I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

Football is a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable....a temporary distraction from the massive rent, bills, mortgage etc that people have to pay. It’s like a drug. Temporary high. That’s why I used the term “sheeple” because people don’t get the wider function of football in society. The big picture.

Probably because we've just made history for the first time in over 50 years. Lighten up a little bit for once the country has something to be excited about.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 07/07/2021 23:56

You don't HAVE to get the fuss about anything. I don't get the fuss about dogs, or cars, or the NHS clap, but I can live with other people having a preference towards all those.

There's a distinct snobbery around football because it's seen as working class, I think. But it means a lot to so many people and this may be the only time many of us will see England reach a final. The celebrations will last tonight, then on Sunday. That's it

BoysTownGang · 07/07/2021 23:56

Bloody Hell!!!
You’re a barrel of laughs!!!🙄
After the misery this country has just been through, it surely doesn’t matter what draws us together, makes us have a sing-song with strangers and generally have a big smile.
Don’t care what occasion it is, at least we’re finally joyful for once!!
It’s coming home!!🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

dancemusicsexromance · 07/07/2021 23:56

Wow - how sad you feel this way.
Loved the game, I'm
Not a football fan, I have to be up in 2 Hours for work and there's noise going on here - I don't mind.
People are hopeful and happy. That's a good thing.

LucilleBluth · 07/07/2021 23:56

The Euros are nothing to do with Brexit 🤣🤣 you know we are still in the continent or Europe right?

youshallnotpass9 · 07/07/2021 23:56

I fucking hate the football, people don't. I bloody love Eurovision plenty of people who can't stand that either.

Its nice that people are enjoying something and actually can enjoy it with family and friends

Dogmum40 · 07/07/2021 23:56

I don’t know one footballer, I last followed football when Beckham still played and even then I wasn’t a fan and prob got forced to watch a World Cup or something and like you I don’t understand the hype and getting drunk but as I’m English I’m pleased we got through as apparently according to my husband who’s now suddenly turned into a football commentator even though he like me doesn’t really like the sport said we haven’t been in a final for a decade even though it’s supposed to be our national sport so good luck to our national team Italy are apparently hard as nails (again according to hubby) Confused

ScottishNewbie · 07/07/2021 23:56

Haha I hate it also. It gives me an unreasonable amount of ICK!
I know IABU but it turns some men silly and it takes over the house.

I'm such a grinch Grin

dancinfeet · 07/07/2021 23:57

I hate football and I don't particularly care that we won. I also appreciate that many other people do like it so not complaining about that, but have zero interest in watching the final myself.

Dogmum40 · 07/07/2021 23:57

Sorry that should have read we haven’t been in a final for decades not decade 🙄

BackforGood · 07/07/2021 23:57

At least you've conceded it has nothing to do with Brexit.

I'm never sure why people post to try and make themselves sound somehow superior. It always just makes them look a bit sad, and totally lacking the ability to understand that people can like different things - again something of a negative quality in a person, being so narrow minded.

I do love football as it happens, but I also can become patriotic and moved at a great achievement in sports I don't follow - England winning the Rugby World Cup, or doing so well in the hockey or the rowing at the Olympics, etc etc.
It raises the spirit of the nation and mood of 95% of the country.

JordanPickford · 07/07/2021 23:58

Hmm, let me see….yep!
Blimey, wereyou the one who created a similar thread after England v Scotland?

Nah not buying it.

You used it as a massive insult on people's intelligence and are only backtracking because this thread didn't go your way.

acatcalledjohn · 07/07/2021 23:59

@Smileyaxolotl1

Please explain the relation to BREXIT? We are still in the continent of Europe. Switzerland and Ukraine aren’t in the EU either…

Not to mention Turkey and Russia.

Heaven forbid people are distracted from the misery.

Maybe it’s better for them to never have any happiness from anything and stay sad.

Sparklingbrook · 07/07/2021 23:59

'Sheeple' is such a non word, it just makes me Hmm that people still use it and think they are being incredibly original.

Maggiesfarm · 07/07/2021 23:59

I'm no football fan and haven't watched any. What I do like is England (or it might be the UK, can't remember), versus The World; I find that match very exciting and amusing but we haven't had it for a while because of the pandemic. 'Ordinary' football I wouldn't cross the road for.

MrsDonnelly · 08/07/2021 00:00

Wow, aren’t you the life and soul?! A brilliant performance, the first final in 55 years and some joy after a pretty miserable 18 months. Let people enjoy it. And I didn’t vote for Brexit, nor do I have a dull life

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/07/2021 00:02

Yes @BumbleFlump, it's called JOY. People are aware of its temporary nature and the fact that it doesn't solve all problems.Hmm

KS34 · 08/07/2021 00:02

My life's pretty comfortable and happy. But I really enjoyed that. 4th semi final in a major competition in my lifetime, and finally England won one. Not too bothered about Sunday's result, just delighted to actually make it to a final!

thefamous5 · 08/07/2021 00:02

I love football. Massive, massive fan
of domestic and international games.

I'm a 30 something married mother of four, with two first class university degrees, speak two languages, a passion for language and history, a successful business under my belt & voted for remain.

My life is far from boring. I am far from uneducated or sheepish but I adore football.

You sound like a boring snob.

It's coming home.

DialSquare · 08/07/2021 00:04

I've been going to football since I was 18 months old. Football isn't a distraction from life for me. It's a massive part of my life and the sane for many many others like me. You don't have to like it though. I won't look down in you for it and call you names.
