I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

@MrsFin

I'm with you OP. I can't watch a sport that pays 17 and 18 year olds tens of millions of pounds a year to kick a ball around. And charges £££ for shoddy relics kit.
Say what Hmm

If you have a moment, please do expand.

These young men have reached the height of their profession in the world's most competitive sports.

And they don't deserve their financial reward? Cause of what? Cause they're young? Is it a class thing? Maybe you feel they're too big for their boots?

@BumbleFlump

Football is a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable....a temporary distraction from the massive rent, bills, mortgage etc that people have to pay. It’s like a drug. Temporary high. That’s why I used the term “sheeple” because people don’t get the wider function of football in society. The big picture.
A temporary distraction is better than being a miserable git all the time though.

You really are quite the bore, aren't you 😴

Unsure33 · 08/07/2021 00:04

We are still European 😂

It’s a glimmer of hope and patriotism.

Enjoy.

ilovesooty · 08/07/2021 00:05

@BeHappyAndSmile

Your use of sheeple to describe people who happen to like something different to you invalidates any argument you may have.
Absolutely. It's only used by people who are really incapable of intelligent debate or conversation.

@DialSquare

Well said

I think it's fanbloodytastic, my pub is alive again after the hell of the last 16months praying we could keep from gong under. This is just what we needed. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿. England fans are a very welcome sight. (And any other fans, we're a friendly bunch)

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 00:06

'Sheeple' is up there with 'snowflake' for words that are now just embarrassing to use

Deux · 08/07/2021 00:06

People have always sought out distraction as you put it in times of misery. So not sure what that point is all about. I’m not a big football fan and I’m even Scottish and I found it gripping. I’m thrilled that England are through and I’m looking forward to the final.

Maybe kneel on some stones, or a hair shirt?

ViciousJackdaw · 08/07/2021 00:06

OP is really an aggrieved Patrick Bamford...

Thanks. Would have been better without the typos though!

Gingernaut · 08/07/2021 00:07

YANBU, OP.

However, win or lose, we'll never hear the end of it.

coulditbecominghome · 08/07/2021 00:07

I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

And I suppose you're "living your best life" starting a MNs thread late at night?

That's not what sheeple means at all.
DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 08/07/2021 00:07

Sheeple. Oh dear.

strawberrydonuts · 08/07/2021 00:08

I'm not massively into football and don't watch the games but I am glad to see England doing well and that it is making people happy.

You have a very condescending attitude to people who are just enjoying themselves, especially after what has been a really awful year for so many.

I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives

This is a very unpleasant thing to say - is your life really that interesting if you have nothing better to do than start threads on mumsnet complaining about people enjoying themselves? Live and let live. If you're not into it, leave them to it and do something else, it will be over very soon anyway.

DismantledKing · 08/07/2021 00:08

Well, as you know that you’re going to be flamed, I’ll
add this.
You’re a fucking misery guts.

DismantledKing · 08/07/2021 00:09

And anyone who uses the word ‘sheeple’ is a fucking idiot.

Thedogscollar · 08/07/2021 00:09

It was a bloody brilliant match. It's been a shit 16 months let some people enjoy this.

Each to their own eh.

Haha there you go generalising again- so essentially what you’re saying is that the only people who like football are poor people who struggle to pay their bills. Erm, sorry to piss on your chips but ‘rich’ people also enjoy football..didn’t you see David Beckham and Prince William in the crowd tonight?

If you don’t like football then that’s fine, but stop being ignorant by making offensive comments about people who do. It’s the biggest sport in the world so have you thought that maybe the issue lies with you?

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2021 00:09

This is what springs to mind. Grumpy Squidward. Grin

I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football
DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 08/07/2021 00:10

He definitely voted Brexit for the wrong reasons though
Oh, so what is your list of the ‘right’ reasons? I’m genuinely interested.

AmIPeriOrAreYouJustAnnoying · 08/07/2021 00:10

IT'S COMING HOME!!!! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿⚽️🦁🦁🦁🙌🙌🙌

CatNameChange101 · 08/07/2021 00:11

I’m in Scotland and still cheering for you guys. IT’S COMING HOME for England!

YABU.

strawberrydonuts · 08/07/2021 00:11

@BumbleFlump

Yeah the Brexit thing was a bit irrelevant...my football obsessed neighbour is also a devout brexiteer (amongst other things) and given what I’ve heard him say about some of our fellow Europeans, I’m surprised he’d even consider breathing the same air as anyone from Europe let alone be pleased England is competing in the Euros. He definitely voted Brexit for the wrong reasons though. As I said, an sideline.
Yes it is irrelevant because EU doesn't = Europe.

The UK would be in Europe whether or not it was part of the EU.
