 00:31

A lot of women like soap operas and they never end, but are unmissable sources of pleasure to them. Football tournaments are fleeting every few years and can be shared with friends, they are the reason to get together. If you don't like it, try and understand other people a little bit and not be such a deliberate killjoy. I imagine you are someone who's best friend was/is her mother, and you spend a lot of time talking about the minutae of other people's lives.

Ohhelppp · 08/07/2021 00:31

DH and I stopped watching club football years ago because the diving in the premier league is a joke. We follow rugby because there is such a high level of respect and we much prefer that approach to sport.
However. This England team is showing a level of skill I haven’t seen in an English national team in my whole life. And they’re young and passionate and people like Marcus Rashford are true heroes. So I’m proudly supporting our young footballers. They’re bringing some much needed positivity and excitement after a shitty year.
And I’m a remainer btw. Although my football-mad family are not. Not sure what difference it makes?

SamW98 · 08/07/2021 00:32

I'm not a huge football fan but after the last 18 months where we've mostly had a shit time, and the fact its the first time in 55 years we've reached a final, its making people smile so why begrudge that

And the 'sad little life comment' doesn't make you superior, it makes you sound like a sanctimonious bore

You don't like it, no one cares. its a few weeks out of our lives where the country is coming together

bitheby · 08/07/2021 00:32

I feel sorry for people who can't share the passion of a collective experience that grips most of the nation. It must be very boring in your life.

I not only voted remain but delivered leaflets for the remain campaign. So hopefully that splinters a few of your stereotypes.

Frownette · 08/07/2021 00:32

@Lisamonwesaa yeah that's the downside. Hopefully there will be minimal outbursts tonight, I think it's a combination of adrenaline and alcohol.

I enjoyed it anyway, looking forward to Sunday!

Football is a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable....a temporary distraction from the massive rent, bills, mortgage etc that people have to pay. It’s like a drug. Temporary high. That’s why I used the term “sheeple” because people don’t get the wider function of football in society. The big picture

What is the big picture?
What is the wider function of football?

Also my life isn’t miserable. (4 adults all on UC having lost all income/work in the first lockdown) I should be in deep depression but I am very happy as we have a very small mortgage, and I am in my 50s and finally got diagnosed with ADHD yesterday.
I am f**king ecstatic

I don’t think people live miserable lives.
Are you the one who is miserable with a big mortgage or rent?

Bythemillpond · 08/07/2021 00:34

Also does calling people “sheeple” make you feel better about yourself

GrandDuchessRomanov · 08/07/2021 00:35

I'm sure there are lots of things that interest you personally OP that many people couldn't give a toss about.

And who are you to say whose life is boring? If I met/knew you I might think exactly the same about you.

Surely you are not that devoid of imagination to understand that different people have different interests?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 08/07/2021 00:36

Football is a distraction eh? Well so is music, art, gardening, religion, tv, love island etc. Who decides which distractions are acceptable, you?

It’s Coming Home! ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

AlwaysLatte · 08/07/2021 00:36

I don't follow football usually but I was hugely interested in this. It's a big and much awaited event! I was tooting my horn myself when I heard we'd scored earlier as I was driving home. You don't have to watch it but YABU for not understanding others' excitement.

Oh the irony of your post OP! There's only one miserable person around here and it's you! SWEET CAROLINE..OH OH OH
