I just don’t get all the fuss about stupid football

So I’m sitting in bed about go to sleep and all I can hear outside is cheering, horns beeping people shouting etc because England are through to the final. It means nothing to me. Just a massive money spinning industry.

Am I honestly the only person who doesn’t give a flying fig about it all? I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

Sure I will be totally flamed for this, but I honestly wish it would just all go away.

Also, as a side note, it’s the Euros but wonder how many England supporters actually voted for Brexit 🤔 Or is that actually why people are so invested in it?

OP posts:
Cloudninenine · 08/07/2021 09:06

Fucking hell, people aren’t sheeple because the like something you don’t like Hmm

It’s not my thing either, but I think if you can’t see why it’s making some people happy and excited you must seriously lack any kind of empathy or imagination.

I’m not really interested in it, but tbh beating the Germans and getting to the final is pretty amazing.
One request please to all the males out there; please keep your tops on 🤮

Mousetown · 08/07/2021 09:10

I have the mother of all AF and was feeling miserable last night so was probably a bit over the top about it

AF?
Do you mean your period? You had your period. You can say period.

QueSeraSarah · 08/07/2021 09:13

I can't get excited about it either. Fun sponge that I am Confused Rugby on the other hand... GrinGrinGrin

Sparklingbrook · 08/07/2021 09:14

I really can’t get excited about Rugby/Cricket/Tennis. Too much stop/start. 🥱

Drovememad · 08/07/2021 09:18

how very dare people enjoy themselves, my life isn't boring, but you sound utterly miserable!

I am glad I am not you!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 08/07/2021 09:19

I actually feel sorry for the sheeple who are using it to bring excitement to their otherwise quite boring lives.

I feel sorry for anyone who is so socially unaware that they cannot understand the excitement of making an international final for the first time since 1966.
Any empathy I might have had for you was lost with your nasty comment above .

user1471523870 · 08/07/2021 09:21

I don't normally watch football and I dislike some aspects of the sport (the 'money spinning industry' you mention). However, euro and world cup are another matter:).
It's just so much fun to cheer for your country and to do so with your friends, your neighbors, family, colleagues...
The football players themselves show pride in representing their nation and they are genuinely friendly with the competitors. You often see them hugging and exchanging friendly comments to the other team mid way through the match.
It's just nice, no need to overthink it or making the hate for football a matter of principle.

Yes I agree, don't like football fine. Calling it stupid makes you sound about 5, calling people sheeple because they like football, therefore saying they haven't got their own minds, saying people are distracted by football and are normally miserable because they have rent etc to pay, all ridiculous and unnecessary comments.

If you are this miserable every month I feel sorry for anyone in close contact to you! I expect they need a distraction!

lifehappened · 08/07/2021 09:30

Haha I feel sorry for you. Hate people having fun so much you bothered to write a post about it. How pathetic

Sheeple. FFS. Hmm

Originaltiles · 08/07/2021 09:43

Football is a distraction because most people’s lives are actually quite miserable....a temporary distraction from the massive rent, bills, mortgage etc that people have to pay. It’s like a drug. Temporary high. That’s why I used the term “sheeple” because people don’t get the wider function of football in society. The big picture.

Utter bollocks

Creamsoda77 · 08/07/2021 09:45

Hate football with a passion, just watch the cases rise after all those fans huddled together in Wembley.....

hazandduck · 08/07/2021 09:46

Curtain twitching then posting on MN from bed about how boring other people’s lives are. Signs of a full and exciting life right there Grin

Too many people are intolerant and hyper sensitive these days and proactively looking to be offended when none intended. Perhaps it’s snowflakery or indeed that classic old chestnut but new variant of English exceptionalism entitlement. In these otherwise challenging times happiness particularly communal is a rare commodity as there is little other joy to spread. Think of it not as nationalism, football or sport but just a bunch of public strangers and neighbours being united in a moment of happiness and joy! Joy and smiles can be infectious and has never caused more harm than good as it is the original self heading natural remedy for life’s challenges. Get ready for euphoria (rather than sadness) should it becomes a reality this weekend. Bring it on…chill and find your enjoyment in other interests. Be positive!

@BumbleFlump

I have the mother of all AF and was feeling miserable last night so was probably a bit over the top about it. To be fair though, I grew up by what are now two very big football clubs and had to endure endless anti-social behaviour as a child....men pissing in front gardens, groups of them chasing each other with metal bars. Once we went out to buy milk once and were sent home by the police. So I suppose my formative experiences of it all weren’t great and I see it in a different light.

I equate it with violence and not being safe.

Sheeple = people who behave like sheep. I don’t see what’s wrong with that if it conveys what I mean.

You may not see what's wrong with the word Sheeple but that is the definition of why you are being offensive. Is it ok to call someone a pig because you think they eat too much (and if you just thought yes then you are a truly offensive person).

It's a derogatory sneering phrase without any basis in fact. The fact that you think it acceptable is genuinely mind boggling.

It defines your entire post that you consider it acceptable to sneer at things because of your own internal issues.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 09:48

This always happens in major tournaments. People whining "I JUsT dOnt UNderStAnd"

You don't have to!

I don't understand the appeal of two people batting a tennis ball back and forth for about sixteen hours, I find it immensely boring, but Wimbledon is huge, brings joy, boosts our economy and churns out excellent sportspeople. I don't understand the enjoyment but I do accept that others enjoy it immensely.

Same should go for football surely? Or is it ok to trash a working class game? Is that the rulez?

SprayedWithDettol · 08/07/2021 09:50

OP you are conflating football and Brexit which only weakens your argument. You are also being churlish about people celebrating.

I personally don’t care a jot about football and didn’t watch the game - though my husband did, so some must have permeated via osmosis as we are on holiday in a small cottage.
Football (and actually doing well for once) gives a lot of people a lot of pleasure and that surely is a good thing?

BethN1986 · 08/07/2021 09:52

'Sheeple' was one of my favourite words when I was an 'edgy' fourteen year old who hated everything mainstream.

I cringe at fully grown adults using it. People liking popular things that you don't like doesn't make them incapable of thinking for themselves. It's incredibly patronising to suggest that you see the wider function of football in society etc etc and they don't. They just like something that you don't. That's fine. It doesn't make you any better than them.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 08/07/2021 09:52

Prince William seems to genuinely enjoy football, I suppose it's a change from his sad and lonely life worrying about paying his rent and feeding his family.

Lol indeed, the poor deluded skint sheep that he is
Creamsoda77 · 08/07/2021 09:55

He probably has to be there and doesn't care less

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 08/07/2021 09:56

He's the president of the FA.

It's not a Royal visit, of course he doesn't have to be there.

Good people REALLY hate others enjoying football don't they. So weird.
